Steamworks: Valve drops a bomb
Gaming blogs have it all over the web now( Rock Paper Shotgun &
Next Generation) but I didn't see it posted here.
Valve has released *free* its set of steam tools to developers, allowing them to use the same tools Valve does for automatic updates, DRM, region control, and digital distribution. I usually don't talk about these sorts of concepts with complementary language, but Valve does it well and has released their tools for free and they aren't even tied to using Steam.
My favorite bit of this is that it allows developers to use Valve's servers to authenticate products, meaning we can buy SKUs in stores, take them home and authenticate and then not need the CD any more. Helps stop piracy AND makes my life more convenient. Two great tastes that taste great together.
I guess this makes me an unabashed Valve fanboy now. I don't think I'm an uncritical fan, but damn, this is impressive.

This is really nice. Valve does everything very intelligently and their products are always top notch. Steam is definitely the wave of the future in gaming and maybe all media in general.
It certainly is the best way to fight PC piracy.
Thanks for standin' still Wanker!

I'd think it's safe to say that this will become the digital distribution industry standard in short order.
Hopefully that means people will be replacing the horrendous GameSpy software with Steam Community!

Wow that is pretty cool! I like the who steam idea of registering games then being able to ditch the CD. Or hell if i could get 1meg down if I purchased a new game I would not even mind just getting the manual in the box with a CD key..

I never minded piracy. Anyone who minds about piracy is full of sh*t. Anyone who pirates your game wasn't going to buy it anyway! -Warren Spector
Well, as I said in my thread I made 30 seconds after yours, this makes me very happy. I really hope publishers jump on this.
After all the huge piracy issues, the bad news about PC game sales, and many PC-centric developers saying they couldn't be anymore, I was feeling really down about my favourite platform. But if publishers do take advantage of having all the Xbox-live community features that Valve games always do, I'll be so excited. Imagine starting up Steam and having access to all your games, and knowing who on your friend list is playing any multiplayer game, not just TF2.

I'm critical of Valve when they mess up, but this is a good move. Steam used to be an atrocity, but not anymore. It keeps getting better and better, and I wouldn't mind getting all my games via Steam. Now someone needs to put pressure on the developers to use smaller boxes and reduce waste, or better yet, eliminate boxes altogether.

Of course, the days of well-made and entertaining manuals seems to be over.
Sorry but I agree with Nyles. I hate, hate, hate that stuff and always have. I actually remember getting that box and manual when I bought Fallout. Like all boxes and manuals, it was in the trash bin the very same day. Digital distribution can't come soon enough for me.

Bah, kids these days! You are the reason we can't have LP album art anymore either!
Oh yeah, get off my yard!!!

What's an "LP"?

Wow, how far has the community's view of Steam come since the early days? I was one of those lucky folks that never had any troubles with Steam, so I've loved it from day 1. Valve seems to have the nice ability to look forward, to see what might be coming down the road, both for business and games. Now, if only they could get rid of their load times....

Yeah, I didn't have problems w/ Steam either, but i remember making the conscious decision to buy HL2 on disk because I didn't trust it. Their internal QA is very high, as is their commitment to testing and fixing issues. The load times don't really bother me that much, especially since the DRM on my copy of the Witcher fails one out of every 3 times I fire it up, and I've got the bloody original DVD in my drive.

I hated Steam originally. The idea of needing an external client to run ONE company's games never sat well with me. It was easy to imagine every PC publisher doing this, and having a system tray filled with unnecessary yet RAM-gobbling clients.
Luckily, everyone else was slow on the uptake, and Valve transformed Steam from a boat anchor into a distribution platform for many games outside of their own. Then Steam Community rolled out. Big win.
It still has problems; I wish I could consolidate one of my old accounts' games into my current account! But instead of getting a ton of 3rd rate boat anchors, we got one that developed into the standard for digital distribution.

Can you gift a game from your old account to your new account? I'm not sure how the gifting process actually works, I'm just thinking out loud.

Unfortunately, no.
Gifting only applies to brand-new purchases.

It's very weird to get excited about free DRM. But I suppose we're cheering on the rapid adoption of the lesser of many evils.
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
Thats nice indeed.
For "Games for Windows", if MS was smart, they would just make a deal with Valve at this point, to smash in a Windows Logo somewhere and call it a day I guess.
Now gamers of all kinds can know the joy of a 6:00 p.m. auto-update!

hehe, Well I'm sure this is some way of transfering your games from one account to the next. My biggest fear is getting a mistake and called a cheater by vat and having my account banned :\ But it has not happen yet and I have had steam running from the very begining.. but I did buy HL2 on cd.. but for the life of me I can not find the CD anymore
As far as cheering a type of DRM I think this system is more than just DRM. It's a WIN/WIN for both sides. Publishers can prevent pirating (well easy pirating) and the customers get all sorts of features and the registration process is seamless and easy. Also if you lose your media you can always download it (if the publish go with the way valve does things.
I do kinda wish that friend intergration like burnout city (or whatever its called) happened to steam. Where you could invite people and then they would just be there. I wonder steam will allow people to join 3rd party games ala Xfire?

I'll echo the wierdness, but I AM getting excited about it. I guess I'm just going to fall short of Stallman's standards. I'm OK with not being able to share what I own. What Steam does is make it *more* convenient for me to use their product rather than less. Being able to access my library from any computer is a plus. Perhaps it is too easy a compromise, but I'm willing to give up the right of first sale for that.

I'd care more about the DRM if PC games has a resell value worth a crap. As it stands, it simply makes holding onto to games I own far more easy.

Screw that gimme my huge manuals and fictional story supplements (i.e Starsiege and Tribes). I'm getting light on bathroom reading material. I don't see the reason for a box and what not if you are just putting a 2 page manual and a disc inside. But for the very few that want to give you the full tilt I welcome big boxes and full size 100 page manuals.
I'm lookin at you Fallout 3!!!

MS not only dropped the ball, they threw it out the window. I doubt they will ever get any real handhold after what Valve just pulled. Really, the only competitor I'd figure that is worth anything is Gamespy, who has been doing this for a long time and remains pretty well established. I'd like to see how they respond, if at all.

But Gamespy crap is always half baked and poorly implemented. I think Valve will steamroll them
