In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Story
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 - 10:20pm
It's another Uwe Boll flick.
The story line looks like it. check
It's based on a game. check
It has an all star cast. wtf?
Jason Statham, John Rhys-Davies, Burt Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Ron Perlman, Matthew Lillard.
There must be a pretty good payoff for these guys to want to associate with Uwe....

I saw the trailer at a showing of "the Golden Compass" two weeks ago- a week after I finished replaying the original game (which I've always enjoyed). MY guess? Game will be more fun/better.
Re: Stars: I always remember Jeremy Irons got into the 1st D&D movie- and that was nothing to write home about.....
"Eat Keel, Hellbug!"
The only redeeming quality to that movie, Mr. Irons apparently saw the state of the production and thought "To hell with it." He overacted with a gusto that even the great John Malkovich can't match; it was an entertaining diversion in an otherwise excrementous movie. Though it makes me wonder why he took his role in Eragon seriously, while a better movie, that is like saying having one arm cut off is better than having both arms removed. Poor Irons, there seriously acting towards some kid actor with all the acting ability of a plank of wood. Not to mention having his character killed off halfway through to give the badly written main character some incredibly cliché "depth" (hard to tell is was written by a teenager, ain't it?).
I'm rather surprised that Ron Perlman is involved, I thought he had finally broken out of these sorts of roles with the starring role in Hellboy and all, poor guy has had a long history of working on stinkers in order to pay the bills. No one else there really surprises me though, even though I have a fondness for Rhys-Davies and wish he got more respectable acting roles in movies.
I was trying to think before... is there any actor, EVER, who is LESS "midevilly" than Jason Statham? *
He's the exact same dude he plays in every movie he's been in, yet in leather breeches.
*actually, Ray Liotta might be close.

Yeah, they're not all A-list actors, but they also seem like they don't need the money, which I'm assuming is the only reason they're doing this. Not too many Oscar nominations headed their way from this work, I'm going to presume...

I believe Burt Reynolds takes that honor. The only way this movie will be entertaining is if he rides through the movie in a black trans am while being chased by an overweight and surly county sheriff.

I remember watching that movie just to see how many times the dwarf ended up taller than the rest of the cast.

Boll casts his movies very shortly before they start shooting, and shoots them very quickly, that's how he get the people he gets. It's no big commitment, and and they don't have a lot of time to consider it.

Maybe he's just messing with them, playing it straight in the camp film and hamming it up in the serious role. In both cases it was the most enjoyable part of the film.

Yeah, it's not so much a big paycheck as an easy, guaranteed one. As an occasional freelancer, I can understand the draw of someone calling you up and saying they've got an easy job you can pump out next week and collect a decent paycheck for. Even if it's not something you'd be proud of, it's pretty attractive, especially compared with the uncertainty of most projects.
Yeah, everyone has to pay the rent. Even Burt Reynolds.

Well, Jason Statham's line-reading of that was so flat that, even in the short time of the trailer I thought it very poor and uninspiring.
"Eat Keel, Hellbug!"
I had a pretty... unenthusiastic reaction when I saw the trailer... then I saw that it was "A Dungeon Siege story" and that pretty much killed any reason to even rent it. Some movies you watch on cable to see if they're really that bad... (The D&D movie comes to mind.) but that's one that you just change the channel on.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Dungeon Siege, it's an interesting game. The player growth system was really rather cool, it just needed a bit of balance for multirole characters.
But that is the very last game I would ever pick to base a movie on. And we're talking way behind something like Doom, even. Hack n' slash rpg games are just not good movie fodder.

Commence your hatred, gentlemen.Wasn't this supposed to be the first part of Uwe's "Fantasy Trilogy"? Or did it get cut down to a single too-long piece of "Boll" so he could move on to something else?

I didn't play the first game, but I was under the impression that the game hadn't a plot. Like, none whatsoever.
Of course, that's hardly a handicap for a gentleman of Boll's talents.

Just rent Rutger Hauer's "Flesh and Blood" instead.

Unless you have horrible memories associated with the movie because of the company with which you saw it (and I wasn't that fond of the film anyway).

Yeah, but if you want a good bad movie, Rutger's your guy. Best actor in the niche film business. I love his films, and this was done during the best part of his career. Nighthawks, Bladerunner, Osterman Weekend (a lesser-known Robert Ludlum film, done before he died), a bunch of other good ones right around the same time. (The Hitcher came later iirc.)
Never saw Snowy River, though. Blood of Heroes, yes. Man From Snowy River, no.

Yep, originally he was going to split it into 2 movies (a la Kill Bill style) but then decided against it and apparently has spent the last year agonizing over the cuts and edits (this was originally supposed to be released Nov and Dec 2006 - 2 dates for Part1 and Part2). But don't worry, we still have Far Cry (which filmed in Canada.. because, it's so tropical looking there) and Seed to look forward to. Rumor has it he even accidentally deleted the Seed script from his computer and couldn't recover it. He then re-wrote the script from scratch and claims it's even better than it was before. Are you excited yet?
