It is official I am done (Chicago Bears)
After 28 long years as a die hard Chicago Bears fan the camel's back has broken. What was the straw that did it? Resigning Rex finally did me in. I have lived through some of the worst decisions in football. Starting with destroying that 85-86 team and the run of horrible player acquisitions year after year, we won't even talk about the horrible idea that was the Dave Wandstat experiment. Jerry Angelo and the rest of the current administration has finally crushed any spirit Chicago has had for its Bears. The only way I am coming back now is if they bring Ditka back to play QB.
I am still holding strong to my blind love for the Cubs though.
If anyone has a favorite team that needs more support I will be entertaining all offers.

Wow...maybe not something that's going to turn a franchise around, but I find it hard to believe resigning Rex Grossman was such a bad idea that it ranks among the worst made in the last 28 years.

As bad: Tomzac (or however you spell that idiots name)
As bad: Avoleni (just as bad or worse... again dont know how to spell the name)
The Bears have ALWAYS had really horrible QBs... I mean the only "good" one was McMahon and he wasnt that great stat-wise but damn he brought charisma to the team that just elevated everyone's ability to play.
Resigning Rex is just another typical Bear move. You should be used to it by now.

At this point it is personal; I truly believe that the only place on any team Rex belongs is passing out beer in the stands.
No joke one of the first thing my youngest sister said was "Tomzac Sucks."
McMahon was what the team needed at the time, you are correct since him they have had idiot after idiot at that position and enough is enough.

Rex is a QB with starting NFL experience. It is way too easy to belittle and undermine the value that has.
There are 32 NFL teams, and there aren't 32 NFL starting caliber QBs in the league. The Bears are a have-not, and there's no easy solution out there for them. There's not one starting-level QB available in free agency (save for Derek Anderson, who will at least play for the RFA tender in Cleveland if no long term deal is done), and the list of backups is thin too (Josh McCown, Quinn Gray, Cleo Lemon...).
When it comes to QBs, judge slowly. Rich Gannon was a journeyman for 12 years before he made his first Pro Bowl. No other position gets so much better with experience. There's a reason guys like Trent Dilfer have stuck around in the league for so long, and why guys like Grossman and Leftwich will keep getting chances to at least be backups.

I hear my old nemes....I mean home town QB David Carr is a free agent now...Maybe you'd like him instead?
Somebody told me how frightening it was how much topsoil we are losing each year, but I told that story around the campfire and nobody got scared.
Yeah we had a similar discussion here at work. How there are no better choices in the NFL today that are available.
I will fully admit that I am not seeing reason on this at all. I am looking at this simply with the passion of being a life long fan and that is blinding what common sense I have (hey I am cubs fan too so what does that say?).
I look at the facts I look at the free agency, I look at draft prospects and I just can't believe he is our best option right now for 3million this year.
Pharacon wrote:
A draft prospect may still be in the wings, but I guarantee Rex is a better option than a prospect for 2008. Beyond that, maybe not, but Rex isn't under contract beyond that.
The Bears are going to get rid of Brian Griese. They're shopping him for a deal, but he'll be released if a deal can't be made (which is likely, everyone knows Griese will be cut loose). That leaves Grossman and Orton the only QBs on the roster, which means the team either (a) plans to bring in another free agent, or (b) plans to draft someone. I see "b" as likely. It won't necessarily be a high pick, but the team is on the lookout for a QB of the future, and plenty of them come as project players who are drafted in rounds 2-4 and develop over time (hi, David Garrard!)
Rex knows the offense. He's a competent enough, if highly streaky, player.
Options for the Bears at QB:
Free agents:
* Byron Leftwich
* Quinn Gray
* Cleo Lemon
That's about it. The vast majority of free agent QBs are guys who don't have any "QB of the future" potential (Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper, Todd Collins, Billy Volek, Kelly Holcomb). Those are guys you take to fill a backup need. These three guys are guys you take with the hope that they can take another step and become something better.
Draft:
* Chad Henne
* Joe Flacco
* Andre Woodson
* Dennis Dixon
* Colt Brennan
There's a lot of QBs with 2-4th round potential in this draft.

Scratch Lemon off that list, as the Jags have evidently signed him as a back-up...

Yeah. That surprised me. It must indicate that Quinn Gray's price tag is a good bit higher than Lemon's was. I'll miss Gray.

As a life long Bears fan myself, I can't say I was pleased with the news that Grossman was resigned, but at least they got him for cheap. Other QBs who are going to definitely be backups are getting bigger, better deals than what Chicago gave Rex. 3 million for one year is pretty good for a "starting" QB.
And it's not like the Bears are in a position where the QB is going to make or break the season. They have no running game, no wide receivers and 2ish offensive linemen. I'm glad they didn't pay a ton of money for Derek Anderson or trade off some worthwhile talent (do they have that?) for a veteran QB. The team would be just as bad this year, and they'd be likely to get the guy killed with that offensive line. If they're going to get a QB killed, it might as well be Rex.

That name is not to be mentioned. Ever. He could rush for 2000 yards and 30 TDs this season and I would still hate his arrogant, selfish, stupid

Yeah, you have to put this in perspective.
I can count on one hand the number of teams with secure QB's:
NE, IND , JAC, SEA, SD, PIT, GB (don't kid yourself, he'll be back)
Maybes:
Giants, DAL

I think the list needs to be expanded a bit...
CIN with Carson Palmer belongs on the list.
NO with Drew Brees, unquestionably.
CLE and Derek Anderson belongs on the "maybe" list.
But the core point stands. Like I said earlier in the thread, there are 32 NFL teams, and there are not 32 starting-level NFL QBs in the league. Sometimes you just have to get by with what you can get. Teams have won championships that way (ask Joe Gibbs - history aside, Doug Williams was a marginal NFL QB, and Mark Rypien was only slightly better)
I also would say "no" to the Brett Favre returning idea. I'd bet money against it. I've been critical of Favre handcuffing the Packers with his "will I or won't I?" bullsh*t for the past few offseasons. But I don't think for one millisecond that Favre is the kind of asshole that would put the state of Wisconsin into mourning, only to jump back in a couple of months later. If he had any possible intention of returning, he'd just be playing the same old games.

I agree, I really don't think Favre will be back.
Red Grange.
The Bears are a defensive;y-oriented team that builds its offense around field position and the running game. That's a story as old as the NFL (older, actually). I understand all those ESPN and SI jerks make it look like all the cool kids are into the passing game, but they're also into things like T.O. and domed stadiums. Do you really want to support that kind of team?
I can't honestly believe anyone would stick with the Cubs but dump the Bears. If you're going to dump one, dump them both. As for me, I've got my irrational / regional loyalty strained enough already on the Bears and 'Hawks without having the shame of Cubs fandom.

Not *really* a QB. His position in the Hall of Fame is halfback.
Still, he did throw the ball - he averaged less than 2 pass attempts per game (and fewer than 1 completion per game)

How bout Sid Luckman does he count?
Fletcher wrote:
Yes.
Luckman started as a tailback in the single-wing. Back then, quarterbacks played a role more like fullbacks do today, and tailbacks were the primary passers. Quarterbacks still did a lot of the scrimmage calls because they were closest to the line, so a modern QB is more like a combination of the single-wing tailback and QB.
Then came the T-formation, which lined the QB up under center, and thus passers that played tailback before began to become QBs.
Luckman is classified in the Hall of Fame as a quarterback.

All I can say is at least you're not a Lions fan. What is it now, seven years of complete ineptitude under Matt Millen? Feels like a thousand.

Millen is just a regression to the mean for the Lions. 6 postseason appearances for the Lions in the 90s was the aberration. The 1971-1990 run where they failed to win 10 games in any season, and only snuck into the playoffs in 1983 and a strike-shortened 1982 (with records of 9-7 and 4-5), that's the real Lions.
That's right, 4-5 in 1982. The only team in NFL history to make the playoffs with a losing record.
They lost.

Da Bears. Yeah your season isn't looking to bright with Rex Grossman at the helm..... Maybe Da Bears should just put the punt return team out there and direct snap it to Devin Hester.... YOU would have a better chance of scoring. Anyways, Chicago's QB situation has been bleak for quite some time. Since McMahon, Jim Harbaugh or Eric Kramer (if my memory serves me right) is probably been the best you've had and that is not saying a whole lot since I'm not 100% sure the both played for Da Bears. But hey, defense wins championships......I also agree with Legion, Benson is going to have a break out year. Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!
And then there is the Cubs. At least you have Wrigley Field. Right?? Hey by the way, can you get me some good tickets?

After spending my first 25 years in Michigan it's tough to break old habits. (Though I've now been in Indy for almost 9.) I mean if I start rooting for the Colts, then I'd have to start rooting for the Pacers too and I'd much rather be a Pistons fan.
