Saint's Row 2 won't be bug-free
Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 - 2:56pm
Of course it's true and inevitable that a game will have bugs at release, but that's still a piss-poor attitude for a developer to take, especially on a console game.
On the plus side, Saint's Row 2 still looks like it's going to be a lot of fun and the article includes a video that's definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it before. ![]()
EDIT: Title changed to be slightly more neutral, for our more delicate gangstas.

I'm not sure why you're ripping into him for being honest. Every game has bugs. No developer wants a game to be buggy.
Where's my f*cking caaaaaaaaaaar...
At least they're being upfront in telling us we're expected to pay $60 for a product that's unfinished.

I love the Joystiq magic they work there. It's like the big "KEN LEVINE ADMITS BIOSHOCK'S ENDING SUCKED" headline they ran a while back. Well, okay, but that's...not exactly what he said.
Edit: and yeah, what Spunior said.

Gotta love outlandish attention grabbing headlines that completely take what was said out of context.
Ugh.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.
Whoa!
My Gamercard
There are extremely few games out there that release completely bug free. In all honesty, I can't name one.
How is this news?

I just played through and completed Just Cause, and I loved it. It had about 3 times the amount of bugs Saint's Row had. I don't mind reloading my game a few times when the Havok engine decides to turn cars into schizophrenic, weightless pieces of code
Given the nature of open ended games, I'm more forgiving of the glitches.

I actually know someone who works at Volition, who worked on SR and is working on SR2 currently. They are well aware of the shortcomings of their previous game, and everything he's said has actually made me very, very stoked to get a copy of this game.
And that article sucks, it was a completely unfair hatchet job, on the same level as a US presidential race commercial.
Agree that this is a whole lot of nothing. Saying "no game is entirely bug free" seems pretty much like saying "the earth is round."

Because yeah, every game has bugs. That's something you comfort yourself with AFTER the release. Up until release, you do your damnest to ensure the game is flawless.

Um... yes?
I don't see the problem here. I'd consider him a lunatic if he was to promise that the game, or any game, will be completely flawless.
Just sounds to me like he's already making excuses is all.
Look, I said in the original post that it's realistic. All I'm saying is I think it's a bad attitude to take during development.
Besides, remember when we were all so incredibly outraged that XBox Live allowed companies to patch games after release? Weren't we kind of demanding perfection at that point?
No need to pile on Lobster.
Additional note:
It's a pet peeve of mine when people say "ummm...yes?" or "ummm... no." Seems like it's nothing but a cheap way to add snark to a statement that would otherwise be dangerously civil.

Uhmmmm.... no?
It sounds to me like you want your developers inexperienced and blindly optimistic. Think about what you said... then picture Steve Ballmer. If he told you that Microsoft will be shipping a bug-free operating system, would you believe him? No, there is a level of inevitability with software errors, and recognizing this is the first step towards building a better product. But that is my opinion. Also, I like to pet peeves.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
Lobster prefers his snark to be of the uncheap variety.

Geez, you guys are acting like I believe a game will be bug-free through the power of positive thinking.
I just happen to think there's a difference between, "we'll do our best," and "we'll do our best, but nobody's perfect."
There's no reason to attack me en masse just because I don't like it when a developer is already making excuses for his product months away from shipping.

I'm still eagerly looking forward to this. That first game was lots of fun.

Yeah I read that Joystiq article again thinking I missed the point, but the whole thing reeks of a low brow comedic attempt to stir up some good old fashioned haterade. Must be a slow news day, or someone wants free diggs.

How is that "making excuses?"
You know there will be bugs. We know there will be bugs. He knows there will be bugs. But through the power of denial as long as we don't invoke the bugs before launch we can expect a better product?
If he said: "This game will ship PERFECT!" This thread would be filled with people shouting "BS!" So when a developer goes out of his way to not feed us a line of BS and instead acknowledges that any game with a feature list as long and diverse as Saints Row is going to end up with a few screw-ups he's suddenly not trying hard enough?
I know we're in election season and all, but not everyone has to lie to us.
With as much fun as I had with the first Saints Row the sequel would have to kick me in the nuts or set Xboxes on fire for me to hesitate picking it up come launch.

To be fair, I've seen similar headlines at other websites, too, and it is sad since news like that might get that guy into trouble, thus achieving the opposite of what he actually tried to do: being upfront and open about the nature of software development.
Yeah, it's tough to watch the media blowing this out of proportion. If you write software of any complexity, you will ship with a buglist. Just a fact of life. You fix the highest priorities and the lowest hanging fruit up until you have to freeze the code, and you live with the rest, or fix it with a patch. I can easily see how he could make this comment without thinking, as it's simply a given in the software business.
Next I'll be reading headlines that meteorologists admit to not being 100% accurate in their predictions.
