Some early screenshots and a Q&A session with Firaxis Executive Producer Barry Caudill.

I wonder if they're planning to have an alternate interface for players still on SD televisions. It seems that the text in these screenshots would be impossible to read unless you have HD.

I thought this was an interesting quote to pick out:

Barry Caudill, Executive Producer - Firaxis Games wrote:
The prototype for this game was on PC and still runs on PC. The cool thing about his game core is that it doesn't know or care what system it's on. It's just the game core, and consequentially, it's whatever the presentation layer and the interface layer we wrap around it, that's what knows what system it's on. So, as I said, the prototype runs on a PC, but then when we wrap the presentation layer for the next gen consoles, then it works on those. But it also works on the Nintendo DS with no memory. It runs because that's the way he's written code ever since the Commodore 64

So there you go. Same (core) game on DS and 360, the presentation layer is what's different. Now if someone can figure out a way to transfer my saves...

I so want this to be good on the DS...not sure I can sit that long at an Xbox without trying to shoot a rifle or throw a football.

Best quote from the preview is from Caeser in a screen shot: "Stand aside, smelly one."

They finally learned something from FreeCiv! ;p

I could see playing it on a handheld to get the Civ fix anytime you need it, but it looks too "lite" for my full-time Civ needs.

From a more positive bucket: how the 3D graphics of Civ: Revoution is brought to the DS. It's fun to read, too, but is not very in-depth.

It's not Wandering Toast. Except in TF2, where it usually is.

It's a trick. Get an axe.

It's going to be cell animated! Nice find. The more news I hear about the DS version the more excited I'm getting. If it doesn't turn out to be an awesome DS game I think I will cry.

We still have two threads going for this, I'm not sure where to post to.

Seven Part Preview

This is done by the guys at Apolyton, who live and breathe Civ. They were the first people outside of Firaxis to get a look and a chance to play Civ Revolution. The later parts have some gameplay videos as well.

It is, kind of. I've heard a rumble that the Wii version has been "delayed indefinitely" which is shorthand for effectively cancelled. That would be startling.

The Wii version has always been the last one they were aiming for.
Civ Rev has been primarily designed for the DS and the 360. It's a planned Spring release on DS, 360, and PS3, but the Wii version was tentatively scheduled for a Fall release. So if it's just a delay, that makes sense - they were not focusing on the Wii at this point and they might just need to focus their attention on the other consoles.

Personally I think it has more to do with multiplayer. Sid Meier has been gushing a fair bit about being able to finally bring Civ to consoles. A large part of that is the accessible multiplayer - the DS version is supposed to support wifi multiplayer.

Here's a relevant quote from Part 2 of the series linked to above:

Quote:
On the multiplayer front, options are head-to-head and team (2-on-2 or 4-on-4). Whichever option you choose you will play your turns simultaneously meaning not having to wait for another player to complete their turn before you can play yours. There will, however, be a turn timer option if there is concern about the amount of time that can be taken per turn otherwise. Another possibility in any of these setups is "˜hot join'. If a player drops out they can be let back in or, depending upon how the game is setup, another player could come in and take over their civilization from that point. We really learned a lot from CivIV about what brakes multiplayer games and [we're] trying to address those issues, Sid says. One of those primary issues is the length of time it typically takes to play a game from start to finish which Sid himself cites as the biggest breaker of multiplayer games of Civ.

Multiplayer will be a really big part of this game, Sid says. From the moment CivRev was publicly announced the optional "Game of the Week" ("GotW") challenge has been mentioned again and again and understandably so. This effort is a new and major undertaking for Firaxis, one that does not compare to anything else they have done in support of their existing titles.

[When you] sign-up [for it], we'll send you information to start a single-player game but it will be the identical map, identical starting location as anyone else who is playing [it]. You then try and generate your best score on that game and you can compare your score with anyone else's who's playing [it across] the world. So every week, there will be one world's greatest Civilization player: the highest scorer. You can play the game as many times as you want, try different strategies.

Arguably, one of the advantages of PC and other computer-based games as compared to console-based ones is that they are more likely to develop and nurture online communities around them. Certainly, some console manufacturers have done a better job than others in this respect such as Microsoft when it comes to Xbox Live -- Firaxis is looking forward to tapping into that system for instance. However, other platforms are not so well supported if at all. It is through "GotW" that CivRev will be able to take advantage of or perhaps help foster a more communal feeling among players.

For the 360 version at least, they're planning on regular DLC as well as the ongoing Game of the Week (GOTW) feature, which is described above - they upload a map, anyone who wants to can download it, play the map, and compete in a worldwide leaderboard. I imagine there will be a different leaderboard for each difficulty setting.

The comment about some companies doing online features and communities well seems to strike at this issue - it seems like Firaxis wants to make this a multiplayer friendly game and they might be having the hardest time doing that on the Wii.

That's my best guess at least.
