3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the book, author, and next three sentences.

The C++ Programming Language, Special Edition by Bjarne Stroustrup.

It is worth noting that the following does not work the way a mathematician might expect:
if (0 <= x <= 99) // ...
This is legal, but is interpreted as (0<=x) <=99, where the result of the first comparison is either true or false.

Not exactly exciting, but it was the nearest book.

Eminent Victorian Soldiers: Seekers of Glory by Byron Farwell.

Quote:
He was on his way back to Khartoum by way of Saukin when he received a curious message from the Khedive, who asked for his help on a serious and immediate problem. It had occurred to the Khedive, always plagued by debts, that the man who seemed to be so successful in sorting out the tangled intrigues in the Sudan might also be able to sort out his tangled financial affairs. Would Gordon come to Cairo and settle his British and French creditors as he had settled the slavers, rebels and wild chiefs of the Sudan?

This section of the book is about Charles "Chinese" Gordon who was famously portrayed by Charlton Heston in the 1966 film Khartoum. Gordon died defending the Sudan at Khartoum some years after the incident that is quoted happens. Anyway, to explain a bit: Egypt was in heavy dept to the major European powers, and the entire affair was quite punitive (imagine being conquered by another country, have them build railroads and other infrastructure with their own companies running and profiting these constructions, then force you to pay the immense building costs). At this point, Egypt was paying off the annual seven percent interest on their dept with five sixths of their tax revenue, all while being unable to reduce the principle even the slightest bit.

And if you wonder about that last question in the quoted section: no. Gordon was not politically astute, and managed to distance himself from the British powers in Cairo. He met with no success until he decided to leave and try something else.

The narrator notes that as a result of this law "there was no lack of 'sour cream' in Chelm, but some housewives complained there was a lack of 'water.' But this was an entirely new problem, to be solved after the holiday."

The whimsy of this story comes from our knowledge that people understand reality independently of the words used to describe it.

Pilots are cautioned not to chase the needle when flight through turbulent conditions produces erratic needle movements.
