The gamers we are...
These days I steer clear of MMORPGs. I used to be a WoW player a long time ago. That time has since past. It was hard getting over the urge to play after investing so much time into my character but ultimately it opened up the timeslot for other things...new games mostly ![]()
I'm a big fan of coop games though and will give most genres a go. Except old arcade games (sorry). Sure they're 'cute'. But to me they'll always be a novelty as opposed to a mentally stimulating experience. DM just doesn't hold the same appeal for me as playing alongside your mates. Team DM is ok but one-on-one DM against your mates is one of those things I don't think I'll ever get used to.
Getting back to a point, (and since I'm modifying this first post so it's not a self-intro) I pose these questions:
What genre's do you prefer to play?
What genre's, not matter how much you try, just can't get into?
What genre combinations/merging should never have been made?
Regards.

I would venture to guess you skipped the "Code of Conduct" thread? The one labeled "Read Me First?"
I did...sorry ^_^! I'll do that now.
Well, the thread probably won't last long, but I must say -- it's cool to see a Delphi programmer. The first version of that in full 32-bit was the most glorious programming environment I've ever seen. It's a shame Borland took it off into the database direction instead of appealing more to hobbyists like they used to.
Didn't take long to change so it's no longer a self-intro
We're a dying breed I suppose
I'm do database programming most of the time. It's a job requirement.
It is centred a lot around database development but there are people out there that are trying to change that. There are drag-and-drop components available for OpenGL development (e.g. GLScene) so games development isn't entirely out of the question.
This thread does not deliver.

Action RPG's, MMO's, brawlers and small squat RTS's are in for me.
Adventure games, platformers, overly realistic squad based shooters, micromanage heavy RTS's, 900 unit TBS's, most racers (especially non arcade racers) are out.

Not that I've tried a whole lot, but sports games bore me to tears. Granted it takes a really good game of football to get my attention anyway.....but I grew up in NJ and am a longstanding Devils fan, and nothing can get me to enjoy a hockey game. Hockey video game, that is.
And I'll mention one merging that never should have happened, in my opinion: sports game-RPG. Blitzball was the worst mini game ever. Thats one area in FF10 in which I was not too crazy about being a completionist.
Video games don't ruin kids. If Pac-Man ruined us as kids, we would all be running around in darkened rooms, eating magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music.

My interest in sports games was rekindled recently when I visited my bro-in-law who bought a Wii for his daughters. I was surprisingly taken with Wii Sports. I think it was the user controls which suckered me in. My arm was sore for days after that Baseball game.
wii sports is really fun....but to me that's not a traditional "sports" game. I'm not a fan of studying statistics and the kind of strategy involved I guess, in, say, Madden or NBA games.

Interesting way to try and save the thread.
The RPG genre is unquestionably my favorite. I find other genres fun, but nothing really engrosses me like a good RPG. I'm speaking of games such as Fallout, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, and to a lesser extent ones like Gothic or The Witcher. jRPGs, Oblivion, and action RPGs in the vein of Diablo hold no interest for me; though for different reasons each. And the first person who suggests MMORPG and RPG are interchangable gets throttled, they don't enter the discussion because it is an entirely different genre.
As for genres I cannot get into, that would be sports games and racing games, no interest at all for me.
As for genre combinations I think never should have been made... that is difficult. It really depends on the developers, if they are good, they can make a genre combination work well. I'll just say whatever combination you would call Oblivion.
I wanna say RPGs but I was bored to tears with Oblivion.
However, I'm playing through Baldur's Gate 2, and I'm in awe of how epic it is. I'm glad I've avoided spoilers all these years, damn. I think in terms of traditional fantasy RPGs, it's probably the best I've ever played (Better than Planescape Torment in that it's more traditional and combat is more fun).
Also I like top-down shooters and fighting games. Coop stuff, I guess.

Welcome to GWJ stuvik.
Anyway, I am a big RPG fan. I also like RTS games and some FPS. I keep my selection of games to the PC though. Most console games bore me too fast
I am also kind of a "sports game anti-fan"
not because I don't see the value of sports games (even though I find them repetitive) but because EA seem to own everything sports related, and they are making a lot of money off of their yearly releases that doesn't really add anything much over previous years' releases...
Wii Sport games are interesting. But I am old school, I rather do my excercises outside or at the gym. (Oh and the motion required for Wii boxing is completely different from the real thing)

Adventure games first. Then FPS, action/adventure (whatever that is), stealth, puzzles, music games, and RPG (but no Final Fantasy), in roughly that order. Co-op is always fun.
No Madden for me, thanks. I like some RTS and turn-based strategy games but they get old fast. MMORPGs generally confuse me.
I don't think RPG and FPS should mate, and an FPS MMORPG, like Hellgate, really does sound hellish to me. I don't like peanut butter, and it should not mix with chocolate, which is fine on its own.

Four the first four posts or so I was completely confused. I was kind of wondering where in the ToS questions about genre preferences were outlawed!
But to the question at hand.
I am a big RPG fan. Specifically I like D&D-ish RPGs like Baldurs Gate and the Might and Magic series. I'm currently going through the SSI Gold Box series from back in the 16-color days. I also really like turn based 4x games, but hardly find the time to play them to completion.
Despite my allegiance to the PC as a gaming platform I have a hard time getting into most RTSs. They just get boring after a short while. I make an exception for games where the real-time portion is purely tactics based, like the old Myth games, or the Total War series. If I'm doing unit recruitment and building, I want to do it outside the realtime interface.
The new crop of action-oriented RPGs have been painfully disappointing thus far. I'm giving Oblivion a try (I got it for 5 bucks, so why not), and at least the combat is a bit less snore-inducing than it was in Morrowind. I dislike the style because it generally eschews party-based mechanics and eliminates much of the depth you can achieve with a slower-paced system like the Baldur's Gate series.

My first and best love are RPGs (of all types and origins), closely followed by plot/character driven action games. I also enjoy strategy and board games, but not RTS. Other than that I generally play just about any genre of game as long as the game is good, though, with the exception of sports games (although occasionally I'll dabble in a skateboarding game or a game with a Mario sports style approach).
I can't really think of a genre mashup that I think was a mistake, though. I guess even when I don't really get into a new style of game, I appreciate the fact that the developers tried to do something new.

Turn-based strategy games, turn-based tactical (squad-level) games, real-time strategy games, roleplaying games, first-person shooters, stealth shooters, and Rock Band (I know it's not it's own genre
). Also, most any combination of the above.

Welcome.
I absolutely love RPGs. My family was supposed to go to Chicago one night, but we were heavily snowed in, so dad let me rent a Playstation (one) from the local FamVid and I got Final Fantasy VII and another game. I never even looked at the other game. Soon after I bought my own PS1 and FFVII and never looked back, except for now, but only to recount said story and not in regret. I know some might say that its an RPG on rails, but I prefer to think of it as a story Im in, and not just reading.
/digress I also really like fighters, platformers, FPS, and RTS. Favorites include Soul Calibur, God of War 2, Team Fortress 2, and various Command & Conquer titles.
I've invested a lot of time into WoW, but I've pretty much quit. And I'll probably never play another MMORPG. I also dislike sports games not on the Wii.
I hate when movies are made into games. It's almost never done well. I can't think of any game with the name "Movie title: The Game" that has been any good with the exception of the Star Wars games on Super NES. I'm all for games set in a movie universe, but when the release dates for a game and movie almost coincide, it makes for a usually sh*t title.

Welcome to GWJ!
I'm tall, paler than I used to be, and...whoops!
RPGs, team-based shooters, Rock Band, and Civilization (turn based strategy) are up at the top of my list. I was into competitive Guild Wars for a while but haven't gone sniffing around MMO or psuedo-MMO games since I quit GW.
I'll play a good platformer or action/adventure game when I see one.
I tend to pick up one racing game every other year. Same with sports games. And RTS's. I enjoy one occasionally but they're not genres I follow or buy right away - I tend to wait for critical acclaim or critical mass of friends playing it.
I have strong suspicion that I'd like a helicopter combat game but I've never really played one.
Genre combo we should never see? Monthly Subscription FPS's.
I put enough money into Xbox Live.

Maybe I should give NHL games another go.

I'm primarily a PC Gamer, although I'm open for anything. My favourite genres include traditional RPGs, turn-based strategy games, adventure games. In other words, I like anything that people query about whether or not it's dead.
However, I'm open to most genres, from first person shooters to platformers to rhythm games, even some sports games even though I'm not much of a fan of sports in real life.
I prefer games that I can become immersed in than move on without need for replayability, that have a great over-arching storyline so it's at least somewhat linear in it's executiion, and I prefer playing solo and playing at my one pace. Thus, the only genre I really can't get into is MMOs. However, I might consider playing an upcoming one in the future because I'm a huge BioWare fanboy so I'll see what they have for me.

One of the LoTRO devs wrote a "resume" containing all the notable deeds he'd accomplished in games over the years. I thought it was a pretty cool idea, but haven't taken the time to write one myself.
I like a wide variety of games. FPSs, started with Wolf 3d and haven't stopped. For the most part I like single player mode but with GWJ and TF2 I've come to love multiplayer. I especially love stealth FPSs like Thief and SplinterCell. I like most RPGs. I've played Everquest, WoW, Final Fantasy Series, Oblivion, and lots more, each with their own fun. I wish I was good at RTS but I can never have the patience to study and get good at them. I'll play sports games (real and arcadey) , Platformers, action adventure, and even chess. If there was 1 genre I didn't care for it would be turn based strategy games not sure why tho.

Not to derail the thread, but why aren't there more turn-based tactical games? The last two I can remember are Jagged Alliance and Fallout Tactics.
