PS3 en route, what now?

I just ordered a PS3 from Amazon to get a Blu Ray player. So... What else can I do with this thing? How do I get into the PS3 GWJ clan? Do we have to exchange PGP keys and simultaneously enter a 12 button sequence on the controllers?

What games are worthwhile? Anyone playing Eye of Judgment?

I've got Eye of Judgement but haven't really played it more than once or twice.

Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Uncharted and Motostorm are all worth a rental. Heavenly Sword, on the other hand, is not. I understand that Lair isn't either but I haven't actually played it so I can't comment on that one.

Excluding all 360 cross-platform games:
* Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
* Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
* Warhawk
* Unreal Tournament 3 (not yet on 360, worthwhile if you lack a powerful PC)
* Heavenly Sword (forget Al, it was a fun rental game)

... that's about it for retail games.

On PlayStation Network:
* Everyday Shooter
* Calling All Cars
* Super Stardust HD

It's pretty slim right now, but 2008 looks fantastic.

I have eye of judgement and it's a pretty good game. But the setup requirements are a bit ridiculous. So I don't really play it all that much. I recommend you play:

Stardust HD
Uncharted
Heavenly Sword
Ratchet
Resistance
Motorstorm

The one game that really hasn't received great reviews that I might recommend picking up especially since you can get it for around $20 used is Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom. Not a great game by any stretch of the imagination but a fun little coop game when you want to play with another person.

I can vouch for that. I made it about 30 minutes into Lair before my disgust with nearly every aspect of the game's design convinced me to pack it back up and send it right back to Gamefly.

I will buy eye of judgement if someone else will.

The gauntlet is thrown.

Honestly, all I've really played was Uncharted (good, but I gave it to a friend after about 6 hours), calling all cars, everyday shooter, pain, and motorstorm. I can recommend them all for what they are.

Killer DVD player though. I also use it as my music and movie front end to my server now. Works a treat.

I'll echo many of the recommendations here. Ratchet, Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden were all solid rentals for me. I consider Lair to be an insult to gamers.

I own and have played Eye of Judgement. I agree with Stric9 that it's kind of a pain to set up and get into a game, but it is quite fun if you're into the card/strategy genre. I'm still working through the holiday game glut as well, so I've just not gotten back to it.

If you like multiplayer I'd suggest trying/renting Warhawk and UT3 and seeing which one scratches your itch. Both are solid fun games.

I've not found anything on PSN to wow me yet. The lack of a demo option for many games is a big factor there.

Put on your fire retardant flame suit and get ready for a verbal lashing from the haters (or even better, the inevitable "meh" posts)

Other than that:

- Buy Motorstorm, Ratchet, and Uncharted
- Buy Calling all Cars, Super Stardust HD, fl0w
- Create a PSN account and add us to your friend's list
- Share your media with Windows Media Player 11 and then scan for media servers on your PS3.
- If you have a PSP, turn your PS3 into a router for remote viewing (and eventually playing). Access all your stuff anywhere your PSP can get a WiFi connection.
- Download and try a bunch of demos
- Set up the PS2 Emulation options and test out old PS2 games
- Contemplate how quiet it is compared to the Jet Engine 360
- Don't forget to charge your Sixaxis
- Folding@Home
- Download a bunch of HD movie and game trailers, including Little Big Planet

There would be a lot more to play if you didn't already have the games on your 360, at least that's my situation. But there is a few gems that have been mentioned, which are absolutely kick ass. And I hear Folklore is a damn good RPG as well so I might check that out.

Oh, and wait for MGS, LBP and FF

PS3 games I can honestly recommend, including some multiplatforms I don't have for the 360:

- Ratchet & Clank
- Uncharted (this is the one I'd urge you to pick up, although you'll complete it in 1-2 sessions)
- Sega Rally
- Heavenly Sword (yeah, it wasn't all that, but a great, shallow ride it is)
- Burnout Paradise
- Warhawk

I wasn't at all impressed with Motorstorm or Resistance.

I've been meaning to get back to this and I believe that I eventually will. It is flawed, but the collection mechanic is neat. Of all things, the camera almost manages to spoil the otherwise fun combat. Unique setting, awkward but gripping storytelling. If you're into RPGs and Pokémon, probably a sound choice.

Ignore me at your peril! Granted, the crazy sister's parts were all good but the stupid hat throwing "puzzles", poorly designed boss battles and combat that left me wishing that I had re-rented God of War instead are what really ruined the game for me.

Lots of input.

Oh yeah! I had forgotten about Everyday Shooter after thinking it was cool then finding out it went PS3 exclusive.

Definitely interested in LBP. That was one of the major factors making up the $150 difference between a BD-ROM for my HTPC and the PS3.

I think I can get my brother (Slytin) to pickup EoJ too, so that'd be another player. Now that I have the Triforce of consoles it really makes sense to get a Gamefly subscription but I'm assuming EoJ isn't up for rental. Nope, just checked. Guess I'll sign up with them though to check out some of the other suggestions.

It is if you're a geek with many consoles, like most of us. But cmon, it isn't that bad if it's your only console, there's a decent amount of 3rd party titles for it. My brother in law, who's a bit more casual has a whole bunch of game he enjoys. I'm 360 first all the way, but he is by no means twiddling his thumbs waiting for something to drop.

Mine's basically been a blu-ray player and a Folding@home machine. There was a short detour for Uncharted (which is awesome by the way) but otherwise... it's a movie player.

I do have Motorstorm from Gamefly at the moment but I don't think that's going to last long. I normally love racing games of all kinds but this one is really rubbing me the wrong way so far. Not sure what it is but it's just not fun so far.

It is good for movies but I sure do wish it had an actual freakin remote. My 360 came with one.

I haven't bothered to play with any of the media functions. My computer is hooked up to my TV and my surround sound stuff so there's really no advantage to playing my music or video files through it.

I use the media stuff a ton. I bought the Ir remote from newegg and now just use my universal remote for it. The music and movie interface is easier than my htpc setup is so the tv is only ever tuned to the of to play some old divx stuff. I wish icouod use folding as the visualizer for playlists over the network.

Didn't we have this conversation a month ago when I bought EoJ? How many people do you need to jump on the bandwagon? Silly bunny.

We should set up some EoJ tournament or something.

I have found that the media streaming via my Mac does not work as well as to the 360. I'm wondering if it's because I kept the PS3 wireless while the Xbox is wired to the airport basestation... can anyone else who has tried the NullRiver Media Link software on a Mac comment? I'd rather stream to the PS3 because it's quiet.

Haven't tried it yet, but I'll give it a shot and report back.

Uh, scratch that. I didn't realize the PS3 streaming is handled by a separate pref pane, and I don't want to spend another $20 just so the black sheep of my entertainment center feels included.

The wireless connection might be causing an issue, but I doubt it. Maybe MediaLink isn't as rock solid as Connect360? I don't see how, nor do I understand why two DLNA servers are required. But I'm not a programmer, just an armchair critic.

Okay, let's get back to picking games out for Mantis to spend money on and setting up an EoJ tournament.

After my first week with the PS3 I can safely say it's a solid platform. A very rock-solid single-player* platform. After my two+ years with the 360 I've become so accustomed to the Live features as to take it for granted. The PS3 presents a much more PC-esque offering, with disparate islands of multiplayer rather than a key integrated feature. Obviously this has been a known thing for a long time and subject to much discussion but the theory didn't strike home near as much as the sharply defined implementation of practice has. Currently my brother and I have been firing up the 360, getting on chat, then connecting on Eye of Judgment for some multiplayer gaming. Hopefully he's getting a headset for the PS3 soon though and I partnered my Bluetooth earpiece so soon we can give that more of a shakedown. The fact that a cheap headset wasn't tossed in the box bespeaks a lot of the intended direction however.

As another facet of the same issue, I still get confused when I can't pull up the dashboard while in a game. Playing Eye of Judgment has made me lust for custom soundtracks to forever silence the antithematic metal score. I'm going to be forced to mute the in-game music and use the dual-source features of my receiver, something I haven't done since the days of my Dreamcast.

The hardware is sleek, and blessedly quiet. I do like slot-feed devices although there's a required trick of getting the disc out without fingerprinting it due to the underlying ledge from the PS3's Death Star gunner helmet shape.

I've played about two or three hours of Ratchet and Clank so far and it's an awesome game. It gives me high hopes for future exclusives but with the social aspect, achievements, and superior controller the 360 will be my primary console for any cross platform releases.

Yeah, the silence is really something you notice if you've become accustomed to the insane noise of the 360. And gotta love the slot-loader. (Especially since I've had a 360 drive tray break on me, and the current one doesn't seem too stabile either.)

That said, I do prefer to play on the 360. I just miss Live and, yes, Achievements, whenever I'm not on it.

After Ratcher & Clank, you do need Uncharted. It's great fun.

Yup, I think that sentiment ripples through our community. It's a different feeling booting up the PS3 and not having something as good as Live. Even if I'm playing single player or watching a movie, popping up my friend's list to see what everyone's up to gives me warm fuzzies.

I went to go get Rock Star for the 360 yesterday. None in stock, but they had a massive stack of Rock Star for the PS3 lined up on the floor in an impressive cube. I just couldn't bring myself to get it on the PS3. I'll wait.
