3D Realm's servers are getting slammed to pieces but it looks like they are finally unveiling DNF tomorrow. It's pretty cold outside, guess hell finally decided to freeze over....

"Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise," explained Broussard. "It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming."

If this game ever comes out it better be the most polished game in existence. Seriously, this needs to be the Dorodango of video games.

Remember, only by treating everyone with dignity and respect can we maintain the element of surprise for that inevitable day when we wipe our enemies from the face of the Earth.

For clarification, "bnpederson" is pronounced "Brian."

Having never heard of that before the link I'm going to say no. Battlecruiser's problem seems to be the scope of it. From that link, it said:

Quote:
If you wanted to just command your fighters in a space battle from a strategic perspective, you could. If you wanted to climb in the cockpit and fly a fighter, you could. If you wanted to shuttle down to a planet and shoot the natives FPS style, the game supported that too.

That's classic over ambition. Like Omikron (which I have actually played) it tried to be several genres and thus didn't do any of them well. I don't think Duke Nukem Forever needs to do that, it just needs to be a very polished funny/campy FPS for my money.

Mind I'm not saying it will be. I've no clue, obviously. But outside of taking forever in production I'm not seeing that many ties between your linked Battlecruiser 3000 and Duke Nukem Forever.

Why do they keep showing us pictures of Duke? I've seen him over the course of 11 years, I know what he looks like.

Note to devs: I want to see gameplay images!

But that is it exactly, a long production time has little relation to overall polish. Prey is a closer but less dramatic example, which took forever and turned out only okay. Plus I was running off to dinner, so that was the best example I could think of on short notice.

I dunno, my thought was if they spent that whole time focusing on streamlining and, well, polishing the gameplay/balance aspects rather than the graphics then those years might actually hold them in good stead. While a lot has changed in graphics and physics in the last ten-plus years not as much has changed in the First Person Shooter genre. At least not so much that focusing on that wouldn't help.

George just posted on Shacknews:

Guys just to manage expectations...

This is a teaser. It's not a full blown trailer like the 2001 trailer (but something like that is coming). I tried to be clear about that in the message board post, so just bear in mind that it's a teaser

Enjoy.

I'm calling it... 35 seconds of logos, a 10-second shot of Duke saying "Yuppie Kay Yay motherf*ckers", 15 seconds of credits. No gameplay footage.

You're making the probably false assumption that they have gameplay images to show.

Well we've got the bad scenario example (Battlecruiser) and the OK example (Prey) established, but let's not forget the really great example (Team Fortress 2).

I love "real world" settings over gothic deathmatch maps, which is why I loved setting pipebombs at a movie theater in Duke Nukem 3D so much. I'd love to do the same in a new Duke game.
