A Song of Fire and Ice prints

As I was once again pretending to work today, and attempting to find the release date for 'A Dance with Dragons', I happened upon these wonderful little fellows;
In The Quiet of the Godswood...
and
The Snow Fell and the Castle Rose
I figured it was the sort of thing a self-respecting goodjer should have adorning the walls. So I promptly ordered both. Enjoy!

Knowledge of the books makes both those images a lot more depressing than they're probably intended to be.
Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.
Still haven't finished these books... I liked the first one, but the second one felt like a very long interlude. The third one seemed interesting in the beginning, but I put it down for some reason about a year ago and haven't picked it up again. I'm afraid that I've gone too long and may need to start the series over so as not to be totally lost.

You... put down the third one? You did yourself a tremendous disservice, my friend. You may be able to get away with restarting the third book, if you want to save yourself the "trouble" of re-reading the series. But by all means, give it a shot!

Those prints are beautiful. I hope that artist does more of them. Simply stunning. I can't wait for the damned 5th book. Now that football is over maybe GRRM will get back into actually writing and finishing it.

See, I'm afraid of doing the third book a disservice by not starting over. I'm not sure it would be "trouble" per se, but they aren't exactly fast reads.

I confess to a feeling of shame for still not having read these books. The prints look awesome, though.
P.s. "Ned Stark reflecting upon his actions"... What kind of actions were those? Just wondering.

Geez, those are impressive.
Rock Band Name Generator!... too funny to merely be coincidence.

Me neither. I'm half-way through the first book for the third time and having trouble getting through it. Everyone raves about it but it just doesn't seem to click with me.

What everyone raves about is the turn the books take at the end of the first one. Keep going.

In the first print is that supposed to be Ice? I had pictured it.. differently. Something like this that is rectangular and boxy and only sharp on one side. Maybe I need to go back and read the description in the first book again.
If you can get through it, there's a definite payoff. Things start moving very fast as you get towards the end and I remember finishing the first book, closing it, and thinking "holy sh*t". I'm about halfway through the second one and it's been slow, but based on the first book I'm thinking things will pick up pretty soon.

All right, I'll keep slogging....

Your library may have the audio books, they are available on Audible as well. If you like listening, the reading is done by the actor who play the Beast in Martin's TV series Beauty and the Beast. I've found them to be a good listen when commuting to work or doing dishes around the house, plus this makes it easier to set aside time for the huge amount of story. I just don't have the time to set aside for that much reading, and I'm a librarian!
We all know that there is no quicker way to empty a joke of its peculiar magic than to try to explain it -- to point out, for example, that Lou Costello is mistaking the proper name "Who" for the interrogative pronoun "who," etc. - D.F.Wallace
Ron Perlman? That's just convinced me to find the audio version.
...
Just checked, it's narrated by Ray Dotrice who was the father of the Beast.
Worst signature ever.

Amazing images. These guys should work with GRRM to put out illustrated versions of the books.

I just Wish George Rail Roat Martin would get off his ass and finish the damn book already. Chop Chop! I loved the series, and I NEED MORE NOW DAMNIT!

Whoops, good catch, sorry for the misinfo. Still, they are well worth listening to in their own right. Feast for Crows was narrated by someone else due to a scheduling conflict, and while he's not quite up to Dotrice's high standard of excellent, he isn't awful, except for the prologue chapter, so don't let that one set the tone.

No doubt. I've been telling friends to not even bother with A Feast For Crows until the next one comes out. Which should be in Summer of 2006. Err... 07. No wait, 08.

So maybe by the end of the year. If you are tired of waiting, he does have a new preview chapter up on his site. This one checks in w/ Jon Snow.

Is there an announced number of books? I've been taking my time with this series because I don't want to end up in the same boat I've been in with other long series where I keep rereading each earlier book in the series before a new title comes out.

That's nothing to be ashamed of, I understand that it's a common problem for lots of guys.
As much as I love the series, I worry that this is going to follow the path of the Wheel of Time. Start out with a bang, then just kind of meander along filling in all the little political details until the author passes away or is unable to write any more.

I've never used Audible nor bought audio books before. I will give the sample a listen.

Because they have thousands of slavering fans, damn it! When fantasy authors set out to write any book series of greater than three books, they should sit down and answer some simple questions once they've outlined their next title.
1. Are no new world-changing events occurring?
2. Are none of my major characters dying or having their lives significantly altered?
3. Does this book fail to include chapters pertaining to the lives of any major characters?
#3 is the big danger sign. When you're so interested in EXPLAINING stuff rather than making new stuff happen that you find you don't have space to talk about half of the main characters, that's a problem. And there's nothing worse than having a book where something truly amazing happens at the climax, and then the next book completely ignores it because the author wants to go back and fill you in on the irrelevant stuff that was going on while the heroes were altering the face of the globe. Relative importance is king. If I just learned that the Xelnath Death Battle Fleet has arrived in Earthspace and is bent on the destruction of mankind, I really don't want to open the next book and read 20 chapters about Bob having trouble with his income taxes.

Well I think all of the Books in this series are badass. I can not wait for the next one! I might even pick them up again and read em, but then I will do nothing else for the entire weekend while I consume them. The last one to come out i purchased it on a Tuesday afternoon after I got off work and I finished it at about 5-6am the next day.

I've listened to the first 4 books on my PSP. I found that it makes my ~1 hour commute to and from work much less stressful. Hell, the other day I was stuck in traffic because somebody wanted to test the tensile strength of the concrete barrier, and actually enjoyed it. I was happy to be able to listen to more of my book before I got home.
My car stereo hasn't been turned on in probably 2 years because of my audio book fetish.
Try it, you might like it
Cheers!

Sweet merciful crap, WHEN IS DANCE WITH DRAGONS COMING OUT?!?!
And for those of you having trouble with the series, I'll be honest, I struggled to get through about the first third (and even portions of the middle third) of the first book. So many people and places to keep straight, so few people that really interested me initially.
However, trust me, it does get good, and when it does, it gets really really good. Heck, If you're even just partially interested in the series, stick with it through the end of book three (Storm of Swords). If you can finish that and not be completely impatient to see how everything eventually wraps up, there's no need to keep reading.
I seriously go nuts when I think too much about the books, because I want to know what happens next, dammit!
And to add, when I re-read the first three books prior to reading A Feast for Crows, I found even the first book riveting, as I got so much more out of it than I did on the first read, so many important details and questions I didn't pick up on the first time through.
