Take a peek at the new addition to the family!
Oh, I finally did the deed! The sight of culdcept saga sitting, unplayable, on my PS2 filled me with such sadness that I had to take action. A traded-in gamecube (a surprisingly reasonable $25 at ebgames) and fifteen minutes of minutae and I was out of the door!
As my grandmother always said, 'It's bad luck to bring home a new console without a large decorative frog.' So,, I traveled to Big Lots and scoured the finest their decorative frog section had to offer. I found this nice color-coordinated guardian for my new console. I'm thinking of calling him Dr. Porkenstein, but I'm open to suggestions.

I ended up doing it fair and square, cash only for the transaction. It's a good feeling knowing that the credit card companies didn't even get a tiny bit of my soul on this sizable transaction. I only have $16 to last me until next Thursday, but I have a full tank of gas and a clear conscience =D
Sorry if this post seems a bit silly, but it's pretty exciting to get a new console. I haven't had a new system since the PS2 in 2002. Have you done any odd celebratory thing when picking up a new system?

Ironically, nothing yet - just setting up the console, getting the profile created, etc. I've been fiddling with the display settings. I have a 4:3 HDTV CRT - so far I've not found a way to enable 1080i and keep it 4:3 ratio, so I may just have to use the 'black barred' widescreen if I want to use the HD signal. Anybody know of a work-around to stretch the 1080i to a 4:3 display? The option is greyed out in the xbox control panel.
After dinner it's going to be time for vodka + culdcept saga, hurray!

I'm in Toronto right now, and just acquired my brother's largely unplayed XBOX 360 in exhange for future considerations. (Namely, my Wii, when he gets the chance to come pick it up).
It was tough to abandon the Wii, but given that I've played all the big games I wanted to to death (Wii Sports, SMG, RE4, Mario Strikers, Zelda, Metroid) and that he likely won't claim it until summer giving me tons of time to enjoy Smash brothers, I figured it was a perfect time to sell high and buy low.
Funnily enough, the post that pushed me over the edge was when Green talked about how he used to be a crazy PC gamer. I thought to myself, "Maybe someday I too can enjoy next-gen hardcore console gaming with the rest of the masses". Good sirs, that day is now.
But before you get too excited, I am planning on digging into my tax rebate to spend $600 on PC upgrades. Best of both worlds, baby!
Oh, and grats on the system Moose. Don't mean to steal your new console thunder, just thought 2 "new console!" threads in 1 day might be a bit redundant.

I know you've just tried Gears on the PC, but once the sour taste wears off you should at least rent it for the 360 and go through cooperatively. The elements that make it a good entry game into console shooters would make it a poor PC shooter, I imagine. I just killed a lot of people tonight without a reticule, and that made all the difference.

I plan on it. My brother bought it and so it's kind of "included" with the system, along with some other shovelware that he was dumb enough to get. (Including some sonic game that is hitting the used bin at EB hard.) In fact, the only way I feel gipped in this deal is that I'm passing him the cream of the crop of Wii games to go with the system and he's leaving me with pretty much just gears. Ah well, spreading gaming in the family is well worth it - I hope his girlfriend gets more enjoyment out of the Wii than mine did.

The short answer is, no.
The long answer is, why would you want to ruin your picture by stretching it? Why get HD just to distort the images?
Just say no to incorrect aspect ratios.
I had a 4:3 HD CRT, and it was heaven after playing on a 1280x1024 LCD PC monitor that did not allow me to force everything into a correct aspect ratio. That was awful.

I've spent a bit of time with the new console. Loads of fun. ^.^ Thanks for all of the welcomes! Here's my brief initial impressions of the stuff I've played with so far, just in case anyone else is curious about the stuff that comes with the arcade version.
Pac-Man Championship Edition
- small graphical tweaks to the Pac-Man formula, and the game seems to control well. However, I couldn't seem to find a way to play just 'regular' Pac-Man - it seems to be just time-attack modes (which I've always hated) - play for five minutes or 10 minutes and see how high a score you can get. Blah. I've always liked the feeling of satisfaction from the original Pac-Man when you finally munch that last dot and clear the level. Maybe it's something you can unlock if you play it long enough.
Feeding Frenzy
Very simple, and kind of fun. I ended up playing this one for about 30 minutes. The fish are amusing and I like the little factoids they present between levels. Plus, it has the barest semblance of a story/progression arc, which is nice.
Boom Boom Rocket
Lots of fun! The girlfriend and I played through all of the songs on medium difficulty. Getting the 'bonus 16x' really makes you feel like you've accomplished something.
Uno
Haven't tried this one yet.
Luxor 2
Attractive, easy controls, and a nice adventure mode. Not really my kind of game though; I played through one level then quit. I might pick it back up in the future.
Viva Pinata
Not sure how this happened, but the demo was ready to play within about 30 minutes of hooking it up to my router. Considering that my download speed tops out at 17kb/sec, I guess it must have been pre-installed on the disc. Holy Cow! This is one pretty game. Kind of a Sim-City light with the adorability ramped up to 11. I think we ended up playing this one for at least an hour, until a syrupent decided it wanted to eat my pinatas. I whacked it with a shovel a couple of times, and it fell down and remained motioinless with 'turd fumes' coming out of its body. I walled it off with fences so the stink from its decomposing corpse wouldn't nauseate my remaining pinatas.
Culdcept Saga
Oh yes! The ol' Culdcept vibe hit hard and fast. I was very impressed with the backgrounds and some of the card art/animations. Great fun, though it looks like they have not veered more than a centimeter off of the path the original culdcept travelled, based on the bit that I played. That's okay, though - more of the same is fine in my book for a title that I enjoyed so much! I won my first match by a narrow margin. Good fight!
I was mainly just curious about the different display modes. My TV (a panasonic tau 32 inch) won't do 720p, only the 1080i, which puzzled me. I though that any set that could do 1080i could do 720p, but perhaps not.
Well, the vodka has settled in nicely, and it may be time to play another round in the story-mode of Culdcept.
Oh! I do not know if I will do much on Live; single-player has always been my original love, and will likely stay so. However, I did set up my Live silver membership, and I kept my username from my Halo 1 PC gaming server.
aFifthofGin is my Live handle! Perhaps I'll see some of you on there at some point, if any are playing Culdcept.

I've been enjoying the 360 quite a bit. I had a slight mishap where I accidentally erased about two hours of progress in Culdcept Saga trying to make a new save game for my girlfriend. Apparently you have to make a new 'profile', yikes! Once we got that straightened out it worked fine. I'm a little concerned that I can't create a 'backup' of a save game in a different slot for this game - being a long term RPG player I've always alternated between several save states.
Question about the 360 - can you use any external drive / flash drive to store game data/downloads? I have a USB-to-IDE/SATA adapter and an unused 80GB SATA hard drive. Can I use this with the 360? I have the feeling that there's *some* sort of trick not letting you do this, otherwise why would anyone pay $70+ bucks for a piddly 20 gig drive? Thanks for any information!
Also, my 360 likes to 'roar' periodically. I assume it's those 60 (80?) mm fans revving up, but man, it's loud. Does anyone know if this is done on a timing cycle, or is there a temperature sensor that controls this? It seems kind of random, because I played Culdcept for about an hour with the 360 roaring the whole time. I got irritated and unplugged the 360. When I plugged it back in and reloaded the same game, it didn't roar at all, even though I played for about 45 minutes. Is there any kind of software fan control?
And how! I just downloaded the Aegis Wing 'demo' (looks like it's the full game.) Though it took me nearly an hour to get the thing (slow connection here) I've had a blast with it. I've also enjoyed N+
Oh! And I saw that one of the 'featured demo download' games was Worms. Does anyone know if this is the awesome 2D (world party, armageddon) worms, or the cruddy (at least the bit that I played) 3D worms?

Oh Oh! Puce was bad today. Leap day sale + Sony 40 inch Bravia + credit card + price matching discount = more soul sold to the plastic and an amazing display for the moose.
I've always heard 'better a good 720p display than a middle of the road 1080p display' and wow, after three hours of driving around, price matching and head-scratching, I finally settled on this <$980 40 inch Sony Bravia. Man, oh man - I had the grin plastered on my face all day (well, still do.) Even though it's a month's take-home pay, it all seemed worth it once I booted up this bad boy for some Grim Grimoire and the 360's Culdcept Saga (720p, tasty!) Beautiful colors, great blacks - just the kind of thing that makes your inner kid do jumping jacks and somersaults for hours on end. ^.^
Here's a pic of the proud new beast. Pictured just out of the picture: The nice frog that beams over his new 360 and TV ward!
Yet another question for the wise Goodjers: I read with some alarm that the HDMI cables pass audio also. How can I pass a nice high-quality HDMI signal from the HDMI port on my 360 to this nice new screen, yet take the audio from my 360 into my receiver+external speakers? Or, if you are blessed with HDMI, are you stuck with the cruddy speakers that are pre-installed on the TV? Thanks for any advice!

That's the exact TV I had (and Logan has now).
The Panasonic could do 1080i and not 720p because CRTs are not progressive scan devices. So all you'll get on a CRT is 1080i.
If it's like any other device (my 360 is an older, non-HDMI version), you just tell it in the sound settings to output over optical instead of HDMI. That's if it doesn't do so automatically. My PS3 and DirecTV HD DVR both pass video over HDMI and audio over optical.

The problem with that is that the HDMI 360's don't have an optical output on them. I'm not sure if you can plug the component cable set that comes with it into the back and use the optical jack alongside an HDMI cable or not. Anybody know for sure?

Just an update for anyone else wondering this same thing; it looks like you can pass audio over the Toslink connector regardless of the video input. I have one of the new 360 arcade systems with HDMI, and it does have an optical output; it may just be the newer models that have the optical out. Right now I have it using the component cables for the video and the toslink optical to my external receiver for the audio. Hurray!
I should get my HDMI cable in the mail tomorrow. I'll update if it does anything weird when I try to do HDMI for video and toslink for audio.
Just as a side question, has anyone had much experience with audio quality of optical vs. RCA? One of the biggest advantages of optical that I've read is the elimination of a lot of nasty interference effects. I've put my PS2 back on RCA and so far haven't noticed any quality loss.

Ah, slight correction:
The optical out was on the *Cable*, not the console itself.
I'm *still* waiting for my HDMI cable, but in the meantime, I picked one up at the mart of Wal. My TV has an optical out, so I'm able to carry the audio from the... HDMI to the TV, then from the TV back to my receiver, then out of the speakers connected to the receiver.
It's sounding pretty dog-gone good on Lost Odyssey. Have any 360 users noticed a quality decline using a similar setup?

Huh what? No. Sounds like you were hornswoggled by an electronic superstore clerk.
A CRT can operate interlaced or non-interlaced (progressive scan). Most CRT computer monitors are non-interlaced.
Anyway, sorry to veer off topic, and congrats to the new 360 owners
Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crud.
Another question for any 360 owners: The ring of light on my controller likes to spin round n' round, perpetually blinking the green lights (blinking 1 & 4, then 2 & 3, then repeat, etc.) Is this normal, or is it likely that my controller is having trouble 'talking' to my system? I've not had any trouble with it disconnecting/losing button presses, so maybe it's just perpetually scanning for new controllers.

I find that when mine does that, it's time to put in new batteries. The dashboard may tell you that the batteries still have two or three bars, but it's not true. After awhile of doing that blinking thing, then your controller will disconnect from the 360, which is awesome when playing a multiplayer FPS.
