This is something a bit different for me, and I thought some of my Goodjer homies might enjoy it.

About a week before GDC I got a contract to bash out some music for the GDC build of an Asian-themed PC/XBLA puzzle/strategy game. The two guys who were in charge of the team had differing visions of how the music should be--one of them was interested in thunderous taiko drums and propulsive ethnic percussion, and the other one was interested in melodic traditional Chinese orchestra instruments. My challenge was to find some kind of middle ground, make it sound reasonably authentic and inject a little of my own special sauce in the process.

An mp3 of the menu music can be grabbed here. It's an mp3 rip of a looping wav file, so the ending is a little weird for casual listening. It's not exactly John Williams with the LA Philharmonic, but I think it came out pretty well for a piece that was basically slugged together over a weekend.

Awesome... Very skillfully done and a damn good median for the two styles they wanted.

Pretty cool! Reminds me of the stuff in Jade Empire and those kinds of oriental games. Seems to me like you hit the nail on the head.

PLEASE tell me that's for a remake of Sun Tzu's Art of War... I'd love to play that game again. (I mean, not on a PC that moves the AI so fast it blurs onscreen...)

Oh, and damn you're good, Podunk. Like, really, really good. I keep forgetting how good you are until I hear something new of yours. Wow.

I honestly don't know. All I know about the game comes from a one-line gameplay summary and a screenshot that one of the designers sent me. The screenshot looks cool, though.

I likes me some Asian music, and this puts me in an options-selectin' mood.

I'd actually really like to find someone who produces this kind of music consistantly (and by kind of music I mean Asian-style orchestral since I know you routinely produce music of this quality). Maybe with a little techno thrown in.

I would have liked to toss some electronic-sounding stuff in there, but they wanted it to be acoustic-sounding. Maybe next time.

As far as stuff that is stylistically similar, there are a couple of game soundtracks that tap a similar vein. Duoae already mentioned Jade Empire, which is pretty good. The Mercenaries soundtrack is more orchestral-sounding overall, but it makes some great use of Asian percussion.

There are a number of film scores that you might enjoy too. Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon score is really beautiful. In fact, a lot of his work is worth checking out. Shigeru Umebayashi score for House of Flying Daggers is good too. For a more Hollywood-ized take on it, Hans Zimmer's scores are a good starting point. The Last Samurai and Tears of the Sun are both good examples of accessible Asian-themed writing.

That's very cool, Podunk. If you don't mind me asking, how much of that is live, recorded instrumentation? And what sort of studio setup do you use for that sort of project?

I've been poking around musicmaking lately, trying to get a feel for what I could accomplish with, say Ableton Live, some decent speakers, a snazzy midi keyboard/controller, and some judicious sampling.

edit: Not that I aspire to compose on your level. But I'm curious as to how much music gets made from inside computers nowadays.

It's all samples, though I recorded it all in real time on a keyboard controller. If I'd had more of a budget I would have loved to at least get a couple of live string players in the studio, but as it was it pretty much had to be a one man show.

I'm running a PC with a Presonus Firepod audio interface, Edirol UM-880 MIDI interface, and a pair of Edirol digital monitors. I have a bunch of other hardware--some hardware synths, some outboard processors and a decent mic preamp--but none of it was used in this particular project. As far as software goes, the project was recorded in Cubase, and mastered in Wavelab. Within Cubase I used Native Instruments Kontakt, a few instruments from the factory library, and a number of EastWest/Quantum Leap libraries, specifically Symphonic Orchestra Platinum, Stormdrum and RA.

Nice work, mate! RA is pretty much my favorite invention since the invention of the invention. Seriously - I use it in almost every track I do these days - pop, orchestral, ethnic, and everything in-between. I look forward to being able to share some of my music with the Goodjers, too!

Another recommendation for those who like this type of stuff - AR Rahman's "Warriors of Heaven and Earth". The soundtrack to this film is by one of the world's most prolific film composers - his stuff is amazing!

I'm looking forward to hearing what you've been working on! Did you ever settle on a name for your project?

RA is a great lib. I'm curious to check out their new Play Engine stuff, but their older libraries are still so useful that I'm having a hard time justifying it.

I've got a few things cooking - the personal project which you mentioned, and a game title for which I'm doing all the music. That wont be released for some time though...and it hasn't been announced, so that's the end of that for now.

I've got Voices of Passion, which uses PLAY. The engine is actually quite slick. My biggest gripe is that it is one more proprietary engine to load up. I was getting used to simply loading up a ton of samples within Kontakt - which was really easy on CPU and memory vs. multiple instances of arbitrary engines. Even so - it is a pretty groovy system. I'll be posting a review of that on CreateDigitalMusic soon...

I'm mostly curious as to whether the PLAY upgrade to EWQLSO adds any significant functionality or of it's just going to be a pain in the ass because I have to use a DRM dongle and I can't load up my sh*t in Kontakt anymore. The new PLAY libs look neat, but again, there's a fair amount of redundancy with what I've already got. I'll probably get around to SD2 at some point, if only for that Metallica kit.

Those comments are especially nice to hear, since I was particularly concerned about a) creating a vibe that didn't feel like it was better suited to some faster-paced type of game and b) trying to put together a looping piece that would stand up to a lot of repetition without getting annoying. Thanks.
