Titan Quest (catch-all?) - now $19.95 on Steam

I know I'm incredibly late to the party to be talking about it now, but I've been playing through Titan Quest on-and-off and having an absolute blast with it. I bought it on Steam several months ago and saw today that they've lowered the price for the Gold Edition to $19.95. If you haven't bought it yet, you now have now excuse.

By the way, if there's already a catch-all for Titan Quest and Immortal Throne, please lock this thread up and point me in the right direction - I just couldn't find one.

How much is this game like Diablo 2 ? Namely, does it come with a semblance of Battle.Net, or allow you to play through the main campaign in its entirety cooperatively ? The description page was vague on that aspect.

You can play through the entire game in co-op.

The rest of the game itself is essentially Diablo 2 all over again with prettier graphics. The only lacking area is the story. That is definitely not up to Diablo standards. That said, the game is really entertaining. I spent quite a lot of time playing it when it came out.

If all you're after is a lot of clicky-click and lots of loot from evil creatures you've slain... it should be right up your alley

Ugh. I just bought Titan Quest and the expansion at a retail store for what I thought was a great deal at $40 combined about a month ago. Steam has foiled me again!

Looking forward to playing it though. Pretty much everyone who has the same taste as me say that while it's just a Diablo clone, it's the best Diablo clone ever made. In other words, it "gets" what made that game so good.

That is a great deal and definitely worth $20. I got it last year and got my money's worth at $40, considering how much I played it. kuddles is right, Titan Quest got the whole D2 thing right. It completely hooked me. Whereas Dungeon Siege left me a hollow, empty shell, wondering why I wasted the money. The clicky-click in that game just didn't do it for me.

I enjoyed Titan Quest but the overall amount of loot that drops is just mind boggling. If I picked everything up I'd be running back with a full inventory in like 3 minutes

Its a great D2 update graphically but I found the loot drops TERRIBLE in multiplay coop. Ran the whole 1st Act with five others and nothing of interest was collected in those hours invested. The rewards were so slight for the effort involved that we just gave up after that and never bothered to finish.

It's nearing time for me to retry this one. Immortal Throne completely broke the game for me (severe rubberbanding, rampant freezing, and random CTD's), which is odd considering the original was one of the most stable games I ever ran on my pc. Every few months or so I try the game again to see if they either patched it (they haven't, and I doubt they ever will at this point) or if the latest driver/system updates have magically stabilized the game for me.

While the overarching story itself is fairly standard fare, there are some real gems of content in the townsfolk you talk to. I've always had a fascination with Greek mythology, and there are a bunch of characters, especially in the expansion, that will retell many of the tales - both popular and lesser-known... not to mention all the fun little references sprinkled throughout the main and side quests.

I don't think there's any gems there if you don't already have a fascination with Greek mythology

I definitely did still enjoy the game though, as I said. I played for well over 40 hours, and then another 20ish when the expansion came out.

Anyone know if this is a limited time sale?

I doubt it is, because usually they make it clear it's a sale, with the normal price crossed out in dramatic fashion.

I've finished the regular campaign once but still need to get the expansion campaign done. I haven't found a better co-op multilayer game in the past couple of years. It's funny that you guys say the story is worse than Diablo because from my limited experience with that game series I never realized there was a story.

I picked it up when the price went down for some good hack n slash action rpg time-sinking. You know, something to play when no one is on Jake's Lounge or I don't feel like diving into the Witcher. It has been perfect for that. Now that y'all have mentioned co-op multiplayer I'm intrigued. I tried to get Fripper into a game this afternoon, but aparently his clients come before his gaming.

If anyone is interested in some coop, look me up on the Steam Goodger community.

Wow. Saying a game's story isn't up to Diablo standards is kind of like saying a game isn't quite as well-lit as Doom 3.

Indeed... Diablo'2 story was really about the nice cutscenes between different acts. Then, each area had some pretty inane quests, but it all came together in gameplay and presentation.

Well.. it's true. Titan Quest has none of the personality or "soul" if you will that Diablo 2 had.

The game is fun, but it tends to feel sterile to me where Diablo feels like there's really some effort invested into the characters. Actually encountering Tyreal in Diablo 2 was actually a good game moment for me. I never had one of those in Titan Quest.

It definitely solves some of the Diablo problems...using potions directly from inventory with one key, different loot highlight keys to filter out various loot types, a better respawn system, and so forth.

I'll echo the "no soul" comments. It was definitely fun to play through, but it didn't hook me the way Diablo did. And the skills you pick up in the trees don't have the same flair.

Still, well worth 20 dollars for a playthrough, particularly co-op.

The game itself is certainly well worth the $20 but the expansion adds a lot of enjoyment to the game both with the features and content. I would highly recommend picking up both if you can swing it.

While I never played the original by itself, I can't imagine the game without the caravan, which was added in the expansion. I believe there were some other key features added to it, as well, that make it very worth the price. And, so far, the expansion is very well done.

I let the original game update itself shortly after IT came out, and it did the same thing to me: I couldn't play it for all the transition times, freezing, and framerate drops. I've since re-installed the original without updates, and it runs just fine; I'm not sure I want to get the expansion though, if that is what I face ahead.

I would be up for co-op if anyone's interested.

The game was solid before the expansion but I have to admit that it was the Immortal Throne that really made the game for me and helped it reach Diablo 2 status (for me). The caravan, the adjusted loot drops, the relic crafting, scrolls, the dream skill set, and the content from the expansion area (15-20 hours for me?). I'm now towards the end of Epic with a solo char and will start up on Legendary sometime soon. I wouldn't want to play it without the expansion now as it's an entirely different game with it.

In all fairness, I haven't had a single problem like Farscry has described (we've discussed the issue at length) but I'm running it on a fairly beefy machine. When I ran it on my three year old PC upon it's initial release (sans expansion) I did have to run it at the bare minimum options for performance. It still looked fantastic though.

I decided to start playing this game again since I've never been through the campaign (and after watching the Diablo 3 videos) and now I'm addicted. I've been switching between 3 characters (Melee (lvl 19), Ranged (lvl 29), and Caster (lvl 27)) and messing around with different masteries. I find the game to be much more fun in MP although hacked characters seem to be the norm. Also, it seems that loot doesn't have that much value since it can easily be duped. I thought that would be annoying but it seems that people are more willing to give you items that complement your build.

If anybody is interested in some co-op, let me know what times are good and I'll set up a password protected session. I still have Act IV to do but I'm willing to go through the other Acts again.
