Lost Odyssey: Catch All
Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 - 10:07am
Hi folks,
I didnt see any banter on the upcoming release of Lost Odyssey next week. I'm very curious about this one, because every retailer's description vaguely lists 'MMO elements' (though its not an online game) in the features list. I'll be honest, I'm always looking for that offline MMO feel. I love WoW for example, but my life schedule doesnt synch with being able to raid during healthy hours.
Does anyone know what MMO elements are included? I'm hoping that it refers to the ability to strategically pull and clear locations etc with your party, but it could be anything from crafting to who knows.
Is anyone planning on picking this one up?

1up discussed this some on their last podcast. They didn't mention any mmo elements. They did point out that the story could be described as a slow burn. The rest they seemed to repeat that it was like a classic JRPG.
I'll be picking it up though.

I have it on pre-order. Yay, for next week.
I'm not sure about MMO elements, from my understanding is that this is pretty much a standard turn-base JRPG, sort of like Final Fantasy series pre- XI.

I'll be getting this for sure. Not sure when I'll finish it, but I'll be getting it.
Every video and preview of this that I have seen points toward it being a very traditional JRPG.
There's a slew of video, etc on the interweb if you want to see the gameplay in action to get a better idea of what to expect.

I'd be interesting on hearing your impressions when you've played this. I'm considering getting it.

Even after more or less being burned by Blue Dragon, Sakaguchi's name still lends promise to this game in my mind. As such, I'll definitely be picking it up, even if what I've heard of the game so far has been rather luke warm.

Oh wow it comes out Feb 12th!
I rented Blue Dragon and it was completely boring. Even so, this is the game I've had my eyes on for a while. I'm definitely getting it.
BTW, if anyone is interested, there is a Bonus Item available when you reserve LO. I only reserve games if it comes with a free item so here you go:

If it's not a tangible item I still don't bother. Exclusive codes are quickly all over the Internet.

On the fence, awaiting reviews for Lost Odyssey.

Actually, when it is a code for XBLM DLC it is single use only. The Burnout Paradise codes worked for everyone because they just unlocked something that was already on the disc.
Hard to say which way it will be in this case, but more often than not over the past two years this sort of thing has been DLC.

Oh, good point. It does say the code is included with the game so you're probably right. It's the ones they email you that are generally just generic ones you enter to the game itself.

Great, I already have a backlog of greatness. One more to add to my Gamefly queue.

Gametrailers preview. It looks interesting, but I don't know if I can handle another Jrpg. The last one I really enjoyed was Chrono Cross. Comparatively, Lost Odyssey looks like your standard Jrpg.
Edit: Gametrailers review
D'oh!

I was going to link to the Gametrailers review. You beat me to it
They seem to like it.

Hm, it's tempting to watch the review, but I think I'll just play it and see for myself. RPGs are always best when you know as little as possible going in.

Agreed * 100, Zero.
I'll be picking it up. I am deciding if I want to beat Eternal Sonata and DMC4 before I start it, or just start it and get back to these other games.
Eternal Sonata is quick at 20 hours compared to this at 40 hours.

I'm getting it. I consider "classic JRPG" to be a feature, not a downside.
Edwin, who or what did you kick, kill, or kiss to get through Eternal Sonata in 20 hours!? I'm slower than I thought, I guess.

Ah. That makes sense. I thought for a second I was a lot lost-er than I thought.

Just saw the GameTrailers review... I'm getting this ON DAY ONE.

No kidding. Sometimes it irks me when reviews put "classic [insert genre here]" as a downside. It's not a downside necessarily, so reviews shouldn't automatically put that in the negative list. I'd consider it neutral; sometimes sticking to classic formulas is great if the presentation and experience is refined to reiterate classic gameplay with modern technology (see Dragon Quest 8), other times it can hold a game back because it's used as a crutch and there isn't enough of an advance in other aspects of the game to make it worth "replaying" classic gameplay.
Looks like I'll be getting this as well. I'm such a sucker for pretty JRPGs. Especially ones without too many spiky-haired youths.

I agree with ya. I'm picking this up day 1, I'll try to get through Eternal Sonata before hand, but I am really interested in the more epic feel of Lost Odyssey.
That Gametrailers.com review cost me $60. The game looks beautiful. 4 DVDs!
[Edit] Oh! The "keep it" price from Gamefly.com is $48. Guess I'll go that route.

The story is enough to influence a purchase. Dang it, I'm a sucker for a good story.
Watched Gametrailers review, I shall purchase.

Damn, that GameTrailers review just sold me.
You guys should really be watching the HD version, though.

Wow, is the review really that good? Everything I've heard so far makes this sound like a game that only a hardcore JRPG nut could love. Well, this certainly makes me feel better about having dropped $60 for the game yesterday.
