Seriously hot... I can't wait to get my hands on this. This is honestly one of the reasons I bought my PS3. I love the Wipeout series and the thought (and now sight) of next-gen Wipeout has me so freakin' excited. Should be out in the next couple of months, too!

Sweet, I might finally power up my PS3.
Has there been any talk on the price?

I love Wipeout so it's going to be a no brainer.

Pure awesome. After a generation of no/crap Wipeout, it's nice to see the series back on a console in top form (from the looks of it, at least). I love how Sony is putting games like this out on PSN. I'm playing Wipeout Pulse and still playing the extra downloadable content of Wipeout Pure. Best non-realistic racing series!

I was getting excited about this, but you know, I'm so fed up with Playstation's updating that I'm reluctant to turn it on. The last time I sat down to play GT5 Prologue, I'm not kidding, I sat through an hour of updating and installing. Seriously, every time I turn the blasted thing on, it wants to update, and it's never quick and painless like with the 360. This sort of baffles me.
Regardless, probably going through the motions again for the sake of Wipeout HD. Is it available already?

Those videos are just beautiful. The level of detail is amazing. I love the little touches like the air traffic high above the track, the pulsing wing-tip lights on the craft and the strobe lights that crawl over your ship when shields are activated. Of course it goes without saying that the blistering sense of 60 fps speed is amazing...even more so with all the added geometry and effects this next-gen version is bringing to the table.
This is the first game footage that really makes me bummed that I don't own a PS3. It's funny how people say that MGS4, Gran Turismo HD/5 and FFXIII are the first true system sellers for the console 'cause I personally couldn't give a toss about any of them (though Little Big Planet always did look sweet). Wipeout HD is the first game that could really push me over the edge, though for the life of me I can't figure out how to get one into the house w/o my wife flipping out.
Wipeout Pulse PSP is my current gaming passion and I really hope they can bring some of the new elements over to the PS3 version. The honeycombed grid system in the single player campaign is utterly brilliant in design and has gone a long way toward making Pulse my favorite Wipeout game since XL. Incorporating all race types into the campaign has finally made "extra" modes like Speed Lap and Time Trials mean something instead of being mildly interesting diversions that are ultimately a throwaway because they aren't incorporated into a campaign in any meaningful way. Take note racer developers.
My only apprehension is that Wipeout HD is being delivered on the PSN network and not a retail disc. It's already been said that there's only eight tracks and I'm left wondering how many other corners will be cut in order to keep the game download-friendly. What I'm really waiting to see is if there's any announcements for a retail version of the game complete with new tracks (or at least more than eight) and a full feature set. That's what would really make me buy a new PS3.
I remember the first time I saw Wipeout on my cousin's PS1. It looked amazing and used a rarely-employed high resolution, I believe.
With the grainy Youtube videos successfully masking higher polygon counts, it seems I'm looking at the same game 12 years later.
It's out and it is awesome. I only got to play a little bit last night but it looks like everything I've wanted from a next-gen Wipeout. The game is fast and silky smooth, online play seemed to work just fine and it's nicely integrated with leaderboards and trophies. 1080p and 60fps goes a long ways towards adding to the roller coaster feeling that Wipeout has always delivered so well. I also really like the addition of being able to absorb weapons to replenish your shields... it's a nice touch and gives you some decisions to make while racing.
Yeah, I love Super Stardust HD and the PixelJunk series, but this may be the best PSN game yet.

How do custom soundtracks work in this game? Do I have to rip stuff to the system or can I just stream music from my PC?
That's a feature I feel like I just have to make use of if I'm going to play this game for any length of time.

I didn't check it out here but if it's like every other PS3, the music needs to be on your PS3. You can easily rip stuff straight from your PC to your PS3 if you have your PC streaming the music already. Just find the list/folder/disc/song or whatever, press triangle and you should be able to copy it straight over.

I never bothered to mess with any of the streaming stuff because I so rarely turn on my PS3 for anything but blu-ray movies.
I don't even know where to start. Is there some official Sony tool that would work? Right now the PS3 doesn't see any media servers, despite having WMP11 running with sharing enabled, which works great with the 360.

You
WMP11 should work just fine. Odds are you need to go into WMP11 and allow your PS3 to connect. Go to Tools->Options->Library->Configure Sharing. Your PS3 will be listed as "Unknown Device". Allow it and your PC should show up on the PS3.

I'm in there now, trying to follow the directions from an online article. The PS3 never shows up. I click the checkbox for "share my media", hit OK, and then it thinks for a minute, and that window just stays there. No devices ever show up. The PS3 is most definitely on, as I have it sitting there in PIP.
Maybe I'll just use TVersity.

Hmmm, odd. You could also, on that sharing screen, go into settings and check "allow new devices automatically." You might also need to first go to the PS3 and scan for a media player to have it try and hit your PC before it shows up... not sure.
Or you could just use something else
It should work, though. I stream using WMP11 to my PS3 without any problem.

It's out. How is it?
I saw on the blogs that some people were having crashes/other bugs. Anyone experiencing that?
Don't google "crouton days"
No crashes yet, just sweet sweet racing.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
GT5 Prologue is particularly bad, but then even the menu system is terrible in that game. Sony has at least added a "turn the console off when finished updating" option now, so you can leave it updating at night or something.
I agree that the whole update/game download/game install system on the PS3 is terribly designed, though. It's obviously designed for maximum developer convenience, with no thought at all about user experience.

I really, really love this incarnation of my favorite racing series ever. I'm an unabashed fanboy of the whole Wipeout canon, so I admit I have no objectivity. It all feels like Wipeout, which is by far the most important part. The visuals are entirely pointlessly over the top, which is awesome. The sound is great. Split screen multiplayer is great. The only thing I haven't tested is online, but I suck so bad it's a bit intimidating (I can plow through the game on novice, but there's a reason I play novice.
I really like the boost effect, but I could see how some people might not.
In car camera (which is how my wife plays) seems lower to the ground than in previous incarnations, making it even MORE nauseating for me to watch - luckily, I've never played the game from that viewpoint.
No bugs for me.

I've been having tons of fun with this too. I hadn't really played Wipeout until more recently so that most of these tracks are supposedly recycled doesn't bother me. The sense of speed and the "roller coaster feeling" are great and the game is quite challenging, even on Novice. I've only placed Gold in a couple of normal races. The only mode that really frustrates me is the Zone mode. Its a lot of fun but to get all the way through it and get Gold is nigh on impossible.
Also, most people here probably won't experience the crash. It only happens when you have more than 50 PSN friends.

I bought this game days ago, but after another weekend partly out of town, I didn't get around to playing it.
I know I need to queue up my modern IDM/abstract/minimal electronic music playlist for my PS3, though! I made one for WipeOut Pulse on PSP, but it was limited to 70 tracks (boo!)

Zone mode is a ton of fun, but it can get nerve-racking when you lose concentration and bounce, pin-balling down the track. I don't own a PS3, so I speaking about Zone in the two PSP Wipeout games...the same tracks found in Wipeout HD.
The trick seems to be that you really need to know each track layout before diving into Zone mode. Navigating a memorized track at top speeds is much easier than jumping in cold.
My only exposure has been the demo on the PSP that was released not too long ago for one of the newer incarnations. Racers on mobile systems don't work for me. Not the kind of gaming I do on the go. But on my couch? In High Def? Absolutely!
I've got Gold in the first bracket and about half gold, quarter silver, quarter bronze in the second. I'm trying real hard NOT to harvest loyalty points
For me it was actually the other way around... I did a zone mode for a track a couple times and felt like an expert on the track in the other modes. It really preps you for the turns you can just lean into vs the ones you need to slide through.
Difficulty seems to ramp up pretty quickly. I did a battle mode race, trying out the various AI settings and on Elite I saw my opponents for the first 10 seconds... not sure how close I was to being lapped, but I did notice that I earned more loyalty points in last place on Elite than first place on Novice (as long as you don't run perfect laps, then it's even).
Edit... dang it. That's what I get for working in several tabs at the same time.
Posting more once I get some time to be a little more coherent.

I got it and played it yesterday and this game is so frustrating and difficult. I play on the easy setting and I get my ass whooped. I came in 4th and 5th about a dozen times before finally getting a second place.
I liked the game's graphics and soundtrack though. it`s just like WipeOutXL, just not as revolutionary. the soundtrack doesn`t have all the big name techno artists that XL had but it's still very good and the exact same genre (big beat/jungle/acid)
for 20$ it`s an absolute bargain.

Anybody playing this with the motion controls? I find it to be a pretty cool experience.

I'm a pretty big fan of the series, it's totally niche and I love it. Still haven't bought it yet, still dealing with a massive backlog and Oct/Nov look equally insane for releases. Hell, I still haven't played Siren for more than 15 minutes and that was the last PSN purchase for me.

What if I've never played a Wipeout game before, and have just purchased a shiny new PS3. Should I consider this for purchase?
