So I picked up a pretty good acoustic guitar and I am pretty dedicated to get myself learning how to play it. Now I don't plan to take any classes but I have been looking up some resources online.

Do any of you guys play the guitar? Do you know where I can get a great tutorial or lesson from the interwebs or DVD?

I play, but I wouldn't trust the web to teach me this particular skill. Look around your area to see if there's someone available to AT LEAST get you through the first baby steps. There are however hundreds of sites where you can learn the chords, some are better than others and there might be some lessons online in youtube, basic stuff made by enthusiasts I guess, never looked for that but if there are tuts outthere on how to fry an egg with an Xbox360 you're pretty much bound to find something half-useful while digging. Only site I can recommend is http://www.8notes.com/. There you can tune up your guitar and find any chord out there, It seems to have more material but that's the only use I have given it so far. Good luck Tempest, may your path out of GuitarHero pretend-ish fantasy be a smooth one ; )

I found an old thread for ya: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/27373

My advice then and my advice now: learn chords, learn basic strumming patterns, learn songs you like, keep yourself entertained.

This started me off. It's pretty good, and I still refer back to it when I need a reminder on some things.

I play. I took lessons for a bit when I was just starting out (easier than self motivation at least in my case). Anyway I used to just pick one song I liked and then learn that. You can find lots of guitar tabs online that show the fingering for what you need to play. A good song to start with is probably Bob Marley - Redemption song if you like that one.

I'll chime in in favor of taking a few lessons to get you started. Just having someone help you with the fundamentals of posture and hand and wrist position is priceless.

I mean, you can learn that stuff through trial and error and watching instructional videos, but it may or not happen before you give yourself carpal tunnel syndrome.

Well, since we're using this thread anyway instead of the other one...

I really recommend Marty Friedman's "Electric guitar - Day One" DVD if you're learning 'lectric guitar. It walks you through the most basic steps that are equivalent to a couple of lessons on your own, and more. Also has many details that aren't usually mentioned on lessons, such as changing strings. It goes through to basic barre chords and power chords and so on.

I really wish I had it when I started. It's great for all the basics. If anything, I'd just ignore the advice about "Playing with your guitar low, not like the beatles", until you're more experienced

Also, I saw a bit of Berklee's Guitar Method, and it looks pretty good, but REALLY long. It's way more serious, it seems. I'll see if I can borrow it and give a better review. =)

Thanks for all the advice. I feel like I am making progress on my own but I also feel like I can learn a lot more faster if I get someone to help me. So I am probably going to take some classes at least to learn some chords.

I also found this great program that uses my mic to tune my guitar. I play the string, it picks it up on the mic and tells me the frequency of the sound. Then I tighten or loosen it accordingly.
