The kids I volunteer with are putting on a human chess play for the parents and I'm having a hard time finding instrumental renaissance music. I thought The Witcher soundtrack will work but once I started listening to it that didn't work out so well. Anyone have resources they could link to?

Not sure how faithful to the period you want to be but the Brandenburg concertos by Bach might be a nice ambient choice. Brandeburg Concerto #3 is my personal favorite.

If your looking for something more along the lines of minstrel music... man, not even sure where to find that sort of music. Maybe try and find ren-faire performer websites with MP3s.

Can I ask why you want it to be Renaissance music? Renaissance music has always felt very transitional between Medieval music and the Baroque period to me (with the exception of madrigals, which I hate). If you want that kind of ambience, I would have thought that Baroque chamber music would be a good match. Bach and Handel both produced vast quantities of music like this. If you want it to be fairly unobtrusive (presumably this is why you specify instrumental) then Handel's Water Music or Xerxes would work, as would the usual suspects like Albinoni and Pachelbel's Canons, Bach's Brandenburg or Double Concertos, and of course Vivaldi's Four Seasons. You could also try Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits.

Because that's the only one I know. I'd never heard of Baroque till I Google'd the term from your post.

edit: I didn't realize the Civilization 4 soundtrack was chock full of this stuff. Just from Bach alone I have about 56 minutes so hopefully I can get just a little more to cover my needs. Thanks for the help.
