Mechwarrior 4: Inner Sphere Wars thread
NEW PLAYERS: If you haven't picked a faction yet, pick House Steiner and then let me know what your game tag is in ISW. I'll set you up from there. If your tag/callsign on ISW is not the same as your GWJ tag, it would be great to know who you are.
Once we get everything sorted out and everyone from Marik to Steiner, I'm gonna let this thread die and use a Wordpress blog that I set up to give out any info: 11th Lyran Guards. Then you can just set up your RSS feed to get your news, etc. And I don't have to deal with a super-slow House Steiner site on any regular basis. We also have forums set up. I have no idea if we'll get any use out of the forums, but, well, it took all of ten minutes to set up, and it's free, so whatever.

Hey, guys -
Feel free to ignore me on this, but I've recently been getting a itch to play on that NetBattletech Hardcore league for MW4: Mercenaries. As far as niches go, this is really the only one I go for. Something about planetary leagues really catch my eye, and not the stripped-down version MechAssault 2 tried to sell us.
Back in the MW3 era, I used to run a mercenary group of 20 active members that managed to go to war with one of the major factions and not get obliterated. Very, very fun times.
I wouldn't mind running a merc group again if there was enough interest. If not enough to start a unit, if anyone wants to just get back into it we can make sure to join the same unit, so we aren't completely on our own.

I really need to pick me up annother copy of this game. I loved that series.
After I manage to scrounge one up I'll post again Logan. =)
I still tell other gamers the story of how I got recruited into a MW4 guild for unknowingly kicking the sh*t out of their recruiter in his Daishi (hope I got that spelling right) with my Bushwhacker.
I didn't even realize I had joined their recruiting server.
God I miss that game.

Man, you've got to be kidding me! When I got around to playing MW4 I would have loved to run with a clan, except you're about three years to late and I can't do the 2400 to 0400 anymore because I gotta be up at 0700.
The problem is that there were terrible imbalances with MW4 Merc in multiplayer. Those chain gun AC5's could chain stun opponents for an eternity. And when you didn't run into those guys, you had all the guys with 3-4 er ppcs getting chest criticals the minute you stepped out of cover.
A lot of the maps that weren't city maps were hilly but largely open ground. Which of course led to the Longbow LRM20 barrages.
Maybe I just jumped into hot water when I was just trying to get my feet wet.

The Daishi (Dire Wolf) was always a joke, IMO. Too slow to be really dangerous; fast Heavies would tear it apart. The Mad Cat (Timber Wolf) and Marauder IIc were my preferred weapons of destruction.

Man I was just going through my CD's and saw my MW4 and Black knight expansion discs. Good times.

Still hoping they bring back a proper MW game, but the chances of that are pretty slim I suppose.
I remember really ticking folks off in MW4 loading up faster medium mechs with the shotgun style cannons (can't remember what they were called) and running circles around all those heavy mechs that were stupid enough to let me get in close. Good times.

In Mech 2 it was always the Storm Crow over the Mad Dog and the Mad Cat and Marauder over the cumbersome Daishi.
In Mech 3 I liked the Shadowcat, Bushwacker, Thor, Avatar and Supernova
In Mech 4 I liked the Cougar, Panther, Shadowcat, Bushwacker, Argus, Novacat, Awesome, and Sunder

What I really miss is going to the virtual pods in Chicago and wrecking people in a Loki. For 10 minutes solid.

I once made a Thor with nothing but as many machine guns as you could load on it. That thing could take out Jesus Christ himself if you were good at maneuvering.
2 or 3 machine guns weren't even worth it, but like, 12, were like an auto-cannon that never stops firing.

No love for the Fafnir? Uziel? Black Knight?
Start this league. Start it now.

Well, the league I'm looking at is NetBattletech Hardcore - who are staunch proponents of making the game as close to the original BattleTech balance as possible. They've made some sweet additions to the game. A sh*tload of new 'Mechs.
It's a lot to digest, actually. I've noticed a lot of downloads, and then you have to recognize that they're out-of-date with MekTek's latest mods, so you have to be out-of-date to play in that specific league.
Basically, if you're in, my guess is you'll have to be a little hardcore just to play casually, if that makes any sense.
EDIT: Aw, but I like saying "sh*tload." Filthy censors.

What times are the matches?
Saving the world, one frisk at a time.
I always preferred MW3 to MW4. I just felt like a closer simulation. But I would definitely be interested in some giant mech stompage, as long as the match times jive with when I'm available. I might even be able to convince my wingman to jump in from time to time. No gaurantees on being any good though, it's been a while.
MW2 all the way, now and forever. Heck, I'd be to settle if Microsoft did an enhanced version for X-Box Live, streamlined controls or no streamlined controls.

Indeed. MW2 used a real military physics simulation engine. None of the following games came even close in capturing the feel of what it must be like sitting inside a mech. Partially because of the engine, partially because they failed to capture the overall drama, feel, atmosphere.
Mechwarrior 4 was the worst of all by far. Cartoony arcade crap.
I preferred MW3, but, none of them could hold a candle to the online community of MW4. Most of the time when I looked at the stack MW4 won out just because I knew there'd be plenty of people playing it.

iswars.com - Inner Sphere Wars.
If you remember the BattleTech 3025 MMO that Konami had in beta before Fasa sold to Microsoft, this is basically taking that concept and taking it to another level. It's a conversion mod that basically uses Teamspeak and has a private channel for each and every planet in the Inner Sphere, plus headquarters for each faction, which, right now, are the Inner Sphere groups plus a few small merc groups. They don't have much mercenary support, but as far as I know all of the Inner Sphere factions are pretty well established.
Anyway, the game automatically handles every drop, automatically reports the results, etc. Aside from some occasional stability issues, it's so cool.
Though I haven't seen much of House Marik. Maybe we'll look at that and see if we can't, y'know, take that f*cker over. Or, alternately, just start up a merc group.

Okay, I just popped over to the ISWars website.
I am so in on this.
I will be digging out my copy of mercs tomorrow and installing the stuff to get online. It looks like a lot of hoops to jump through just to get it running, but man if it's half as cool as it looks...
It is.
Now here's the thing. I've seen a couple of people in House Marik, tops, hanging around the forums. Whenever I look to see who's online, it's either Steiner (whom I'm with right now), Davion, the occasional Kurita, sometimes a Liao or two, and then a few mercs.
Marik, I've never seen online. I see that on one planet they've given as good as they've got, but honestly, Marik doesn't seem to have a presence. At worst we'd have to deal with a few people who insist they're active.
I would wager that, if we could get at least ten players committed, I could convince the owner of the game to transfer leadership to me.
Barring that, we'll just take a merc group, yeah. But I wouldn't mind taking this thing over and having some real wars.

I'm death incarnate in a Bushwacker. I used to be, anyways. I'm going to try and get this game reinstalled, see how things go.
Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles

Oh man, if I could remember my Atlas load-out I could rip you all a new one in Mechwarrior 4 tonight.
-sigh- Back in the day that I couldn't play a lot of video games I spent a lot of time on this one. They need to make Mechwarrior 5 for the PC, and none of that Xbox Mechassault crap with limited customization. I would fail out of college as a result of a return to their roots probably, but who cares?
Oogaba.
I concur with the MW4 is crap commentary; MW4 was horrible. MW3 was a bit better, but MW2, Clan Ghost Wolf and Mercenaries were AWESOME. Totally full of win.
As for Mech Choice there, I bah! at your Storm Crow; gimme a default Mad Dog any day of the week

I do agree on MW4 vs. MW3 vs. MW2:Mercs.
It's just that, compared to what's out now, optionally for the kind of thing that MW2:Mercs leagues used to bring, this conversion mod and this system is the best thing out.
That, and it's all stock, meaning the 'Mechs that BattleTech is known for, all those variants, those are the ones that you use. So a lot of the bullsh*t customization that happened on MW4 and even MW3 is irrelevant.
My 'Mech choice? Depends on what the team's trying to do. I generally stick with a Catapult with either Arrow IVs or LRMs, because it allows me to soften up targets for the close-range 'Mechs to handle, and I get a good view of the battle to coordinate.
But I'm so used to being Unit/Clan leader whenever I play these games that it's hard to separate myself as just a pilot, these days. =P

So how complicated is it to set up matches? I skimmed through the instructions they provide on the site, and it looks pretty involved.
Anyway, chalk up someone else as interested, though I lack in any multiplayer Mechwarrior 4 experience.
It's about, oh, three steps more complicated than your average drop, all done before the match. Plus, the match can be done at any time. You and a couple of buddies can just roll when you're all on at the same time and do a few drops.
Once you're actually in the game, hard part's over (aside from, you know, winning the battle), the automation takes care of itself from that point on.

I need to play around with MW4 with the 360 controller. I think it could work out well but I'm so used to the old skool Joystick/keyboard setup.
