Old console strategy games?
I have a PSP with custom firmware, a lot of emulators, and a need for strategy games.
How are the Civilization console versions (Civ 1 on SNES and Civ 2 on PSX)? Any good? I'm quite bummed that Revolution isn't making it to the PSP, especially after the excellent port of Pirates!
I used to have a couple of Genesis games, Starflight and Star Control II, but never got around to them. How are they?
What other strategy games for consoles (NES, SNES, Genesis, and PSX, particularly) are worth my attention? I usually ended up playing such games on the PC, obviously, but I'd dig having more portable strategy.
I never got around to Advance Wars 2 on GBA, which I can now play on the gpSP emulator, so that's something.

Starflight and Star control are awesome, Pirates actually plays fairly similarly to them in some respects, and Mass Effect also stole some of its better (but poorly implemented) ideas such as planet exploration from them.
Populous, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms (all of them), Ogre Battle, also come to mind. There are many more, but you will never finish all the ones I listed, and all of them were superb games, and some of the best of their times.
Supposedly Activision has a subsidiary who's working on another Star Control/Starflight sequel, but they may have missed the boat slightly, since if they remain true to the original IP, then they'll most likely be panned as a Mass Effect ripoff by most gamers who didn't play the originals.
Advance Wars 2 is a great place to start. It's a great title with a lot of charm.
If you're into the PSP's current library, I can't say enough good things about Jeanne D'Arc. It was my Sleeper Hit of '07 and damn near my favorite game last year, bar a few other "bigger" console titles.
As for older titles, X-COM: UFO Defense was released on Playstation and is considered one of the best strat titles of all time. Front Mission 3 is another awesome PSX title.
Dune: The Battle for Arrakis is an old Genesis game that was great too.
I'm either playing through or have played through most of the PSP's strategy/tactical offerings. It's the main reason I'm looking for more on the ol' emulators. Jeanne d'Arc and Field Commander are the titles I'm finishing up right now.
You mentioned the PSX X-Com port, was the port very good? As long as it controls decently and isn't a neutered version of the PC title, that would be perfect.

Both Dune 2 and Star Control 2 are far superior on PC (back when PC gamers were clearly superior than console equivs heh)
Centurion on the Genesis was actually decent to me, one of those hit and miss games with reviews all over the place at the time. I know there was more than one strategy game I enjoyed back then though, but I'm drawing a blank for now. Herzog Zwei on Genesis is sometimes known as the first RTS ever from the hardcore (not just the PC elitists who thik they're hardcore), but I've never played it, might be worth checking out as it preceeded Dune 2.
PSP Wise, you have FF Tactics, Jeanne Darc, Field Commander (easy, but satisfying), tentative recommendation on Disgaea since there is a lot of grind which I've talked about on another thread. Gangs of London also has a pretty fun and meaty Risk style "mini game" that a lot of people have said is more fun than the core game itself with the horrible controls etc. I would also recommend Killzone Liberation as that's one of the best games on the PSP, it's labelled as an action title but theres a lot of strategy involved. I would say it's a strategy action game.
I'm just gonna say Ogre Battle one more time; I love that game pretty hard. Ogre Battle. Oh yeah, feels good.

Another vote for Star Control 2 here. Starflight and Star Control are very similar in core gameplay, but SC2 has a much better story. Shinning Force 1 and 2 for Genesis are great turned based strategy games. One of my personal favorites is Dark Wizard for Sega CD. The cutscenes look nice and the music is good, but the actual gameplay graphics are not pretty (and turn off battle animation!). It is a turn based strategy RPG game on a hex grid. It's pretty tough if you play it completely without a game guide (I was never able to finish on the Sega CD, I finished it later with a Sega CD emulator and GameFAQs).
Star Control 2 has been invoked 3 times in this thread. Naturally I have to throw the link.
Star Control 2, legally free, playable on XP, integrating all of the 3DO sound files. There is no other way to play it in this day and age. If you're not hooked when you meet Fwiffo then you have no soul. Hyperbole aside, it's still a fun story. Don't play the dinky Genesis version when you can play the full game as Jesus intended.
I tried Civ on the SNES, Legion. Controls were abysmal and they... threw in some Japan-ized bookend story that had a tree goddess or something visit you in a dream and tell you that you had to conquer the world with your civilization. Those crazy Japanese...

But I can't play that on my PSP.
Maybe I'll grab that for the laptop though.
Well that addresses that one. Can anyone vouch for (or against) Civ 2 on PSX?
If only someone ported Freeciv to PSP homebrew....

Yeah, play Tactics Ogre for the PSX. That game is impossible to find for the PSOne now and is regarded as a classic.

Also, Tactics Ogre - Knight of Lodis for GBA (since you have the emulator). The game is better than FFTA, in my view. But PSX Ogre Battle should run with no problem too, it's a SNES port, if I remember correctly.

Hard game, but fun when you get the hang of it.
Similarly, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is great as well.

I will second DS's recommendation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. There is also a Shogun game for the SNES that was really good.

I loved Ogre Battle for the SNES. It was also my introduction to the Atlus curse - I was young, and the game was something like $80. Then it was impossible to find.
It sounds like the same thing happened with the PS1 version.

I remember having fun with Civ 2 on the PSX... but I was kinda unrefined in those days, and my viewpoint was perhaps skewed by "extracurricular activities". <---- read "mostly vodka"

Nobody's mentioned Nobunaga's Ambition yet. Fantastic game, and it's been out on a lot of different platforms (I've only played the SNES version). It's the predecessor to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, and while the RotTK are much loved they never grabbed me like Nobunaga's did.
Lots of great suggestions.
Imma gonna go make PSP EBOOTS of Civ 2, Ogre Battle, and X-COM. After those, I'll fire up all of the emulated games.

There were a fair amount of strategy games released for the SNES, the problem is they are all in Japanese. A lot of them have hacked english translations floating about on the web, though. I was able to find playable (on ZSNES) English versions of these games:
Bahamut Lagoon
Fire Emblem Thracia 776
Front Mission
Dai-3-Ji Super Robot Taisen
Der Langrisser
The quality of translation is variable (Der Langrisser's translation is just awful, and Fire Emblem is somewhat incomplete) but they're still worth checking out.
Also don't forget the old TG-16 gem Military Madness.
I just thought of one myself. My best friend growing up was a huge fan of Third World War on Sega CD. I've always meant to give it a try.
The PicoDrive emulator supports Sega CD games. Gotta try that.

It's not a typical turn-based tactical game, but if you want to while away a few ours, try out Carnage Heart for the PS1. It's basically a robot combat game with a strategic map element and base-management elements, but the primary draw is engineering and programming the brains of your OKE (overkill engines, read: robots) that do all your fighting. This is where the game really shines, as you're basically using an icon driven programming language to cover all your robot's behaviors. You then let them loose on the strat map, and can only observe them when they go into battle. (Making the requisite programming changes in newer models of your OKE's.)
Fun stuff, albeit a bit dated.

The "granddaddy" of console TRPGs, for me, are the Genesis SHINING FORCE games.
Also, if you haven't played VANDAL HEARTS for the PS1, it's definitely worth it... pretty easy, all told, but it has a lot of charm.

Try out Kartia, it's an old Atlus PS1 game.

It has a fun multiplayer mode as well, which is awesome, and was largely unheard of then. I believe it was the first TRPG I played with that sort of functionality.

Military Madness from the Turbographix 16, re-released on the PS1 as Nectaris and also now available on the Wii Virtual Console. Advance Wars and Daisenryaku are direct descendents of this granpappy in gaming, no doubt.

It has a multiplayer mode? Huh. I think I'll have to pull it off the shelf myself and check that out. Never did beat the damn thing, so there's another excuse right there.
