Your GWJ Name... Why?
Monday, February 4th, 2008 - 1:26pm
For those of you who use your actual name as a GWJ name ignore this thread.
The rest of you, please give me a brief explanation of what yours means.
I ask because I love word play and logic puzzles so I am curious about the creativity of others.
Let me start by explaining my own...
"Judge" comes from the German to English translation of my own name "Richter".
"Digger" is just adding vowels to my initials,"DGR", to make a word.
So what's your story?

I am the man called Mars. Mars is short for Marshall, which is my given first name. Everyone's been calling me Mars since my days in college.
BHA: Lyonroar, Mundor, Slycke
Mine comes from my younger days of play D&D. My brother was DM running some quests in the Dark Sun realm (I can't remember if that is the actual name. It was a desert realm, metals were very rare, etc...) Anyways, I made a character that was a Thrikeen (A large bug, Praying mantis like.) So I couldn't think of a name for him, so I started looking through the books and found the name Tk'kyl. I used it for my character's name and its kind of stuck since them. However its gone through a couple changes. In most game, you aren't allowed to have an apostrophe in your name. So I had to srop that. And then, Tkkyl looks kind of silly to me, so I shortened it to Tkyl. So thats the history beind my name.

My nick comes from when I started playing Dark Age of Camelot. I was looking for a name that seemed fairly unique, something I could use in forums as well that wasn't always going to be already chosen, I was playing a big Rock Troll or whatever that race was and thought what about Gaald. Stuck with it ever since.

Dabbling in most F2P MMO's as Veloreyn.
You can find the story of many long standing goodjers' names in this thread, if you are interested.

I was given the nickname Mr. De Vil when I worked at a recording studio a while ago, registered on a bunch of forums and Myspace with the name so I stuck with it.
The 909 came about when I tried to register on a forum that already had a MrDeVil, thought of 666, seemed too obvious and wannabee, 999 didn't seem right and then I hit on 909. So I became Mr.DeVil_909 and I've used some variant since. Plus the Roland TR_909 is a classic analogue drum machine, so it seemed apt.

My nick comes from using AOL in 1993. I had to have a username so that I could have my own IM account. My real name, Elliott, had already been taken. I was 9 years old at the time and was a freak of nature with math so I was already doing some rudimentary pre-algebra. I figured I wanted to add just one other letter/number to my name as Elliott was already a pretty unique entity in my opinion. I went with X as it stood for variable, treasure...etc. And I just felt it was cool.
I've kept it for the rest of my life because nobody ever takes it. I never have to worry about remembering my username to a site/game.
The only annoying thing is that some people read it as ElliotTX, and they assume I'm from Texas.

My WoW name was Grendwar. I didn't want to steal directly from some book characters, so I kinda mashed them together and switched some letters and settled on Grendwar. As I made friends and guildmates they would only type and say (via Vent) Grend, Gren, or Grenny. I joined GWJ for the WoW community, so I figured that my name would be close to what it was online, but I didn't like Grendwar that much anymore so I settled on a shortened version of it. The "d" in Grend is obnoxious, and Grenny makes me sound like a girl, so Grenn it is. The extra "n" is a typo I didn't fix.
EDIT* That's a lot of text for something so inconsequential(sp?)

My name's kind of has a weird back story. I used to use more generic nicknames cause I was on the net before a lot of people were and was getting sick of them always being in use. One night in high school, a bunch of night owl friends and I were walking around bored and one of my more interesting friends decided it would be fun to try an invent a religion from scratch (yes, we did things like this sometimes.) I honestly don't remember what we came up with but we named this "religion" Parallax Abstraction. Parallax tends to mean something "multi-planed" and something that's abstract means that everyone sees something different. I started using that as my name just because it sounded cool and it's something that's never in use.

I've been called a "codger" since college. Probably had something to do with the pipe, cigars, bourbon, vocabulary, politics, etc.
Straight up "Codger" makes for a dull name (and frequently taken), so I adjusted. . .

Hey, I know a guy from Texas. Do you know Jim? Crazy sumbitch from Austin or Dallas or something, I forget his last name. He was in my dorm my freshman year and left after the first semester following a particularly disturbing foreign object insertion gone awry. What a card that Jim!

Pretty simple, I've had this name since oh I don't know 9 years ago when I got started in MMO's and such. It simply means "Jewel of the Gods" everything else is the legend you see before you today. Or something like that >_>.

Draco was the first legislator in ancient Greece and wrote the first Athenian constitution and written criminal code. The penalties he assesed for crimes were so harsh (you were executed for most everything), it led to the rise of the English word, "Draconian."
I'm a prosecutor so... it seemed approiate. I've been using that (or some form of Draco) as my screen name online since 1996.... then Harry Potter has to come out and everyone thinks I'm copying that emo "Draco Malfoy."

I picked up mine from the Heinlein novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress; it's an acronym for "There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch".
I've been using it as a on-line name since 1977 (no, that date is not a typo). It's always my first choice for user name but sometimes it's taken. Here it wasn't.
