Normally I talk to you here about the week's video games, but an issue of staggering importance has come to my attention. I can no longer remain silent. They say that when you have the ability to speak out against that which we all know to be wrong, and you don't take the opportunity, that you then are a willing accomplice, and I will not be an accomplice to this travesty. I speak, of course, of the rampant misuse of the letter Z, or as our adorable friends across the pond call it a "zed".
This crisis is evident now even here in my weekly accounting of coming games, as exemplified by Petz: Wild Animals Tigerz and the absolute abomination that is Bratz Super Babyz. I can not begin to enumerate the number of things in that title that make my skin crawl!
As for Game of the Week, a rare nod to the PSP and Patapon, a curious but intriguing game that seems to ooze style.
The Oscars have come and gone, and this year I got a chance to see all 5 films nominated for the top prize. Despite the fact that I had to leave my pants at the theater, so thoroughly did Juno charm them right off, it was the Coen Brothers' typically obtuse No Country For Old Men that got the nod. Though, kudos on the awards to an ex-stripper with the name Diablo and Glen Hansard & Marketa Iglova's fantastic song from Once. As for this week's DVDs, Beowulf, The Darjeeling Limited and more hit shelves.

How did Bass Fishing for the Wii not get the nod.
I have to say the Wii was made to be exploited as a fishing simulator.
And coming next August Bratz: Gone Fizhin'
When will this assault on the letter "s" be stopped.

You know Canada isn't "across the pond" and we pronounce it "zed" as well.

I'm sure you'll be thrilled to hear that the sequel to Patapon, Pataponz, is already announced for Japan. The site is Japanese, but there are some GREAT screenshots. You can't miss them.
I heard that they were keeping Elysium in the ICU not because he needed intensive care, but because they needed to be careful of his intensity. - Wordsmythe
Patapon! I think this may be the first time my game of the week matches Elysium's game of the week. *shifty eyes*

So is this the Lost game based on the television show? That was actually looking pretty decent I thought.

Juno was a grower. While the first 15 minutes of dialogue made me want to stick skewers in my ears, the movie had won me over by the end. That said, it wasn't best picture material but rather an engaging flick that hit all the right indie notes like it was working its way down a bulleted list.
It's not incorrect to call the Coens obtuse. The subtext of their characters' actions often carries the weight of their movies, and No Country was one heavy f*cker. My favorite movie of last year. I would have picked There Will Be Blood if the closing segment of that film didn't devolve into sko tribute to Montgomery Burns.
And let's not forget that the fact that Braveheart won best picture 13 years ago kind of makes all this discussion of Oscar glory a bunch of nonsense anyway.
Z should be reserved for the great Zombie Apocalypse.
My biggest Pleasant Surprise was for Actress In A Leading Role. This was the toughest category for me because I enjoyed the bulk of the nominations this year so much. My initial vote was for Laura Linny in The Savages, but I had completely forgotten that Julie Christie starred in Away From Her this year (for some reason I thought that movie was last year). When I saw she was nominated, J. Christie immediately shot to the top of my list...That was before I saw Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose just recently.
Seeing Marion Cotillard nominated made me kind of sad because I just knew she didn't have a chance against the media darling Ellen Page (Juno), and more importantly, La Vie en Rose was a subtitled French movie. Regardless, I felt that Marion Cotillard unquestionably gave the best performance of the year.
When she pulled off the win, I was both shocked and elated. On the announcement I let out a cheer as if it were a Superbowl touchdown being scored by my home team...And I never get that involved with film/tv awards.
Runner up Best Moment goes to Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova for "Falling Slowly" from Once (Original Song category). The acceptance speeches from both (including Marketa's from after commercial) was the most charming thing I've seen in a long while.

Laura Linney and Julie Christie both were very good. Haven't seen La Vie en Rose. Question: Why does the best actress award take place so much earlier in the evening than the other big awards? A holdover from yesteryear? (I swear, I'm not an Oscars nerd; I was working last night and it was on the TV in the office.)
That was the moment when I cheered like it was the Super Bowl. I was certain one of those insufferable songs from Enchanted was going to win. I guffawed when, after Glen's acceptance, Stewart said, "Man, that guy was so arrogant." Hilarious.
Fantastic move letting Marketa make her comments.
I felt -- I feel -- that Shawn, Rob and Julian were making out with the game, and as their friend I felt it was important to point out that they were making out with an ugly chick. - Cory Banks, keeping it real
My guess is that they have to throw the tv audience a few bones throughout the night in order to keep them tuned in. If they saved all the Heavy Hitter awards for the end of the show, most people would only watch the last hour or so of the ceremony. By peppering in a few unexpected Big Categories early in the evening, you keep your audience captive for the whole thing for fear of missing something good...and we all know how important those ratings are.
Agreed all around. I actually flipped channels during all the other musical performances. It was a real treat to see Hansard/Irglova perform "Falling Slowly" live and a Triple-Word-Box Score to see them actually win the category. Quite frankly, I though all the other nominees were crap.
John Stewart's joke about Hansard being "arrogant" was the only genuine laugh I got from him all night. Man, he was off his game the whole night, imo.

So... this has probably been brought up before, but why doesn't GWJ actually put on an awards show for best games of the year? Categorically, fan-base/judges, audience, and medium are all present and accounted for. This would be the perfect time of year to do something of that nature, after we've been dragged through the usual glut of Christmas releases and before the glut of summer releases that mark the high points of most years.
