Steve Chenault of Troll Lord Games has just given word on the Troll Lord forums that original D&D publisher and co-creator Gary Gygax has died in his home, last night or this morning. Details are still sketchy and the forum site is not loading so well at the moment, but here you are. We'll get you more when we can.
I had the pleasure of at least shaking his hand. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family, and I'll roll a few dice for him tonight.

Sad to hear. But it was a life well lived and his influence touched many of us in this hobby. Some of my fondest memories growing up were playing D&D with my father, brothers and friends.

One of the rare people whose works still intersects my life on a weekly, if not daily basis. Not only from playing D&D in 4th grade, but half of my favorite video games wouldn't really exists if not for him.
A sad day indeed.

Noooooooo!
That is sad, he was a cool guy. Hey, at least he had a great life!
Awww...damn. I tip my +1 Hat of Wishes to you, Mr. Gygax. Rest well, you've earned it.

Tis a sad day. But his life touched so many of us.
The voices say hello.
I heard that Orcus was upset at the poor quality of Gary's blood offering and gated in a pair of Type V demons through Gary's fireplace. Messy.

I still treasure the the instructions from my original D&D boxed set. I think it was the first edition after chainmail. Some of you might have it too. The manual was the blue & white image of a dragon peering out from a dungeon at a group of adventurers peering in from the foreground.
Sad to hear he has passed away. Maybe he gets to enjoy an eternity of adventure and dungeon crawling in whatever lies beyond.

Me and my co-workers feel he should have opened his hand while dying and dropped dice. He would be rolling for Init and a roll for burial or cremation. This would be a most fitting end to a great man. It's funny you don't really talk about the people that make things so damn fun until they are dead.

Wow, he sure was an influence, sad to hear he finally kicked it. At least he left behind a legacy eh?

But what a great legacy to leave, having influenced the imagination of millions. Very few of us are privileged to have our work resonate on such a large scale.

Keep your eye on Colbert Report this week. He once bragged about going to the first GenCon and meeting Gygax. I bet he'll give his passing a mention on the show.

Sad news. The man basically gave birth to an entire hobby.

A sad day indeed. I just saw the news and rushed over here to post it. Clearly, I should have realized a GWJ'er would have already taken care of it.
In any case, he left a fine legacy. I have many, many fond memories thanks to his creation.

Wish I could say the same.

Seriously, though, AD&D was a cornerstone of my youth. I probably spent weeks, if not months, designing dungeons that nobody would ever play. It fired up the imagination like nothing ever has since.

Zing!
I never played D&D, but in my youth I enjoyed Wizardry, which I'm told was a derivative of it. So RIP.
Giggled at that one.
Sad to hear that he passed, though.

You know, at first I thought some of these D&D puns were in bad taste, but hell Gary's probably having a good laugh too. He was a huge influence on me as a gamer and DM, and I enjoyed many of his novels. Gygax was a class act and I'll always think of him as the ultimate guildmaster.
my vote cancels out yours
I'll pipe up to say this is probably the most heartwrenching news I've read in a while. To think of the RPG as basically his creation and all the games that have sprung from Chainmail and original DnD, this man had a huge influence on this life. May he rest in peace.
