Just got a PS3
Friday, March 21st, 2008 - 3:12pm
So I got a PS3....why? I don't know, got a bonus from work today and said...."Why the hell not?" I picked up Resistance for starters and will most likely begin a regiment of PS3 rentals soon. GOD HELP ME WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

Well, if all else fails, you at least have a blue-ray player at this point. I've been tempted many times to by the PS3 just for that reason.

Get the demos for Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, and MLB The Show, STAT!
(And if you like tower defense games, the demo for Pixeljunk Monsters!)
Yeah the PS3 is an excellent blu-ray player. And every couple of months you can play a game on it too.
MLB '08 The Show is fantastic, best game I've played on my PS3.

I would say, skip the demo on Uncharted and just rent it.

many people in the industry are predicting that 2008 is the year of the PS3. HD format war winner, some big exclusives coming, sales are big in Europe and the PS3 has even outsold the 360 in the US for the last two months (people can spin that any way they want, but my point is simply that the bigger the install base, the more games we're going to see on the system). Even now, you have a year and a half worth of games to play... and YES, some exclusives are worth playing.
I guess this is a lengthy way of saying "you don't have any reason to feel embarassed about buying one."

I'm not sure I understand getting a PS3 if you don't have and HDTV already. If you were gettingit anyway, then kudos. But a HUGE part of the PS3's worth is the BluRay player, si it would seem odd to spend that much on a system if you were playing it in SD.
There are lots of opinions about BluRay, but it seems like folks with HDTVs smaller than 40" really won't see a huge difference over their upscaling DVD players. I know that my upscaling DVD player looks great on my 36". I've considered a PS3 for a BluRay player, but the more I look qat it, the less it seems worth it. I'd love to pick up a few of the games, like Uncharted, but I'm not struggling to find games to play on my 360.

PS3 firmware 2.20 is also going to give you a lot of new features that take advantage of the newest Blu-Ray spec:

I would say, skip the rental on Uncharted and just buy it.
That, personally, I would not recommend.

As fun as it is/was to have a running joke about Sony's shenanigans and their PS3 blunders, embracing quality and shunning crap can only be good for the industry and gamers, so if it's turning into quality in your eyes, and the eyes of more and more folks, then rock on.

Before you rent something see if there is a demo for it first, if there is play the demo, if you like it, rent the game, if you then think it is worth buying then do it.
I support the second amendment
I'd strongly recommend Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and recommend Ninja Gaiden: Sigma if you haven't played Black on the Xbox/PS2.

Go with Nei's and Vrikk's advice. Uncharted is a great rental. Ratchet and Clank and Motostorm are also worth renting.
And I know I'm in the minority on this one but I'd stay away from Heavenly Sword.
I just bought a PS3 a couple of weeks ago. I got the Costco bundle which came with Ratchet & Clank. I was ambivalent about the game but after actually playing it I say it is great, worth at least a rental.
Besides that I have the Simpsons game, Rockband and the Lego Star Wars collection.
The blu-ray picture on 1080p is excellent.
I also have an external hard drive hooked up and have ripped ten or so movies to it so far. I have been pretty satisfied overall on the PS3, unlike the 360 when I had one. The only disappointment so far is the browser does not support Flash 9.
I strongly second the Heavenly Sword comment. The biggest disappointment on the PS3 thus far for me. Too short, too much off a repetitive button masher, and relies too much on the sixaxis functionality, which makes the game incredibly aggravating at times.

I'm a newcomer to the PS3 too. A member of my family got one free with a new Sony TV and didn't want it, so I snagged it on the cheap. I'd recommend two downloads from the PS Store:
1. Warhawk. This is a good online shooter. I think I've had more fun playing this online than Halo. There are virtually no level restrictions on many servers, so if, like me, you don't have 12hrs a day to play, you might get your pants handed to you fairly often. But it can be enormous fun.
2. Kula world (originally a PS1 title). AWESOME puzzle game. This game is/was so underrated. If you can see past the PS1 era graphics, you'll have a blast.

Yeah, I'm a recent PS3 purchaser, too. I wanted to get a 60gb before they got too difficult to find, so when I got the opportunity, I grabbed it. I'm interested in some upcoming games, too, so... my random thoughts follow below .
So far, I've checked out the demos for Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Super Stardust, Resistance, GT HD Concept and rented Ratchet & Clank Future.
Uncharted was fun, but this will likely be a rental for me. I thought Heavenly Sword was very mediocre. Super Stardust was fun. Very big Geometry Wars vibe with it. I'm undecided on Resistance so far.
PSN being free is cool and all, but it feels so barren and lifeless compared to Live when I fire up the 360. I suppose that Home will alleviate this when it comes around, but does it get any better in it's current state?
The PSN Store is terrible. It looks like it was designed to be used on a computer rather than a console and some of the navigation concepts are maddening. I hear a redesign is in the works, but it's frankly shocking that Sony rolled it out in this state.
I went ahead and purchased Warhawk and am largely enjoying it. I've been on a team based multiplayer kick lately (Warhawk, Frontlines, TF2).
Is there a GWJ Warhawk clan? Also, how do I join the GWJ Folding at Home team (or whatever it's called)?
Plan to be spontaneous... tomorrow

"Hi, my name is [X] and I'm a PS3 owner"
I've been pretty critical of Sony, of their strategy with the PS3, and some of their really lousy business decisions. At no point though did they make a lousy console. My ambition is always to own each console of each generation because I really do want to play certain games. The PS3 is just at the end of my list right now, but I'd still like to get one someday.
Besides which, it's still the best value for a Blu-Ray player on the market. Something actually worthwhile now that the format war is over.
So be proud! Be strong! Enjoy your PS3 and play a little Resistance for me!

I picked up a PS3 a while back too, but short of Uncharted haven't had anything grab my attention. I've had Motorstorm and Ratchet & Clank so far from Gamefly but didn't really enjoy either one, and I hate Warhawk so much the english language can't accurately describe it.
At this point, for me anyway, it's basically an oversized blu-ray player with an oddly shaped remote.
There's a few games I'm looking forward to, MGS4 being one of them, but with that one exception most are pretty far away really.

Unless you do the smart thing and turn that crap off the first time you encounter it.
I had a great time with Heavenly Sword, but I turned off the SIXAXIS nonsense as soon as I saw it. Controlling the aftertouch with the sticks was much, much less aggravating.

If I'm going to be an ass, I might as well be a hot female sportscaster's ass.
In that case, I raise my hand and note that I've been a 'user' since earlier this month.
But in all actuality, I basically call my PS3 the 'Ratchet' box for now... I've been a huge fan of Ratchet & Clank since the PS2, and since the PS3 has replaced the upscaling DVD player I had before (which I gave to my parents), acts as my High-Def box and is a decent media streaming device, I'm quite happy with it. Granted, I still prefer my 360 to act as my media extender, but for some reason, the PS3 seems to generate a better image from the content stored on my PC. I thought at first that maybe it was just some type of 'new-toy goggles' clouding my judgment, but when my wife commented that some of our videos look better when streamed on the PS3 compared to the 360, I realized that their might be some truth to what I initially noticed.
Anyway, 'Ratchet & Clank Future' is great fun if you're a fan of the series, and I got 'Uncharted' for $20, so I'm not complaining in the least. I lucked out on a really good deal for the PS3 at a local EB Games ($299 for a 40gb? Yes please!) and since Blu-Ray 'won' the high-def format, I decided to take the plunge and have no regrets... Well, maybe I regret buying 'Pain' on the PSN store, but my wife is addicted to that now for some odd reason, so it all evens out I suppose.

Yep. Another freshly minted PS3 owner here.
Honestly, I don't even look at it as a game machine. At least not yet. The Blu-Ray playback is superb and the built -n browser makes internet surfing and YouTube watching much more convenient than my old PC-through VGA cable solution.
I also use it for serving up my copious music collection through my living room surround sound system.
All in all, a great system. Hopefully, some must have games (that I can't already buy for my 360) will surface soon.
I didn't even fight the law.
Wow. There must be something in the air. I just recently plunged for a PS3 as well. I just figured it was an eventuality, and now that Blu-ray is the winner it seemed to make sense. For some reason I went out of my way to get a refurbished 60GB. Seeing as how I rarely play last gen games once I have a new machine, I already have a PS2, and guitar controller compatibility issues means I won't be playing Guitar Hero II - the most commonly played PS2 game in the house - on the PS3 anyways, it now seems like a dumb move on my part.
Anyways, whatever issues I have with lack of software I like and horrible interface choices (the PSN store is horrible), it is a nicely built machine. Aside from being a great Blu-ray player, it's also a superb DVD-upscaler. Also, it's scarily silent for how much power it's pushing. My years of PC gaming have made me numb to the jumbo jet sound my 360 makes when it's starting up a game, but the PS3 makes even less noise than the Wii.

I bought a PS3 yesterday. I most definitely got it -- for the time being, at least -- as a blu-ray player and a DVD updscaler. I've had my 46" XBR4 for a month and a half now and I couldn't go on any longer without being able to watch movies on it. The PS3 came packaged with Spiderman 3 and I watched about 15 minutes of it last night. It was beautiful. Now I feel like I'm really going to get my money's worth out of the tv. Only thing left is to add a home theatre system.
I still plan on doing the majority of my gaming on the 360, as I'm immersed in Lost Odyssey and have several other games I want to play. Plus, I prefer the 360's dashboard over the PS3's home menu. But I'm working on downloading some PS3 demos (Resistance, Uncharted, Warhawk, etc.) because I do want to use it if there's stuff worth playing.
The PS3 controller feels like a feather compared to that of the 360. It's nice to be able to charge it using the USB chord. And I gotta appreciate the console's built-in wireless.

Ya know I'm having a blast with the PSP/PS3 connectivity options. Remote play and what not. Hell getting Wild Arms on my PsP was worth it.

Holy Crap! How bad is the PS3 interface? I love all the 360 functionality and whatnot, but the interface is atrocious (to put it in language that remains work friendly).
