Carl Sagan's Cosmos on the Science Channel

Starting tonight at 9:00 PM EST, The Science Channel will be airing the first episode of the brilliant 1980 series, Cosmos, hosted and written by the late Carl Sagan. Each week will air the next episode in the 13-episode series.

I was only six when this was on TV, but I remember it dearly. It was the only show my parents let me stay up late for. In my opinion, there hasn't been a popularizer of science since Sagan that has come close to his proficiency with conveying complex concepts and principles to the general public. It was meaningful to adults and accessible to children in equal measure. He promoted critical thinking while increasing the audience's capacity for awe toward the universe he unfolded. I can't wait to see it again.

I'm going to check it out, but there are some incredible science shows on these days. The problem is, much has changed about what we know about the Cosmos in the last 28 years.

I LOVED this show as a kid, Sagan and James Burke were my nerdly heroes. I loved how Sagan would shoot around in his spaceship to demonstrate time effects. Great show. Hope it isn't too dated.

I remember watching this program in 7th grade science. I found it boring, but then, it didn't have any X-Wings and our science teacher was a letch. I'd be interested in checking it out again with a better understanding and more interested state of mind.

I've got the complete series on DVD. It's pretty amazing.

The set was released only a few years ago and there's a feature in it that subtitles new findings (in the last 20 years of science) that flows dynamically with the active topic being shown. Suprisingly there's VERY little ammended information and it speaks well of just how on the ball the team was that put the program together originally.

Also, when he's on his "imaginary spaceship" the low-tech special effects are a hoot. It make the original Star Trek episoldes look like current-gen masterpieces.

I am currently going through Connections 2 & 3 on my netflix queue. I think this will make a nice follow-up.

Oh, now Connections is a show I really miss. I will have to pick that up for my daughter. Too bad it is not airing anywhere.

Now THAT I'd love to see re-aired. As much as I loved "Cosmos," I loved "Connections" even more.

I think they air it off an on all the time. Or maybe one of the other science channels. My TiVo often has an episode waiting. Nevertheless, it would be nice to watch all the episodes in order again. I'm in the same boat; I credit Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov for a lifelong interest in science.

It's interesting seeing discussions of evolution and global warming from a 28-year old TV series. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

It would be worth watching just to hear that again.

I used to have the book that came with the series. Gorgeously put together. Lost it in a housefire. I wonder what it would take to find another one?

Given her comments, somehow I don't think paperback is what she had in mind. There's a ton of used hardcover copies being sold on Amazon though.
