I tried it out yesterday. The Dark Eldar are the only new race to be included in the demo. Here are my initial thoughts:
It definitely is more Dawn of War; which is a good thing in my book. The Dark Eldar are an interesting race to play as. All their units have high damage dealing capabilities and can move rapidly, but are extremely fragile. Their base infantry unit is meele only (Mandrakes I believe), but has a damage output higher than Space Marines.
The new resource for them, soul essence, seems like a half baked idea at this time. When I initially read about it I thought that the Dark Eldar would need to go on the offensive, kill the enemies, and then harvest the souls. The need to go out and attack the enemy would help offset the balance of having the option of activating special abilities (that do not require a specific unit in the area to use) that can wreck havoc. Instead, the Dark Eldar can upgrade existing buildings to produce dead bodies and harvest the souls from them. This means that the Dark Eldar can simply hang back in their base and collect soul essence to charge up their abilities. How effective these abilities are compared to other races has yet to be seen.
Two things that really stood out like a sore thumb for me was the new intro video and the voice acting. The intro video felt weak and lacked the intensity that the other two have had. The voice acting for the Dark Eldar feels flat and corny compared to the other races. I heard the new Space Marine captain's voice and was not impressed (granted, I was not impressed with the Dark Crusade version either).
Sadly, you can very much tell that this game was made by a different developer. Some of that awesome, intense atmosphere that Relic created seems to have diminished. I am possibly being a bit overly sensitive here, so take all of this with a grain of salt as I am a huge fan boy of the series.
Bottom line: It is more Dawn of War which is a good thing. Day one purchase for me regardless of what I have said here.

Huh. That was interesting... when it was Undead in Warcraft III.
I can't help but feel like the game is getting so unwieldly they feel the need to differentiate sides through unique resources. Since they're kind of shoehorning each in for a specific side they feel a little shallow.
Maybe in 5 more expansions every time you kill a target they'll spew out a soul, a few pieces of armor, a fountain of blood, a brain, their leftover ammo, and a sammich.

As a reminder, Dawn of War: Soulstorm will be released next week (3/4/08).
Here are some of the features of the final expansion,
- Two new factions, The Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar
- Air unit for each of the factions
- A meta-map conquest mode will be featured for single player, but will take place in a star system(of 4 planets and a moon) rather than one planet.
Like Dark Crusade, Soulstorm will be a standalone product, but owning the previous expansions will unlock the other races to be used in multiplayer.
Iron Lore will be closing down shop after Soulstorm. It seems that they couldn't secure enough funding for their next project, so they decided to close down.
Besides Soulstorm, Iron Lore also developed Titan Quest and its expansion Immortal Throne. Both awesome games in their own genre.
I wish the employees best of luck on their future endeavors.
Why, oh why, is this not yet available over Steam?
Assuming I am allowed to purchase this game someday, is anyone interested in playing it online?
I haven't played DOW multiplayer since the first game came out, and I'd love to play on a regular night with some goodjers.

Yeah, I'm downloading it now. Anyone want to get together over Steam tomorrow night and try to set up a game? I'm at http://steamcommunity.com/id/KingMob13.
Tonight is going to be too late for me by the time this has finished downloading, so let me know tomorrow if you want to play.

I actually decided to skip it when I found out they added air units. I really enjoy the games, but that's one thing I was never sad they left out.
The lack of actual player controlled air units is one of my favorite things about Company of Heroes.
It's ok though. I fully expect a Dawn of War II announcement using the Company of Heroes engine someday, at which point I can get excited about a warhammer game again.

I'll buy it when I get home - does anyone know if the CD versions I own of the other three games will work with the STEAM version of Soulstorm or will I need to go buy the actual disc?

With the studio that made it out of business, this game won't be getting any tuning or balance adjustments
This is actually completely incorrect. Relic has already stated that they'll be handling balance adjustments and patching themselves. Iron Lore was only onboard for the development itself, not the post release support.
I got the previous three games in boxes. If I buy this one off Steam, do you think I'll run into compatibility issues related to the choice of race in multiplayer? For that matter, can I just transfer the old games into my Steam account and never worry about the discs ever again?

Keep in mind that steam won't add and store your old codes for your other Dawn of War expansions. I tried it with COH and it was a no go. There is only a list of around 15 games where they accept disc CD keys. Basically if you change computers you will only be able to download the expansions that you purchased off steam. Just a warning to not throw away those discs yet!

It will work but I ran into an issue last night after I bought Soulstorm on Steam and owning the CD versions of the previous games/expansions. I could use all races for local skirmish but when I went online only the 2 SS races were enabled. I found this tool on the Relic Forums. I entered my CD keys and voila I could use all the races. I believe it just updates a registry key that Soulstorm looks at at to make the races enabled.

That may be too much of a hassle - I will probably just pick up the CD version so I dont have any issues. I found that patches became problematic with having a CD version and a STEAM purchased game in the past as well.
