Got a Job at Zombie Studios
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 - 6:32pm
I've been working towards a job in the game industry in one way or another for the past ten years: computer science at university, two years of art school, cranking on a demo reel... Today it all paid off. I just accepted a position as a 3D artist at Zombie Studios in Seattle.
Butterflies on a Mothra scale have taken up residence in my abdomen. I start next Monday, so they have time to vacate before work begins.
I don't know anyone in the community all that well, but you're all like-minded folk and I wanted to share my excitement with someone. Hope to be able to join some more of you on Xbox Live and Steam now that I'm not swamped with job hunting in the evenings.
Thanks for letting me share. See you in-game soon.
~ Matt

Grats!
If you think working in the game industry will net you more time to play games, you are sorely mistaken =P
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
Way to go! Watch your brain though. I hear that zombies are hungry.

Nervous is a good way to start. Be confident in your abilities, but not too confident.

Congrats, man!

That's great man. Remember to take some time off in August for the Slap and Tickle at PAX. You won't even have to drive far.
Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.
For clarification, "bnpederson" is pronounced "Brian."

Thanks for all the kind words, folks. It's nice to be employed, especially in a job that I'm so passionate about. I feel like a legitimate member of both society and this site now, what with "Jobs" being in the title.
That may very well be the case. Every member of the interview team told me that the company pushes for a good work / life balance, however. There will still be crunch periods, but I'm hopeful that they'll stay contained.
Sweet deal. I hadn't checked on the Slap and Tickle thread for a bit, so I wasn't aware we'd nailed down a time or location. I'll definitely be there if we're not on a milestone crunch. Maybe Zombie will have a booth at the expo.
Awesome Sauce'em.
Now these game companies need to start hiring Mechanical Engineering students as consultants.

Right, that's the usual boilerplate nonsense. Don't kid yourself, the gaming industry is a place of long, long hours. That being said, it also produces very tight-knit teams, and working stupendous hours every week doesn't seem so bad when you have a bunch of pals doing it with you, and you all go bleed off the stress together frequently. Some folks thrive there, others do it for a year or two and then leave forever. No reason not to take the shot and see which type you turn out to be, congratulations!

Geez, and they actually own zombie.com. That's +10 right there.

Grats man! Best of luck.
