Devil May Cry 4: Catch All

I didn't see one of these and I think it was about time to start one. Forgive me if my 3 page dive didn't turn this up already.

Lets go over what we know from the Demo.

The game looks very good, the detail makes me very very excited about RE5 thats for sure.

Everything that is DMC is back including the cheesy pseudo-anime emo-ness and "Over the top cool" factor.

The control scheme(360 version) is comfortable, unlike all of the previous DMC games this didn't make the joints in my hands cry after a few hours of playing.(Now this statement could be retracted as the demo is like 20 minutes long and not a great judge of comfort.)

Where did the demo fail to deliver? Well thats simple....where is all the cool S#!T?! We were given maybe 3 moves to play with and that simply isn't enough. It would have been better if it was just a 3 room demo with all the powers in the game and wave after wave of enemies.

That being said it doesn't make me less interested in the game but a little disappointed in the offering of a "sneak peek" that Capcom gave us.

Some of the things I'm looking forward to is the new combos that you can possibly come up with. The devil hand adds a whole new element of "Grapple n' smash" action. As I was telling Souldaddy when he was watching me play it, I feel like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat as I bat monsters away only to grab them and pull em close only to do the same thing again. It seems that the grapple feature defies gravity as well as you can pick up a monster from the ground while jumping beat the crap outta him let him fall and grab another while losing very little altitude in the process. As we all know Aerial combos are the best thing since...well air.

This is Souldaddy's "Assassin creed" as he called it as I'll be buying the game and he'll borrow it from me as he doesn't think he would ever buy this game much like I'll never buy Assassin's Creed.

The demo was on the slow side really but they still gave you some cool stuff, gave you a decent idea of just how the devil bringer can change the combo system (for the better imo) and otherwise assured me at the very least that this is a good continuation of the series.

I'm planning on buying it as long as the money's there for it.

It should be, but lots of things seem to want a grab at my wallet lately and none of them are fun.

Is there anyone that has tried the PS3 version and can weigh in on the control layout? Is it better now or is it still crippling?

I played the PS3 demo, although not all the way through. The controls feel like the PS2 version... maybe with a bit more control over the camera.

The fighting controls seem about the same.

All I want to know is this; is there a block button? That was the main mental roadblock I had with Devil May Cry 3. I couldn't get past the first level. Does that mean I suck? Maybe. All I know is the block button helps.

I can't remember ever using a block button in a DMC game. It's mostly about evasion then it is about blocking.

Interesting. From OXM:

Devil May Cry 4 - 7.5/11

+ Fast, meaty, satisfying fighting action, particularly against the tougher bosses.
+ Beautiful graphics with a level of detail that's still rare.
- Backtracking through the entire game? Thanks but no thanks.
? Why the archaic switch puzzles?

- meanwhile, from UK OXM:

Devil May Cry 4 - 9/10
+ Cool as hell
+ Satisfying gameplay
+ Stunning visuals
- A few camera issues
- j-metel
- Identical looking heroes

I love the US backtracking issue. It's a Capcom game and they are known for backtracking.

J-metal...hmm thats almost always been around and was very noticeable in DMC3.

I played a bit from the beginning of the retail version tonight, on the PS3. Seems extremely solid, but this we know from the demo. Gotta be surprised about the low OXM score, though - thus far this feels like the winner we were expecting. We'll see how it develops over time.

I hope there isn't a meter on the absolute amount of cool which when breached, will end the universe. Capcom is veering dangerously close to that limit.

I tried the demo, it was pretty much what I expected. Not that it's a bad thing, but it was a solid action experience. I won't get this new (I'm not a huge fan of the series) but I'll definitely grab this on the cheap during a dry spell.

I just read that the PS3 version goes through a 22-25 minute install process when you first start. Supposedly that content installation results in SNES-like loading times during gameplay.

I wonder if the 360 version will have something similar? Probably not, as that would require all users to have a hard drive.

In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx

Not necessarily. Developers are allowed to make use of the hard drive for precaching so long as the game also functions without it.

This isn't pre-caching. As far as I know they are installing 5+ GB of data onto the hard drive hence the 25 minute install time. They might as well just let you download the game if they aren't even going to use the disc.

True, I've never heard of a 360 game taking that long to go through the initial load, but I'm not sure where the cutoff is on how much hard drive space they can use is exactly. Also, when does your PS3 decide that something should be uninstalled? Does the user do this manually?

I thought it was a long isntall time, even by PS3 standards, but sheesh. Couldn't it do some of that in the background or something?

Correct, no to a block button and as of right now Burnout requires the HDD to play the online mode making it the first game to require a HDD in the 360 library for full functionality.

Screw the 360 Arcade owners and lets get more HDD required games!!! =0

Actually, Crackdown also required an hard drive to play online, and Final Fantasy XI required one to play at all.

I'm right there with you on the "screw the arcade owners" front, though.

I rented the PS3 version today. Could have gone 360, but I think it controls better with the PS3 controller and aside from the initial install, it's very snappy and looks great with no graphics tearing. Only an hour in so far, but I'm enjoying myself! The cutscenes are cheesy fun and the fighting engine feels very smooth. The game knows better than to throw my balls in a vice within the first hour though, we'll see how it holds up.

Yeah, it's scary. I'm staring into the abyss right now, and it's staring into me, which I think is kind of a dick move on the abyss's part. - Nyles

I can't wait to pick this up, I think I am going tomorrow to bestbuy and buying this because here in canada, they have both Turok and Devil May Cry for 89.99 for both 360 and PS3, I probably will go PS3 mainly because my 360 just RROD again, but It looks amazing and I can't wait to play it.
