Wake-up light

So I finally got one of those Philips wake-up light lamps yesterday, having queued for one for some three weeks. They've been sold out in the whole country for around two months now after being advertised very heavily before Christmas. I was skeptical, but had heard good things, so my store account took the 150 euro hit and home we went.

I cannot believe the difference it makes. I'm just writing this to push anyone considering one to make the leap.

The difference between being woken up by the shock of an alarm clock is violence compared to waking up when your brain is ready for it. After four pints and barely six hours of sleep last night, I awoke feeling refreshed and not at all gruggy. My wife is a terrible morning person, and she had no trouble waking up.

Absolutely worth the price. I expect to enjoy sleep a lot more from now on. Also, we plunked down the extra fifty euro for the FM radio model, but I don't see myself actually using the radio anymore - waking up to slowly increasing birdsong (or ocean waves, or crickets) is much more preferable.

The device's idea is so simple, I find it hard to understand why nobody thought of this a long time ago.

Whoa, I've been very interested in these sort of devices because I have SAD. The amount of sunlight when I wake up affects my entire day, which makes winter, by far, the worst time of the year. Actually I've been looking into special SAD lamps...

Thank you for the write-up, I'll be googling these now.

Yeah, I guess the wavelength or whatever of the light does matter... the Philips devices use 100W 400 LUX (iirc) lamps, said to be very close to actual sunlight, telling the brain to shutting down sleep mode and waking up. It's surprising, really - the light isn't that bright per se, it just feels... right.

It appears the Philips wake-up light is not sold in America. I guess I am gonna look for another brand...

Or buy it here.

Ah, I imagined they would be available in North America. Sorry about that. Amazon UK seems to carry them though (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000VI7K2C/ref=nosim/6688506-rg...) and probably any product with comparable specs would do just as well.

Does not ship to America from either Germany or UK. Other brands, here I come.

Here's a supposedly premium one ?

Hmm... That sucker's expensive...

I think I've seen other "dawn lamps" on the market in the US. Have to take a look around.

I've been considering getting one for a while, but have to wait until I move...not sure if I'll be Stateside or overseas (the 110 vs. 220 volt conundrum). Thanks for the post (and gentle push into purchasing).

I have wanted one of these for a while, but the ones I have ever tried have annoying features like the alarm going off at the beginning of the light cycle, or obnoxious noises in the natural noises. (Like whale sounds in the middle of my calm ocean.) If I could make my own, that would be fantastic. Unfortunately, I dont have that kind of knowledge or materials.

Interesting, might have to give one a try. Check here for a brand in the states.

Ye gods, that Philips one looks like it belongs on a ships mast. What does the alarm sound like, a fog horn?

Does this have any use if you already get up after sunrise? I am one of those ridiculous people who can't get out of bed without snoozing an alarm for an hour or more, which cuts into my sleep badly. I could really use something like this, though it sounds like I might have to get up even earlier for it work!

I would love to get one of these. Problem is that I get up 2 hours before my wife I don't think she would like being woken. The difference in light is the primary reason I like summer over winter. Waking up at 6am is fine when it is light outside.

I cannot see this helping my morning routine any. I'm a stickler for old habits, so I feel that any deviation from my regular routine of yelling and swearing to be unconstitutional.

Definitely awesome for those people who can use it (or those of you who are, you know, normal ), but considering when I'm home my wife can vacuum in the middle of the afternoon, in full sunlight, in the bedroom without waking me I really don't think it'd work for me.

I have been saving up for one of these and am almost ready to buy. I have a terrible time waking up in the morning and both me and my hubby have become snooze button abusers. The one I am leaning toward at this point is this: http://www.verilux.com/light-therapy-lamps/rise-shine-therapyI am actually really excited to order one in hopes that I can actually get up more than a half an hour before I have to leave for work one of these days!!

I wake up two minutes before my alarm. If I don't, I have to roll my ass out of bed and turn it off. Once I do, I throw the curtains open and stare at the sun for a bit. This light thing makes total sense, with that in mind.

If anyone picks one up in North America, let us know how it goes!

Guess I'm the lone voice of dissent here. My girlfriend has one of these jobbies (not the exact model as discussed above, but same deal) and I can't stand it. After years of conditioning, I'm perfectly accustomed to waking up in the dark. I get completely thrown when I wake up to find the room all bright, and wind up yanking the covers over my head and burying myself in darkness so that I can adjust for several minutes. Which sometimes leads to me falling back to sleep. It's a usual point of argument whenever I sleep at her place.

Maybe I'm unusual, but part of the enjoyment of morning for me is that it's subdued, calm, and dark. Taking away the dark just messes with my head.

Mornings aren't meant to be enjoyable. They're like commercials at a movie; they're the crap you have to wade through to get to the fun times.

Tell someone you love them, because life is short. But holler it at them in German, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Can anyone who actually uses one of these tell me something: does it make a difference throughout the whole day, or just make it easier to wake up? I'm usually pretty awake whenever I finish my shower. What I need is something that takes the edge off that lingering need to nap. Maybe I just need a more interesting job.
