I just recently got into the game (Yeah I know, I'm a little late to the bus) but anyone else still play?
I play on http://alt.org/nethack/ Where you can watch other peoples games and it's quite fun.
I'm not really a girl. I just play one in video games.

Nethack is without a doubt the most complex game EVER. Slash'em doesn't help matters any... but it's awesomely fun.
Has anyone here ascended.... ever? 10 years, and nothing. My Vampire Rogue just got completely owned by an Arch-Lich in Gehennom. Depressing. Oh well.

I ascended, but I cheated by backing up my save games and consulted spoiler FAQs heavily.

There are people who don't even save, much less savescum. And there are some people who have ascended while never having hit a monster.
I gather one of the keys to playing at that level is to think about every single step you take. There's no time limit, so you can ponder and contemplate as long as you like. But there are so many things that can go wrong, so many instant ways to die, that it still amazes me that people can win that game without backing up their save points.

Blessed scroll of genocide -> L . Makes life much easier later in the game. That was actually how I got closest to ascending, before my Valkyrie got completely pwned by a MASSIVE swarm of undead on lvl 1. How they got there, I'll never know.
It's actually one of the most fun games I have ever played. It does take a bit to learn, but it's pretty intuitive. Well worth the effort.

Oh, something that may help... find a unicorn horn, and stick to it, and enchant it up. When you apply it, it's got a chance of curing whatever ails you. Lock yourself in a room in town, and go to town quaffing potions, with your trusty unicorn horn, you ID a lot of potions, and come out no worse for it. Comes in handy when you need a !oCCW and you know which one it is.

My only problem with a wizard is finding enough food early game. This last game I was running today did great, I had charm monster as a starting spell and was kicking ass. Then I ran out of food, got stunned and a unicorn messed up my face.
I did get a ring of slow digestion once when starting as a wizard and what do you know, there was more food than I could fathom to eat all over the place in that game. So many corpses I had to pass up that I wanted to eat.

Wizards are definitely tough in the early game, but once you've hit about the halfway mark, you're essentially death, destroyer of worlds. Personally, I prefer all of the hard stuff to be in the beginning anyway, since I'd rather not play for eight hours, only to be killed by a mind flayer.
Ugh. I did really well last night too. Got to a score of about 13000 when my best previously was about 5000. Had a ring of slow digestion which makes early wizard life amazing.

So I was getting tired of pubbing on TF2 last night so I fired up a game of SLASH'EM on this server. I started out as a neutral elf fire mage and things seem to be going great so far. I began with a couple scrolls of remove curse, and I ran across two bones files early with some decent armor (including a cloak of displacement). There was a co-aligned temple in minetown so I've been making a bunch of holy water and sacrifices (no artifacts yet). I also found a magic lamp in minetown, so I might wish for some dragon scale mail soon. My hellhound pup is still alive and I haven't pissed off the guards yet. Once I get my AC down a little more I'll be heading do the end of the mines to get some gems. The game is going so well, I just know I am going to die soon. I've never ascended a fire or ice mage so I am not getting my hopes up.
Has anyone else played any nethack or slashem lately?

Yep, ran a few games on my lappy when I was moving. I'm mainly trying to beat the Quest on Vampire Slayer in slashem. It's a _sea_ of undead, and I dunno how you're supposed to beat it.

I don't remember the specifics of how I dealt with the undead. I probably just Turned a bunch of them and blew up the rest with wands and whatnot. Undead usually aren't that much trouble.

It's not the undead, it's the demons. I really think the undead slayer should be able to use silver sabres.

Current project: an experimental writing thing called Thereamid. The jackalope wants to save you from the faeries who will eat your face off!
Yeah you might want to give Valkyrie or Barbarian a try. They tend to live longer in the early game.
