Should I feel honored, or insulted?

I made a game called "Prison Bitch". I told a guy from Gametap about said game, much at the behest of Sephirotic, during an interview about the AAU. Apparently the dude liked the game.

Or did he? I don't know-- while it's pretty cool to have my name and my game prominently mentioned (twice!) in an article, I feel sort of... insulted. Maybe by the way he worded it:

Quote:
Some recent projects by students at the Academy of Art University include traditional paintings, bronze sculptures, and award-winning photography collages. Senior David Mann's recent work, meanwhile, includes a card game by the name of Prison Bitch.

Or maybe by the fact that he didn't mention the other work that I showed him, of which I'm rather proud.

This isn't to say that I never thought I was going to receive some sort of flak for making a game about escaping Bobo's hard lovin', nor am I ashamed of making this game (and I plan on publishing it in the near future) but I guess I don't want to be thought of as a GTA kind of game maker right out of the gates. I mean, I want to make games that are the polar opposite (content-wise) of a Grand Theft Auto game-- I'm not about shock value... I want my games to have engaging stories, fun gameplay, intriguing puzzles... I want to be one of the developers that pushes games as an artistic medium in league with literature and film.

All in all, I kind of just wish that he had mentioned my other work (as well as Stephen Ytuarte's) more so. I sort of have this fear of being recognized as that guy that made a prison sex game.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: "I can do other stuff too, y'know!"

Looking over the article, it seems the author used Prison Bitch mostly as a hook, using it to catch the reader's attention and interest with an extreme example. It probably means your game was one of the most memorable things the writer had in connection with AAU. Besides, you didn't quote "...it's hard to deny that Prison Bitch sounds like a good time." which is pretty unambiguously positive.

And, you have your first marketable quote when you publish the game:

Every journalist has a sort of filter. You take your notes, your recordings, and everything you can manage to remember to the keyboard. A story becomes a kind of alphabet soup where you have to write with impact and clarity to keep the reader interested but you also have to be very short. I think the fact that you were mentioned twice tends to signify that your card game (Can't wait to see it.) occupied a good portion of his mind.

Remember Dante's Inferno? There are three heads of the devil, and one of them is your editor. If anything was lost out of the story it was probably on that end not at the behest of the journalist. Besides if you're a journalist working on a pay rate of per-word then you tend to pack as many of them into a great story as you can hoping it'll be good enough to merit a little extra space.

I think you lucked out. Besides any press is good press.

Eh, that's what you get for calling your game Prison Bitch. I feel the guy's comment is pretty light and humorous and if you didn't want anyone to make even the subtlest commentary on this, then, well, you should've given it a less juvenile name.

You can't be too surprised when the attention-grabbing stuff grabs all the attention, can you?

It doesn't sound like you're famous, so you should be glad of any publicity you can get. Complaining about news coverage is something you do after you're famous.

I think for someone who named his game "Prison Bitch", you're being sorta over-sensitive. I mean, this press is fantastic. The reporter was overwhelmingly positive in how he described your game, and he even seemed to be in on the joke. But you're stuck on a humorously-worded hook. Just know that most reviewers aren't so kind.

Also: If you didn't want to be known as "the guy who made the prison sex game", you probably shouldn't have made a game about prison sex. I have little sympathy for you there.

The question is: How long until your game is talked about on FOX News (Can't say that last word with a straight face) as a card game that allows the player to play as a hardened criminal cornholing everyone in the prison. EVEN GUARDS!!! The cards themselves depict the most graphic representation yet devised of the most horrendous sex acts imaginable! The next President of the United States should ban all card games because they are corrupting the youth. And that David Mann should drink some hemlock already!

(I know that's not all from the FOX News (*giggle*) story)

Thanks guys-- I think I was just reading into the first part of the article too much ( I do that sometimes... ) I don't know, sort of a mix of excitement and... embarrassment, I guess (What if my mom finds out?!).

I definitely think its cool that I was mentioned and kind of praised for the game, but to be honest, Kaos isn't too far off from my thought process. Just replace Fox News with other conservative people (most that I know personally) and that scenario would play out about the same. Like I said, I over-think things a lot, probably because I have an over-active imagination. Just call me Ralphie.

Really my first post was more of a rant on my initial thoughts on the article. Katerin (and everyone else, for that matter) is pretty spot on-- I don't really deserve sympathy for making a game about being someone's prison bitch then complaining when I gain some form of notariety for it...

As for the game itself, I'll keep you guys posted on it's progress. I wanted to add a couple more gameplay elements, and I'm figuring out my options for publishing it (I'm thinking along the lines of Cheap-Ass Games), along with some of the drawings for the cards-- although nothing too graphic.

Oh well, back to work...

I wouldn't worry about it. Anyone who would look at you askance for using Prison Bitch as a creative scenario probably isn't going to be hiring in a field that skews heavily to adolescent boys and the men they become.

My question is why isn't your model of Walter Sobcheck your avatar on the forum?
