Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
Friday, January 4th, 2008 - 11:58am
New Advance Wars for the DS. There hasn't been really been any new information about it, other than the release date.
Online play will be included, apparently, as well as a map download center. New CO's, and a new world-the cartoonish characters are now gone, apparently.
Kotaku has impressions here:

Apparently, it's going to be released on 1.21.08 in the US.

I heard so much praise for Advance Wars DS before I bought a DS that I couldn't help feeling dissapointed after I had played it. It wasn't a bad game but it completely stalled out between 15-20 missions. Not bad but I was puzzled by the adulation it got/gets.
Removing the annoying and extra hip Commanding Officers should help a fair bit. I hope the game is good but I'm not going to hold my breath for it.

I loved the first DS AW and I'm really looking forward to the changes. The dual screen battles and uber CO powers I always felt took away some of the fun of the original.

I can tell this installment will be full of inane dialogue, hundreds of numbers thrown in player's face, and awkwardly forced rock-paper-scissors gameplay combined with what looks like terrible graphics encased in a clunky interface. It's Advance Wars allright, and after buying both the GBA and DS prequels, hoping for improvement, I'll go ahead and skip this turn.
This is all true. What bugged me the most about this fact was that eventually you'd get to a point where you'd realize that there was actually a "solution" to the map. Like go here, then go here, then do this, etc. It went from being a strategy game to a puzzler, basically, with a couple ways to win each map. Yuck.

I just hope this game finally takes advantage of the DS system strengths. Too many DS games are just warmed over GBA ports with a few touchscreen elements added in.
Hmm... looking at the screens in the article... they HAVEN'T. Personally, I didn't mind the anime influence, but why must the Japanese developers be so lazy with graphics? This is the same thing with the Pokemon franchise... sure, people will buy it anyway... but come on!

Way to damper my glee for Days of Ruins. Here I was jumping into this thread to gush about how fun Advance Wars is and with every message I read, my smile slowly turns into a frown. With that being said, you're all correct.
I just hope they can focus more on the strategy this time since they spent the last one focusing on gimmicks. Plus it should be dark and scary with lots of gray and brown colors.

what, you don't find pink and purple to be grim and gritty?

I played through the original Advance Wars and the DS edition, and as long as this one retains the great gameplay of both of those titles, I will love it.
AW:DS was a staple of my gaming habit for over 3 months earlier this year. That said, I think I'll be passing on this one unless they ironed out all the flaws. I just picked up Panzer Tactics and have been very impressed so far, and that is likely to scratch my TBS itch until Civ:Revolutions comes out.

Portable Civ sounds really fun to me. I'm not trying to be a killjoy. I spent so much time on AW on the GBA as well as both Fire Emblems. I just got tired of playing a game where there were the map basically became a puzzle to solve and not a dynamic battle to win with strategy.
Or translated, it kicked my butt and I didn't want to take the time to find the solution at a certain point. That may be fine for some, but not me. Matt makes the more salient point, though. Nintendo needs to figure out something to do with the second screen. At times I've been tempted to pick up a DS again. Most recently by the lure of Pokemon. But then I remember that I could just go get a cheap GBA and a GBA Pokemon if I wanted to scratch that itch.

Just as an aside... have we ever gotten a reason for why the (reportedly) excellent 1701 AD game hasn't ever been picked up in North America?

the cut-scenes and character designs look cool, but for god sake... WHY the crappy pink landscape? Why the crumby GBA graphics?

Battlemap graphics aside, if the gameplay is similar to all the old Advance Wars games, I'm onboard. Granted, since Panzer Tactics DS has been kicking my turn-based-tactical-butt, I'll probably be ready for a Pepto Bismol colored landscape and completely over the top characters. Then again I'm a fan of both Batallion Wars, so I'm probably certifiable..

I actually like the blend of strategy and puzzle in the AW and FE games. They're fun for what they are. If I want more raw strategy with less puzzle, I've got Civ 4, Galciv 2, or EU3.
As for that video... ugh. Some horrible, atrocious color choices there.
The pink I can agree on. And while I'm not a huge fan of the GBA graphics, I can understand why they'd want simplicity. The DS has a limited resolution and with that many units onscreen it can get pretty hard to distinguish exactly what is what. Age of Empires DS had much better graphics but it became a pain to try to select the exact unit you wanted and with large armies it could get confusing which units were which. The clear lines and simple graphics that don't overlap their tiles solves this.

Yeah I have no problem with the graphics themselves. The color choices are definitely weird but so far from game breaking I can't really get excited about them.
I'll buy it.

I'm not excited about it, either. Just fail to understand how a "mature" and "grim and gritty" overhaul of the series is helped by GBA-level graphics and battles taking place on Barbie's dream planet. The DS is capable of so much more... why not "adult-ify" the gameplay graphics along with the cut-scenes?

I've been all over this since release info was dropped sometime around October of last year. Downloadable maps is an awesome idea, and a great way to add longevity I think. Advance Wars is the only DS game that has received more than 5 hours of gameplay on my DS. Last I checked, my total playtime was hovering somewhere near 70 hours.

I'd rather see a Field Commander sequel than another Advance Wars (barring a serious franchise revision)

Yep. Any fan of ADVANCE WARS who owns a PSP needs to play FIELD COMMANDER as soon as possible.

sweeeeet.
FC is VERY much in the Advance Wars mold... just with no anime influence, much more detailed graphics, and lots of voice over. It also featured internet play, create a map and downloadable maps over a year ago.

I definitely see your point. It makes perfect sense.
It's just that for me when it comes to a portable game the graphics are probably the one thing that can't really bother me as long as I can tell what I'm doing. I'm something of a graphics whore when it comes to my PC and Console games, but I'm after a very different thing when I fire up a portable.
I suppose I may be in the minority there. Bonus for me though. Just means I enjoy my games that little bit more

How does Field Commander stand up to Dai Senryaku VII? When I want a more complex and deep game than Advance Wars with similar gameplay, I've got that handy.
well, Ive never played that one... FC is essentially Advance Wars with a new coat of paint and some extra features. Dai Senryaku VII looks a little more like a full-fledged tabletop wargame on the pc/xbox.
I think I read a rumor that Dai Senryaku was coming to the PSP in some format...

This 1up preview and interview about the new Advance Wars is quite revealing. I always desired leveling up the units in AW (now I just hope they will also be somehow persistent) and the reworked CO functioning can be fun.
You can't take the sky from me.
Yes, it is, and if it's a solid port of DSVII, I highly recommend it.
