80gb PS3 going bye-bye?

So with Best Buy closing out on them and not getting any more in, could this mean Sony is discontinuing it? Maybe because of the new white PS3 that is supposedly going to be released? Hopefully that one will have full BC, otherwise, I wash my hands of Sony unless I can find a 60gb sometime in the future.

And here I thought they had already discontinued the 80GB. Don't count on backwards compatability dhelor, Sony has decided "the fans don't really want it so we cut it to cut costs", even though everyone knows that's nothing but bad rationalizing.

I don't see them reversing that decision any time soon.

I know there are too many 360 SKUs, but the PS3 is in the same boat. I thought the 80 gig was the standard, and the 40 was discontinued, and the white one was going 180, and there was a 60..

I heard the next version of the PS3 will have a 90GB HDD, a built in Betamax player and will feature backwards compatibility, but only for those titles starting with the letters B,L, or Y. This will be complimented by the "Premium Gold" version that plays titles starting with M through S, but not B or L. Titles starting with Y will still be supported with a separate USB attachment.

Don't give them any funny ideas!

However one thing they did get right. When you buy a 360 core you are buying a "crippled xbox" you still have to buy a hard drive if you want to play certain 360, and all xbox games. The cheaper unit that sony sells is the full deal, with the exception of backwards compatibility but to me thats hardly a complaint. Of course with the price difference between the systems you could buy a ps2.

I remember it very well, I want to tattoo it on Phil Harrison's face these days.

Now I know why my Best Buy is sold out of 80gb PS3s...and here I was finally thinking about getting one.

bleh.. multiple sku's are a bad idea.. no matter how you try and spin it. It's stupid.. inane.. confuses the consumer and neither Microsoft or Sony should do it next generation.

The Arcade(previously the Core), now comes with a memory card doesnt it? If you are not into movie/video downloads, how is it crippled? They added the memory card to the bundle. How exactly did Sony get it 'right' by removing components over the four different hardware featuresets during their first year (60gb, 20gb, 60gb cost reduced, 80gb cost reduced), ultimately resulting in the 40gig.

I guess it's all perspective and preferences. I would've thought the 40gb ps3 would be more accurately described as 'crippled' as it doesnt measure up to the capabilities as the PS3 was originally designed, whereas the 360 arcade is still exactly representative of what the product was designed to be.

Eh, don't bother -- you'll want one of the 60 GB models anyway.

Do those still exist? I thought they stopped producing them months ago.

One little wrinkle is that I have a bunch of money in the form of BB gift cards, so I'm loathe to buy anywhere else...

Ah, I see. Well, I'm sure there are still 60 GB units out there to buy, but if your options are limited as to where to buy from that might be a bit of an issue I suppose.

That I can agree on 100%. If they want to go that route again they just need to start releasing PC games and get it over with.

As we have come to find out during the PS3 "experience", Sony makes no f*cking sense.

Screw releasing PC games. What they need to do if they want to insist on multiple SKU's is just admit they want to get into the PC gaming machine market and call it a day. What else can you call the 360 and PS3 but gaming PC's with dedicated OS's and controllers?

Apparently, some "insider" is saying that they're bumping the 80gb PS3 to either a 120gb or 160gb version, the hard drive size being the only potential difference between the two other than the replacement of the Sixaxis controller with the DualShock 3 controller. Price will supposedly stay the same.
