I thought that was pretty much the general consensus. Isn't it? I mean, really, just look at the volleyball scene.

Hmm, I've not seen Commando since I was a kid, when all that would've flown over my head. Now I wanna see it again so I can laugh at it all...

Thank you for those links Bonus_Eruptus. I have never heard of that site before but now I am going through their "80's Action Guide" and it is hysterical.

Making up subtexts for films has been one of my favorite pastimes for most of my life. I just recently watched the awful "The Descent" with a buddy of mine and the man-hating lesbian subtext was just too easy to spot .

Though I agree it may not have been the director's intention to make Top Gun a movie about a young man's struggle with homosexuality, it certainly opened itself up to that sort of interpretation. Sure, sometimes a cigar is just a good smoke, but seriously, if it neatly wedged on top of two kiwifruits, people are going to talk.

There is only an up or down--up to a man's age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order--or down to the ant heap totalitarianism,... those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

Well, when the women you are trapped with underground turn out to be more dangerous than the flesh-eating monsters it turns comical. Stopping to have a "You slept with my boyfriend, bitch!" catfight when being pursued by C.H.U.D.'s is a hallmark of poor priorities management.

And to stay on topic, I noticed that the "Playing with the boys" song has been used on the Adam Carolla radio show for the last couple years as the standard "this person is gay" or "this situation is homoerotic" background music. Good times.

It's well documented that the 1980s is where heterosexuality almost died.

No news here, Quentin!

Let's face it, heterosexuality in the 80s was dorky!

But god bless them, these fine nerds kept heterosexuality on life support until we all came to our senses.

Their dogged lust for girly bits reminded us all of what we really desired.

I love The Descent. The sassy and adventurous tomboy/lesbotron who you know is going to be the cause of everything that goes wrong due to her reckless ignoring of the proper rules of going into dark holes, the complete inability for me to remember any of the other boring-ass characters or even how many there were to begin with, and the second half of the movie being shot with the lens cap on the camera and the actresses just screaming into the microphones. How it did not win an Oscar is beyond me. The say it's much scarier when they never show you the monster and let your imagination fill in the gaps, so obviously it must be really, really scary if they never show you the entire movie so you can completely imagine a better movie!

The Descent was the same derivative, tiresome crap as most other horror films. Still waiting for a movie based on Descent the videogame, though.

At one point, IGN DVD posted a review of the special edition Top Gun DVD. It had to be the funniest review I had ever read, which basically went on and on about the homosexual slant to the movie. Even the screenshots had hilarious captions.

Two days later, I return to the web site to read it again and discover someone had seriously altered it. Gone was the comedy and in place was a very generic, positive review of the movie. The same screenshots were used, but the captions were swapped out for basic descriptions. I'm assuming one of the editors were mighty pissed over the review. I've emailed their mailbag a number of times asking about it, but received no response.

I will also note that during 2001, a small group of us (all guys) spent all summer hanging out, making a lot of Top Gun references and playing "Playing with the Boys" in the car as we drove around. I will state of the record that we were doing it to be ironic.
