Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts I-IV
There's a new Nine Inch Nails album out, of sorts. It's a 36 track instrumental album.
Here's the info from the website:
Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."
There are a variety of different options for getting, five bucks for all 36 tracks plus a 40 page PDF and digital extras as well. Also a 9 track sampling for free. There are more options that include the downloads plus physical items such as the tracks on two CDs, a DVD data disc of all the tracks, and a Blu-ray disc with the songs in high-def along with an accompanying slideshow.
The website seems a bit slow right now, I imagine it's getting hit pretty hard. This seems to be the way Reznor is interested in releasing all of his new work, and I'm definitely on board with it, I hope it's a success.

Might help if I posted the URL...

... and I purchased the $300 version.

I am so tempted to get that one. At the very least I'm going to get the $75 version.

Man, I was so tempted to get the $300 version, but I shied away. I've got the download link to the full version but it's going super slow for me. Can't wait to sit back and listen to it all!

Seems like an interesting extension of the In Rainbows idea, and knowing how crazy a lot of NIN fans are, I'm sure the deluxe packages will sell like hotcakes. The $75 version is tempting me with its DVD of multi-track files, but I think I'll just grab the $5 download in FLAC format for now (or a bit later perhaps, once the load has died down) to see if it's any good.

I love this kinda stuff, I'm gonna wait for the site to calm down a bit before I try and grab it. I'd love to get the $300 pack, but money's kinda tight right now. For now, I'll have to just grab the songs and see if I can grab the others later.

Wow... uh, are you guys all millionaires or just die-hard NIN listeners!? I don't think I've ever spent more than $70 on any of my CD or album boxsets. And as much as I want to support Reznor's new venture, that $300 price tag seems a bit high. I guess I was just surprised at the number of people that considered it a legitimate option.
Personally, I'm going to give the freebie tracks a listen and no matter what I'll probably buy the CDs.

Yea, the $10 deal for all the songs on 2 CDs is too good to pass up. Unfortunately, for some reason, I can't get passed the email page. It keeps telling me that the CAPTCHA code is wrong. I guess it could be because of the high load of people slamming the site, so I'll just wait until tomorrow to grab it.

I don't remember any captcha.
I got the $5 version in Apple Lossless, converted down to AAC and archived away. I'm half-way through disc two. I love it, think it's brilliant, but knew I would since I'm a massive fanboy.
Seriously debating the $75 version, against the judgement of others.

The store link is timing out for me right now, but hopefully it'll be able to get through soon.

Man, I'm having such trouble with this right now -- i got about 60MB in to the 600-or-so MB FLAC download, and it timed out, and every attempt to resume since has met with either a failure to connect, or a brief bit of downloading followed by another timeout. At one point I got an error page telling me that I'd exceeded my download count, but at least that seems to have stopped coming up now. I think I'll just have to give up on this and try resuming it again in a few hours.

Obviously I'm going to spend the fiver on the digital download, although the store is down for now. When will online vendors understand that I'm not going to pay for crappy quality MP3s, but will happily pay for high quality? (And yeah, a fiver is ridiculously low for a double album.)
I might buy the CD version just out of support, but really, I have just no use for physical music media these days.

Ooph.. $300? I'm a NIN fans but Jesus tap-dancing Christ... even the $75 version is expensive as all get up and f*ck. hmm, Slickdeals says that it's $5 for the HFT in digital with some extras.. Interesting.. have to think about this one.

This was WAY out of my current budget, but unfortunately I'm a hardcore NIN fan and a hardcore completist by nature, so I had to take the plunge. What is sad though is that I ordered the $300 version from ainr.com which is an affiliate site which let me circumvent the web site troubles but they haven't sent me the download link yet.
Chances are some items will show up on the trading post in the near future as I attempt to avoid homelessness.

NIN also put up the free download on a lot of torrent sites, so you can get that there and save their bandwidth and your time.
Also cool that everything on Ghosts I is licensed for non-commercial use under creative commons, if the Conference Call needs som background music for the next Halloween skit or something.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
I haven't enjoyed anything from NIN in years and years, and I don't know if I'll enjoy this, but I must say: This is the right way to release music. Give your fans the choice of what media to get it on, and how much they pay. I'm loving it.

My only beef right now is the one-time download links for those who purchase. I finally got my email link this morning and the download keeps stopping, and I know if I close the browser window I might lose the one-time download session.

Yeah, I just tried downloading it once again only to time out. Once again we see that digital distribution is a great idea that can't quite follow through on execution.

I am sure that the server is being hammered, I will try to d/l tonight, in the mean time, I will enjoy the stream
Who Am I?
I'm trying to get the $5 version, but the site is not working. The streaming audio works though, and I love what I hear.
Trent Reznor makes me feel like I'm in highschool again, he's the only one that gets me this exited about music anymore. It makes me want to wear NIN T-shirts and put posters all over my cubicle.

I've always been a NIN fan so I'll be getting the $5 download as soon as the site-load eases up a bit. The streaming stuff is great so far.
It really is refreshing to see these new purchasing options emerging for consumers. It seems like a win/win proposition between the artists and their fans as all the "middle man" melodrama is virtually cut completely out. I'm curious what the profit margin is (comparatively) for the artist with this alternate distribution avenue in place.
It seems as though a project of this nature (completely instrumental and a double album) might have been a harder sell to execs if only the traditional sales models were in place. Trent isn't as market friendly as he was 15 years ago and I'd venture that without this new form of digital distribution where the artist can sell directly to the consumer w/o having to deal with packaging and retail b&m sales, it's possible that we'd never see a retail version of this double album.
With other artists jumping on board with this model, it opens up new possibilities for artists to be more free and adventurous with their music without fear of being shot down by corporate execs who feel that new sounds may not necessarily be marketable.
We're definitely witnessing a bold new territory in the music industry where technology is empowering artists instead of breading stagnation and conformity. Great stuff.
Well there is an update on the NIN site
Who Am I?
It's always funny to me when the money-exchanging part works relatively well but the delivery part fails utterly. I'm a modest NIN fan and I got in to support the model. I had success paying and complete lack of success downloading. Of course I'll try again later, but what did they expect?
Rock Band Name Generator!... too funny to merely be coincidence.

This looks totally awesome. I can't afford much right now but I'll probably get the cheap download and if I can go back later for the more expensive stuff (I'd really love that Blu-ray), I definitely will. Good on him for taking this kind of initiative, I hope he succeeds at it.

I had the exact opposite problem. Once I finally got the order placed, the download was relatively speedy.

Got the whole thing off of torrent - after 20 tracks I bought the $75 package.
Impressive body of work, and I support doing things differently.
Seriously? Someone put the whole thing on Bit Torrent? I've lost all faith in humanity.

Yup - and Trent made at least $75 (from me) because of it.
Also, In Rainbows was still out there in torrentland even though Radiohead was giving it away for free via their site.
Also, I'm going to grab that f*cking torrent because I paid my $5 and Trent's download servers are still choked like Michael Hutchence.

After a lot of trying to actually pay for the thing I managed to get in last night and the download went really well for me. I hope they're able to sort all of their problems out and soon because from what I've heard of the album so far, it's easily worth the five bucks for just the regular download.
