Jan 21 - Jan 25

For our many friends in the Southeast, I hesitate to use the word drought to describe the gaming landscape of late, so let's call it instead a parched wasteland of endless nothingness. But, there is an oasis or two on the horizon as some refreshing games trickle from the dusty water spout of gaming's industrial water treatment facility ...

I think maybe that metaphor is played out, so let's move on before I break into a chorus of Itsy Bitsy Spider. Probably, considering the Game of the Week, there should have been some sort of racing and crashing analogy anyway. That game, of course, is Burnout Paradise, which earns some love on the back of a fun demo with strong multiplayer potential. Sort of a Grand Theft Burnout hybrid between classic Burnout racing, and more importantly crashing, and an open environment with emergent gameplay opportunities in a living city, sadly without any apparent prostitution or gun trafficking. Also of note, however, is Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin on the DS and No More Heroes on the Wii.

On DVD this week, you can smell the stink of what the Rock is cooking with The Game Plan, watch elaborate metal things kill people with Saw IV, or catch up on occasionally homoerotic sci-fi with Torchwood Season 1. More here.

Endless Ocean intrigues me.
I'll be getting Burnout Paradise.
I can't play Adv Wars: Days of Ruin till I've beaten Adv Wars: DS, which I can't play till I've finished the last level of GBA AdvWars 2.

Gamerankings has No More Heroes listed at 94% right now, but with only two site scores having been reported.

I don't really care though. I liked Killer7 enough that I'm picking up No More Heroes regardless.

I gave up when I found out that the A button swings the sword.

When will we have a real, one-to-one, sword swinging game? My excitement around this game revolved around that entire idea.

That was the most evil level ever! I bought Rebelstar Tactical Command for a week-long trip to California, and decided I wouldn't play it until I beat AW2. I finished the second to last level on the plane ride, and decided that a walk-through was the only way to finish the game after spending forever trying to get it right. AW:DS is pretty good, I would suggest you do yourself the favor of giving up quickly on the last level of the GBA version and move along. I'll look for Friend Codes when I finally get around to buying the new AW.

I don't mind if A swings the sword, because I still can't make small motions with the Wii. I've given people really nasty bruises in Wii Tennis because I switch up for backhand. If No More Heroes is as good as Killer 7, that's enough for me. I didn't mind Killer 7's flaws. Also, has everyone already heard about Suda's first two games being ported to the DS? That's exciting news!

Burnout all the way. I was a big fan of Burnout 2 & 3, but haven't been terribly excited about the series ever since. This one is looking like a hit, however.

I'm looking forward to hearing how the Wii titles are, but only out of curiosity as I don't still don't one.

Good time too, I think they released a patch that now has a 2D selection screen for vehicles with should greatly cut down on loading time!

Yes. It's been so long that I can hardly remember any of the story. I really should just move on.

Does anyone else find that statement disturbing given that the PS3 is a "next-gen" console?

I don't know I mean it could turn out really good, I think it's gonna be a love hate thing with the game, that being said I look forward to trying it especially after reading more about it.

Edit: I also look forward to seeing how Burnout Paradise turned out, it looks fantastic but the Demo was meh

I still have alot of faith in the game though.

The same goes for me, except there is AW 1 to be finished first. After almost finishing DS version I decided it is necessary to finish the two GBA iterations first. Damn completist me.

It is not like the remote does nothing the way it is held dictates your stance and it is used for finishing/wrestling moves. Looks like smart use to me.

I think MotorStorm is the only launch game that did not pre-install anything on the HD. Which explains the painful loading times. However, I have to give a credit to the Devs for at least trying to fix that. Now, if only they would enable custom soundtrack...!
