Although it was inevitable it's still sad. More competition I think would of really been quite beneficial to the people.

This is why IMO it was smart of Microsoft to avoid placing any next gen optical in the 360... it was far to early to commit one way or another to a HD Optical format. AFAIK Microsoft also gets a nice royalty check from Blu-Ray for a codec.

I'm just glad they're shelving the XBox Ultimate. Seriously, guys. Design one system. Produce it. How many goddamn skus does one console need?

agreed.. enough is enough.. Microsoft needs to be focused on a cheaper..cooler running.. HD equipped SKU that hits the $200-$250 price point.

The spin annoys me. You can't declare something shelved if the manufacturer never announced or acknowledged it as a product.

Yes, MS needs to focus on what there doing right - a console that plays games! I personally felt the HD-DVD was the better format and HD DVD had a better road map. Blu-Ray was just always Sony's primary focus and there marketing showed that.

I agree completely. It would be kind of fun if they came out with BluRay 360, though.

The whole HD-DVD/BlueRay angle seems like a waste of time. I'd rather have the cheaper console for games and buy a dedicated high-def DVD player down the road.

"Ultimate Shelved" is an assumption. Who says they won't make an Ultimate with Blu-Ray? And who said they were ready to totally give up on HD DVD? In fact, the "Ultimate" SKU was an assumption to begin with. As is the idea that the format wars are over. I don't think I EVER recall seeing a case where a competitor didn't fight it out until the bitter end, that is, right down to the wire, moments before it would no longer be prudent to hold out on cutting your losses.

This is, at most, a sign that you should probably hold off on building your HD DVD collections, or even buying that cheaper player you thought might be kinda cool to have. I'd say the best time to start investing in one or the other would be when retailers start dumping one in favor of the other.

And really, citing a PS3 news site is hardly the best place to get objective perspectives on something like this.

I have the 360 HD-DVD add-on. I buy mostly dual format (DVD/HD-DVD) movies so I can watch them in any of the players in the house. That was the big appeal to the HD-DVD format to me. The ability to buy a new movie that can be watched on the big HD set or your SD set with DVD player in the bedroom/office/whatever.

Will Sony winning the HD format wars mean much to me? Sort of. I'll have the 21st Century equivalent of Betamax movies, but I can still watch them on my player. It won't drive me to pick up a Blu-ray player any quicker, as the cost of the 360 add-on made it more of an impulse purchase than a calculated decision. Until Blu-ray players cost $200, or I find a must-have PS3 exclusive, I won't be joining the "winning side" anytime soon.

I might have to get a PS3 for Disgaea 3. Thing is, whenever I get into this whole HD-DVD/Blu-Ray debate I seem to forget that I don't own an HDTV and really can't afford one.

Why would that be sarcasm?

Being limited by the old DVD format as games get bigger and more complex is kind of silly. Sure, I suppose the advent of hard drives allow for compressed content to be extracted, but I'm sure developers wouldn't mind in the least having more space to work with.

Well then.. I'll wait for the game that fulfills this "advantage" then.. shoot me a memo when it happens.

I'm not sure of any game that takes advantage of blu-ray's capacity yet, but I do know that there is a game out there that suffered from the DVD's limitations: Mass Effect. It's evident in the multiple identical environments, and the loss of some features, like wear and tear to player character armor over time. I heard an interview with one of the developers on a podcast (can't remember which one, though, may have been MOG) that DVD space was a big issue with the game.

hmm..suffered? didnt it sell 1.6 million copies? If it was really such a game breaker they could have simply split the game onto 2 DVD's. Sure added storage space will help with certain games like Final Fantasy that use horrendous amounts of cut scenes.. but honestly I'll wait until I see a game that really benefits in tangible ways before I announce the added storage space of Blu-Ray as a key feature in the PS3 vs Xbox 360 war.

edit

Just read that DMC 4 on the PS3 has a install time of 25 min. to install 5GB of "something" before you can even play.. no thanks.

Funny, I just got this in my inbox from Forbes:
No Blue Skies for Blu-Ray

Basically, the idea is that IPTV and digital formats will replace hard copy disks in the next year or two anyway. As the article puts it, "the day is coming when the stacks of plain vanilla DVDs that clutter many home entertainment centers will go the way of the CD collection." If Blu-Ray is going to beat out that future, they have to win quickly and become the standard before the new wave gains momentum.

If an HD-ready 360 concept was shelved, I could see the future of IPTV being at least as big a factor as the fall of HD-DVDs.

I'm starting to think that they never really were serious about it in the first place, considering they just officially announced their IPTV for Xbox 360 service at CES.

So paramount hasn't made an announcement but everyone thinks that they will jump the ship to Blu-ray. It isn't really over until the fat lady sings. I also have a hard time accepting news from a biased website. While some of it is true it's easy to put a "Death knell" spin on things.

She's mumbling to herself man. She's getting ready.

Even if Paramount sticks out their 18 month contract Blu-Ray still has 70% market share when it comes to studio exclusivity. Getting Warner to switch was huge for them.

I'll agree on the eventually part. Forbes claiming in a year or two is plain nuts. Digital distribution of HD content that's on par with BR/HDDVD isn't going to be practical until a solid user base has a media device in their living room with a terabyte+ of storage and a seriously fat internet connection. Unless of course you think it's OK to wait a few days for your 50GB digital copy of Spider Man 4 to download and only have a day or two to watch it before it gets wiped.

Assuming BR eventually wins, if you're going to stream me something equivalent, I'll need a reliable 54Mbps connection since that's the max BR bandwidth. I don't know about the rest of you, but my DSL falls a bit short!
