There was an interview about Turok on this week's Major Nelson podcast. Kimono Dragons and Insectasoids aside... sounds pretty weak. It sounds like they're making a generic FPS but shoehorning a lot of conventions in there... alternate fire modes for each weapon, "stealth" aspects, multiple approaches to the same situation... Remember, this is the same team that thought having an achievement for teamkilling would be a good idea.

The only cool part is that during multiplayer there will be NPC dinosaurs that will attack anything and will respond to noises and light and stuff, so you can lure them toward your enemy.

I tried the PS3 demo and was unimpressed.

Shoot dinosaurs in a cave then go outside and shoot dinosaurs in a jungle. It also doesn't look like the graphics have improved much since the N64 version.

There's nothing wrong with having a generic first person shooter if it does everything right. Look at Uncharted. A generic third person shooter that does nothing new, but does everything right.

With that said, I still don't have much faith in this new Turok.

I forgot how foggy the original was. But still, dinosaurs. So, I liked it ... for awhile.

Fixed. I think Turok 2's pea-soup fog was actually a lot more oppressive than the first game's, and the other sequel or two certainly didn't fix that.

Turok Rage Wars was pretty fun for multiplayer mayhem though.

I think I liked Turok 1 more than the other games in the series, though the first two were both decent for their time.

Man, that screenshot stirs up some serious nostalgia. Ah, the countless hours of shooting dudes in the head with arrows, then using a grenade launcher to bounce their corpses through the level while marveling at the amazing technology that was able to produce such realistic parabolas of blood as the corpse flew through the air.

Preach it, brother. Man, those were good times.

Seriously, is that a screenshot from the PS3 version?

The first two Turok games may not have aged well, but I thought they were freakin' incredible back when they were new. I mean hell, Cerebral Bore?

Hi-O!

I'm sure I'm in the minority. But I remember playing Turok 1 at launch and then GoldenEye months later when it launched. I always thought Turok was simply a better game. Definitely more gorgeous.

Well, I played Turok 2 on N64 and even with the RAM expansion pack (remember that?) it was still a pathetic slideshow at times. It was definately a downfall of what was otherwise an outstanding game.

I remember quite well - that was pretty much the last time I let myself get really hyped about a game based on screenshots. For a N64 game it did look great, but yeah the framerate was all over the place. I guess it's a credit to the game that it was still fairly enjoyable even when it was giving you a headache. I haven't touched a Turok game since.

Consider yourself lucky.

I've yet to play a Turok game that has even come close to the quaility of the first two.

Anywho, I'm real curious to hear how Turok 360 turns out. It seems like the initial buzz was real popular a few months back, but people have cooled on it after playing the demo. Hopefully, it's a case of having a poor demo for an otherwise great game (like Burnout Paradise).

Based on reviews... that might not be the case.

-edit-

I might have to take that back. OXM gave it 7/10 and Play gave it 9/10.

Of all reviewers Gametrailers had the most good will with me; but the demo, their review, and the immense ammount of coverage on their site smells funny.

Demo was pretty "meh". Great idea showing off the Unreal III Engine in a dark cave with no illumination. It was so dark it took a while just to figure out where the path was and I could swear the dinosaurs were infinitely spawning at a certain point when I kept crossing a trigger point.

This demo makes the Jericho demo look like something out of the Orange Box. All I could think while playing was, "At least Daikatana had some imagination."

I really don't like bashing games. I've worked on bad games. I know there were many talented people working on this game. But man, I was almost offended somebody thought so little of me that they'd expect me to enjoy that.

I almost want to download it again, just because I have a hard time believing it was as bad as I thought it was. Surely I must have missed something. Maybe the game was just being ironic?

I don't see how you came to that conclusion. The Jericho demo was horrendous. It was almost unplayable.

I will admit, the cave was boring but the rest of the demo was quite enjoyable in my opinion. The game controls fine, it looks fine, and the level design was decent. I'm not saying it's the greatest demo ever, it's just not Jericho terrible.
