*Legion*'s SOCOM: Confrontation lust thread
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 - 9:50pm

Joystiq posts new SOCOM screens.
As Slant Six revealed in this past EGM, the SOCOM trailer video that we saw last year was from an extremely early build. The game had only been in production for a few months.
Two new screens have been released, showing more detailed environments than we saw in that old trailer.
Playstation.Blog says a "flood" of new information is coming in the next EGM. Eeeee! ![]()

It's going to be a long night.
Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles

This game rounds out my 5 titles needed before I purchase a PS3 requirement.

Mmmm....Socom.
I have really high hopes that Slant Six will bring Socom back to it's true roots (I and II) but I'm still worried that it's not going to live up to the expectations of the fans, especially after the debacle that was Socom III.
Anyway, here's some new info to tide us over for a bit. 1UP & EGM have a hugh blowout in the May edition of their magazine and here's a snipit about the Special Forces teams that are available in the game:
Also, rumor is that Sony will release a bundle package with Socom:Confrontation and their "official" PS3 blu-ray headset.
Currently on a gaming hiatus until the fall.
Didn't Sony bundle PS2 headset with one of the previous SOCOM game... I don't see any reason why they would not do it for this release. They need to get headsets out to people, since it seems like one of the major complaints about PSN, is that practically no one is talking due to lack of bundled headsets with PS3.
As for the game, looks good.

What is this new and unfamiliar stirring that I feel? Can it be...that I am starting to desire a PS3?
Also, I thought this was kind of funny:

Slant Six wasn't responsible for that debacle, and constantly refers to their design philosophy on this game as returning to classic SOCOM, so I think some optimism is warranted.
The bar they need to reach really isn't all that high. Replicate the classic SOCOM style of combat, with the benefit of hardware that can actually make the game not look like complete ass this time.
I'm going to assume bluetooth headset, though a headset that plays Blu-Ray movies would get me to buy the retail pack instead of the download.

I know Slant wasn't responsible for S3, I'm just saying after that installment, we need to be cautious with the hype.

Hail IW-80, Hail IW-80, Hail awesome PMN mines that I hid in unsuspecting places and my teammates usually killed themselves because they weren't paying attention when I took the time to call them out at the beginning of the round, Hail...

No, the MGL was N00B. I have painful memories of Night Stalker games (and others too) where people would nade spam my spawn at the beginning of every round.

I still think the 32 players is a problem but we will see. 8 vs 8 is a perfect number of players and easier to run a team but what ever. I still bought a ps3 for this game....yes I'm a very sad man.....

One thing I loved about SOCOM 2, which far too few people seemed to pick up on, is how significantly you increased your chances of surviving grenades by going prone. A grenade would practically have to land on top of you. On maps like Night Stalker, it was a quick "run to cover, hit the deck!" start to every round.

1up announces the official release date - 09/16/08
We've brought you several big stories on SOCOM Confrontation in the past month, but today Sony passed on one more important piece of information: a release date. The latest iteration of the popular online shooter franchise will be arriving on September 16.
To celebrate this news, tomorrow Sony will be launching SOCOM.com, an online community site devoted to the game. Pre-release, the site will provide regular news updates as well as a place for fans to get together. Once the game has launched, gamers will discover full integration with the website, including near real-time stat tracking, clan management tools, and more.
You can check out 1UP's most recent online preview of SOCOM from the beginning of the year, but if you want a more up-to-date and in-depth look at the game, you'll want to pick up the May issue of EGM -- the one with the colorful SOCOM cover below. Check it out on newsstands next week or in your mailbox any day now if you're a subscriber. EDIT: And enjoy the new exclusive screenshot above!

So, PS3 exclusive, right? That's a shame. Oh well, there's always GTA4.
SOCOM has always been a Sony owned property.

Socom = Sony's Halo. It's their bread and butter...
Currently on a gaming hiatus until the fall.
Well, sort of. Zipper was an independent studio who published exclusively through SCEA. In the build-up before the PS3's release, Sony purchased Zipper and, along with it, the SOCOM property. Now they've got Zipper and another studio, Slant Six, working on the SOCOM property. Zipper parlayed their lucrative IP into a nice acquisition offer by Sony. Zipper is supposedly working on the official "SOCOM 4" game, but right now it's Slant Six at the forefront of SOCOM, having released the Full Spectrum Warrior-style SOCOM: Tactical Strike on PSP, and now coming with the first PS3 offering in Confrontation.
And 93 is right. As much as Sony has tried to push Killzone and Resistance, it's SOCOM that has the dedicated fanbase, which posts just shy of Halo-like numbers in terms of number of online players, despite receiving much less attention (though it looks like Sony is hard at work changing the attention part, having landed an EGM cover story for what is an online-only version of the franchise).
