Jumper: Why the hate?
Look, I know that the general consensus of opinion when it comes to Jumper is a resounding "OMG it suxz!", but I just don't get it.
It's got excellent locations and visual effects, well acted (though script-limited) characters, and a decent story. Sure there are places where another 30 minutes of expositional would have served the story well and by the end you'll practically scream "why the **** didn't you just use a gun?!?", but other than that it's OK. Not stellar, not award winning, but OK.
So what is it? Is it the fact that Hayden Christensen is in the movie and he's still getting hate from the Star Wars fanboys? Is it the fact that the main character starts out not giving a damn about helping anyone and is, therefore, not a "good guy"? Is it the minor plot holes that are present to one degree or another is every superhero movie? Is it the fact the ending was a placeholder for a second movie? What?
I'm at a loss. I went to this movie to see if it lived down to it's rating and came away thinking it was flawed excellence and the reviewers were fools.
What did you think?

I think it's got Hayden Christensen in it.

I hated it (even though I worked on it) because Hayden Christensen is such a jerk in the movie you start rooting for the bad guys. It was very painful to watch.
Yay! You liked the VFX

I'm not a Star Wars fanboy, but his acting was truly abysmal in those movies. I got annoyed watching him in the previews for this flick. I've not seen it, so I can't say whether or not the film has merit, but I'm not going to subject myself to Christensen if I don't have to.

I figured as much. But can you really blame a guy for bad acting when he's being directed by a control freak like George Lucas? That's like trashing a chef because all he was allowed to use was week old fish.

Yes! Yes you can blame the actor, and yes I would blame the chef!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I hadn't realized that Hayden Christensen is in Jumper. I was actually kind of intrigued by it. Now that I know, I will not waste my $10.

This was a great idea with poor execution and it wasn't Hayden's fault. If anything he made it tolerable. The writers should be kicked in the junk and if this was the first thing Liman had directed i would call him a hack. Since i've liked his other work and this is just not at the same quality i'd say the producers also need a swift kick to the nethers.

So you're telling me that if you were offered the role of Anakin Skywalker you would have turned it down? That's pretty much what you're telling me because any actor cast into that role is pretty much just Lucas acting by proxy.
Then you're a fool.

An actor that can't bring their own voice to a role is a bad actor. And, to answer your question, if I was offered that role and was told that I must do exactly what Lucas wanted, no exception, with none of my input or own character taken into consideration, then yes I would turn that down.

Haven't seen it, but lots of the comments I've read have been that people don't know who the characters are, and don't care what happens to them. I've also read comments about how the main character is a "d-bag" and there's no one to root for.
I've also heard other people who like the book and think the film version is annoying because it is really nothing like the book at all (other than the "jumping" power).
Hell, I don't know why people seem to love certain movies or hate certain movies. If YOU enjoy it, why not just leave it at that and be happy?

Weta did most of the jumping stuff ( sad face
), leaving our company to do tethers etc. I personally did a good deal of the apartment falling apart scene (tethers, debris, etc), and the underwater bubbles shots (kiss bubble swirl, arrival at library). I'm pretty young, so I still feel like going to mommy and showing her what I did in the hopes she's able to post in on the fridge. You're my mommy now Max, I hope that doesn't hinder your active nightlife.

Isn't that basically a quintessential difference between writing and acting?
I know I would've taken the role. And laughed at you after I got back from the bank.

So why does Hayden get all the hate and Portman doesn't? Her dialogue in the prequels was bland at best, horribly stilted at worst. Much like Hayden's.
Don't much care for Portman either. But Hayden didn't do a funny Rap on SNL to make up for it.

She has a resume that provides some protection. I actually think her acting in the SW prequels was worse than Hayden's but I haven't seen anything else he has done, so for now I assume he is a terrible actor who was given a poor script and awful direction. I hear he was good in Shattered Glass, and Jumper looks like a really fun movie, from this thread, I'm thinking the source material may be a problem in Jumper's case.

Oh yes, I'm not hating on Natalie. She's a good actress with several solid films in her portfolio. I've seen one good role of Hayden's (I forget the film's name), so he's got some chops, but yeah... his film choices so far seem to leave a bit to be desired.
GREAT plug!
I didn't see it so... that's my contribution. I'm a movie snob, anyway, and am perfectly happy to prejudge.
To be fair, most peole who aren't used to working with people who couldn't direct traffic do pretty badly in Star Wars. Apparently even Christenssen can give a good performance with the right director (Shattered Glass), but Lucas doesn't do actors.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
It seems like blaming Lucas only weakens Christensen's cred as an actor seeing as I think McGregor did a fine job, and Lucas's past films have had some pretty good actor performances. Seems now you're saying it's because the actors could handle his stiff directing. Which makes me think it's because they were good actors.
I'm not trying to be confrontational on this one, I'm really trying to logic out the arguement.
Letters to the Internet
I wouldn't say it's because their "good" actors, necassarily. It would seem more than they're more professional, more seasoned. Other than an important secondary character in Life as a House (good movie, btw) Christensen's first major hollywood role was Anakin Skywalker. That's an awful large role (arguably the most pivotal character in all of Star Wars lore) to fill fully on the first try.
