I don't see a release date, but GSC & Steam have announced that Clear Sky will be out on Steam. I hope this means it will be out this year on Steam, because maybe even more than Left 4 Dead, Alan Wake, or Spore, this is the game I'm waiting for in 2008.

Riffing on the "Portal is the Toyota Corolla of games" conversation from the podcast, for me, STALKER is the mid-70s Camaro of games. You know, the car you buy in High School that you can't quite afford, uses too much gas, takes too much time to maintain, never quite is reliable enough, but gawd-dammit is sooooo much fun you positively enjoy putting up with all that unnecessary shyte and love the experience. (Maybe even a little *because* you have to put up with so much.)

Anyway, RPS has a report on this. Apparently GSC split from THQ and were spared that company's recent blood-letting. This is good news for me, but perhaps old news to others.

Have we got a release date yet? Amazon.co.uk says April 1, 2008 and Steam says May 2008, but I want it now!

I'm looking forward to this, but the whole "super advanced AI that launches raids on each other and has their own agendas..." Call me jaded, but I have a feeling that's going to end up gimped in the final release, just as it had to be for Oblivion. Otherwise, the player shows up one day and realizes that one of the factions has taken over and slaughtered everyone else, or the player comes upon camp after camp of dead bodies, and that's when the game "feels broken" even though it was doing exactly what it claimed. I'm guessing camps will spawn groups, send them toward another camp and they will duke it out. Then a few minutes later everyone will spawn in again and the process will begin anew until the player can come along and trigger events that permanently change the balance one way or the other.

Regardless, someone tell me when this has gone gold!

Looks like August, but if the original is any model, I'd advise against holding your breath.

It does look like August. According to Kotaku, the publisher is based in Basingstoke, half an hour up the road. Maybe I can get in on the play-testing.
