Why was UT3 a failure? (changed thread name)

Well I got this game because I always love the twitch shooters. UT2k4 was awesome and I actually really like UT3.
I wish they did not merge Assault, onslaught and bombing run but the Warfare mode is actually fun.
So I am wondering if you enjoyed UT2k4 or are interested in online shooters why haven't you bought this game yet?
I know it is between many other online shooters but at least it is very different from the rest.

For me, it's two primary reasons. Firstly, while I don't mind fast-paced shooters, UT speed is just too much for me now. It's so fast that it really feels less like the gameplay is less about skill and tactics and more about just random insanity. I can have much more fun with CoD4 or TF2. I also think Epic made a big mistake by putting out that "beta demo." It felt very much like a console port, the server browser was all but broken and its over-reliance on GameSpy was ridiculous. I've heard mixed reports of how that's improved in the retail release but I'm not prepared to spend $50 to find out. I might grab it when it's cheaper and the mods start coming out but I don't know how likely that is since no one is going to want to mod a game with no population.

Like Parallax, I'm satisfied with TF2 and CoD4 (when it works) for now. They would have been better served to wait past the Christmas rush and release in January/February when folks were ready for something new.
I'll wait for a price drop and/or some download content comes out from Epic.

Wow, Parrallax touched on all the points I had. Keep in mind I didn't buy UT2k3 or 2k4 either because of the speed thing. I preferred the original UT over Quake 2/3 multiplayer because of it.

I enjoyed UT2004, and even 2003 before that...I really have no compelling reason to buy it for the PC. There isn't a Linux installer, AFAIK, so I'm waiting for the 360 version.
And between Halo 3, Gears of War, CoD4, and TF2...GRAW 1 & 2, Ravenshield...I really have too many shooters as it is.
When the eventual UT3 360 port hits, I will be all over it, and it should hit at a point in time where there is a decent lull in my gaming, and I can devote my time to reaquiring the meager twitch skills I had.
I don't want it.

I found it boring just like UT2k3 and 2k4. The demo didn't help either.

I'm not that huge of a multiplayer fan to begin with, but with how multiplayer shooters have moved on, just the idea of going back to bunny hopping and shooting at things that blur into the overly detailed background because it might be an enemy just seems tired to me.

My 3 year old PC probably won't run it...

I played the demo, got frustrated by the whole gamespy thing, and was then completely unimpressed by the gameplay. I can handle the speed but frankly, the gameplay just felt boring. Between CoD4 and TF2, I get all the FPS multi that I want, and in a well-presented form. UT3 is just something that I've done years and years ago, but in a prettier form. Pass.

Mine would probably run it, but I'd need to dust off my sudoku book so I'd have something to do between frames.

I didn't care for the art style. One of the highlights of the Unreal series has always been the bright, vibrant colors. UT3 looked like someone dropped a nuke on UT2k4.

I totally understand that it came out the wrong time. But if a lot of people are tired and bored of that kind of fast paced shooter why do a lot people say "If it comes out on 360 I will get it". Is it because it might get released in a gaming drought? Or have all the PC gamers felt like "been there done that" and its a new experience for console gamers?

I suspect anyone saying they'd get it for the 360 are speaking to Xbox Live and maybe their computers are older. Mind you, no one here has said it so far so I'm not sure who "a lot of people" are

I do have the PS3 version in my rental queue just so I can try it out and see how it is. I think the game is doing better on PS3 than PC but I bet it isn't by much.

Yeah, and if I want a multiplayer experience, I guess I'd reinstall TF2... That runs quite well.

TF2 is plenty for me. I don't have that much time to play, anyway. My LotRO toons are stagnating as it is.

Because I'm all old now, I fell out of the modding community, and TF2 is more than enough for me. Super fast-paced shooters just aren't my thing now.
My PC could probably run it.. but why? I have TF2, I have BioShock, and I can even play Gears with Beers with the GWJ peoples. Not much need for UT3 in my life.

I have UT2k4 and i don't see how this game is enough of an improvement/difference over that to warrant me buying it. Plus, my internet connection is a bit crap at the moment (no stability) so no online gaming for me.
A blog: by me!
Epic has said that there will be a Linux version -- it was meant to be in the box, but got delayed due to some legal wrangling over middleware licences or something. I'll probably pick up the game when the Linux port hits, even if it's just to see what this 8800GT can really do without having to boot in to Windows.

Bought UT 2k4, have probably played less than 20 hours total. For me, that's pretty bad when it comes to online games. Seeing as how UT3 will most likely be similar to UT2k4, I can't justify buying a game that I'm fairly certain I won't play.

I got burned with UT2003, UT2004, being a clan co-founder, clan trainings, giant bedroom levels with tiny people instagibbing each other, people from our own clan "test" speed warping and aimbot cheats to "see if they work", walljumping and other "tricks" that require uber-keyboard-macros to be set up or incredible finger dexterity and timing, giant maps involving two teams running at one another with no obstacles inbetween and thus forcing a super-high display resolution my video card can never keep up with... yeah.
UT is for teenagers.
Shelter 1-minute atmospheric teaser.
UGH, did ANYONE like those levels? I hated them. It was a funny gimmick with the first few maps("ha ha, we are like rats!"), but after a while they were no fun at all.
It's like the map designer was just learning to use the software and they didn't have any imagination and just made a model out of their bathroom, or their desk, and no thought went into the design. For me, the worst type of maps.

A couple of years ago I probably would've been at it, but now, Call Of Duty 4 is all I want and have time for. If I ever get tired of that, I still haven't really played Halo 3 online, although I'd like to, so not really room for Unreal Tournament.

TF2 is just my speed, now that I'm an old geezer. COD4 is borderline too much. So just imagining Unreal Tournament gives me a headache.

Funnily enough before TF2 I saw UT2k4 as the go-to cartoony, tongue in cheek, ridiculously (and awesomely) over-the-top shooter, but Epic seems to have taken it in a completely different, gritty direction with UT3- or maybe that's what they were going for all along and didn't have the technology to get it accross in 2k3/4. Either way "gritty" is not how I like my multiplayer sci-fi team-shooters, and having played UT3 a good deal at a friends I concluded that it had lost a lot of its fun in the transition. Lucky break that TF2's here now

I got it for Christmas and have been picking away at the single player. I haven't felt the urge to even try the multiplayer.
I find that I can only take so much of it. I loved old UT, and like 2k3/4, and used to play them for hours at a time. I find that I can play only 1 or 2 matches at a time before I call it quit. It's fun, but not like it used to be.

For one, it will most likely be slower. For two, the dual analog control scheme very much changes how a fire fight plays out. Both skew the game away from the twitchy, and more towards the tactical end of the spectrum.

Not that I'd necessarily get it for the 360, but I think my days of playing any PC FPS online are over. I just really don't like the idea of not knowing if I was beaten by somebody who was better, or somebody who simply cheated.
