The Mitchell Report: Catching All (or most)
Thursday, December 13th, 2007 - 12:08pm
The Mitchell Report on steroids for Major League Baseball is coming out in a couple of hours. The first bombshell /non-bombshell player on the list is Roger Clemens. Also rumored to be on the list is Andy Pettite. Strange how much crap Barry Bonds has eaten, been a defiant ass, and how little crap Clemens has eaten, and been a media darling-type player. That is until today (allegedly).
21 months to investigate, and 60 to 80 current and former players to be linked to steroids. As a cynic, I don't think any name would surprise me who is listed. Unless it's Joe Torre, because his nose is unnaturally large.

Give us the names! Give us the names!
listening to it now and hes taking his sweet time.
Wow, just wow. Clemens, Tejada, Pettite
, Gagne...the list goes on and one. And the details the reports provide along with the images of checks is just really damning.
I'm no big Clemens fan, but I don't think Clemens is a media darling by any stretch of the imagination, I just think Bonds having broken the HR records put him in the crosshairs.

there we go! not Gregg Zaun!
David Justice, Mo Vaughn too!
Edit: Paul Lo Duca.
Barry Bonds is also mentioned (shocked, I am). I wonder how this will affect his upcoming trial.
The best part is the checks from idiotic players. Who the hell buys drugs with a check?

Most of the hard evidence is against Clemens and Pettitte; the rest is pretty much hearsay, rumors, and the checks, which in of themselves don't prove consumption (see the Lo Duca/Gagne angle). Without linking every name mentioned in the report to a positive drug test, it really doesn't prove anything. This thing stinks of the Salem Witch Trials or McCarthyism.

What I find interesting is that it's just a small sampling of the larger issue. Sure, it names some significant players, but does anyone believe that there was only one guy in one clubhouse providing performance enhancing drugs? Or that BALCO was the only lab that supplied players? Or that there was just one internet pharmaceutical company providing drugs to players?
To me, it's just a small sample of a much bigger problem. A few more names added to a list of "suspects." It's the culture of baseball in this era and how to proceed towards a better future that's more important than the individuals themselves.

You know the one name that isn't in there in connection to what management and ownership knew? The name of the man who owned the team that was Grand Central station for steroids use in the 90s, the team Jose Canseco allegedly introduced the likes of Rafael Palmiero and Sammy Sosa to the great steroid gravy train? Oh, you can find this person's name when discussing the impetus and inspiration for this investigation, but not about what he did or didn't know about steroids in his former capacity as a baseball owner. Who's that, you ask? None other than George W. Bush, the man who sat on top of a mountain of syringes when he ran the Texas Rangers. This just lends more credence to my theory that there's a whitewash going on; to possibly expunge the president from any culpability in the steroids era and pin it on the likes of the management of the Mets and Giants. At the risk of dragging this thread to the hometown of the Indians ball club, I'm frankly not surprised.

Umm, Sammy Sosa was traded from the Rangers in 1989. Canseco was traded to the Rangers in 1992. If you can't the basic facts straight then I don't give much credence to your theory. And your earlier statement that you consider an event where some millionaires are embarrassed in the media analogous to one event where people were wrongly killed and another where careers were ruined to the point some committed suicide doesn't help either.
WAR: Coda, Archmage, Vortex <Unguilded>
Your facts are in error. Sosa broke in with the Rangers in 1989; he was traded in 1992. I concede I was wrong on their stints in Texas overlapping, but I hold firm to my belief that the absence of any mention of Bush's tenure in Texas while the steroids era was at it's height is suspicious.

Nope. He was traded in 1992 from the White Sox to the Cubs. In 1989, he was called up by the Rangers and packaged at the trade deadline to the White Sox in an ill-fated attempt to bolster the Rangers playoff hunt. In fact he played more games for the White Sox in 1989 than he did for the Rangers.

For those who don't want to actually comb through the report: Player names, list style
Easily the most shocking part of this are the allegations that John Rocker and Jose Canseco know how to use the Internet.

Regarding the list, my biggest problem with it is that for every one person listed on it, there are probably 25 more not. So, unless they are going to be really thorough, and search out everyone, why list the ones here?
I don't think it's possible for them to come up with an exhaustive list of the users. I mean, it's like investigating sand in the Sahara.

I feel pretty vindicated as a Sox fan.
Is there a reason reason Sosa and McGwire aren't on there? I only caught half the story in the paper.

Just because someone isn't mentioned in the report does not vindicate them. Almost everyone in the report were either part of the BALCO investigation, the Signature pharmacy investigation, or a client of Kirk Radomski (directly or indirectly). There wasn't much (any?) original investigative work done by Mitchell and friends.

so if you are listed, you are an user. if you aren't listed, it doesn't mean you are not a user.
even if you tested negative, it doesn't mean you aren't using (according to Mitchell in his press conference yesterday).
so does that pretty much cover everyone in the Majors then? and there's really no way to prove your innocence.
edit: i suppose you could prove your innocence by being a really awful ball player.

Well that conspiracy had no legs.... you had it half right though. People didn't need to be in contact with Canseco to start using roids though. Just the blatant fact everyone knew he was juicing back then and was getting away with it was enough to encourage other players to start using. Kinda funny he was one of my favorite players growing up and I'm not really mad at him. I cant remember though did he ever fail a test or did he just admit to using it after the fact his career was dead so he could also start pointing the finger at other guys. I also believe every name he names.

This quote pretty much sums it up for me
On the Los Angeles Times' Web site, one reader wrote, "I could care less about fair play as long as these overpaid athletes entertain me."
I'm not surprised, not shocked, most athletes have long since lost any role model appeal, so they are entertainers at this point and thats about it.
It would be nice if they didnt use the roids, but when the industry they are in has looked the other way for so long and the fans demanded more, i dont think anyone should be surprised.
Its funny, you can take away someones gold medal for using roids, but you cant take away an endorsement deal or make them pay you back the $100 million salary.
ok, back to my regular saturday wow playing.

Now that the report is done, I hope the players union will allow for real testing with real penalties, so the game in 10 years will continue to resemble in some fashion the game that Ruth, Williams, and Yaz played.

The fact that players are juicing isn't surprising; I just cant believe that it had to come to this for this problem to get noticed. I think it will be next to impossible to punish those involved, so baseball just needs to move on and put some money into finding an HGH test.
If I were a bad demoman, I wouldn't be sitting here dicussing it with you, now would I?

No one has posted this it seems, but via Yahoo, Andy Pettite admits to taking HGH in 2002.

There's a whole world of difference between steroids and HGH. I wouldn't be surprised to see HGH become a widely accepted practice sometime in the future.

As I understand it, HGH promotes healing more than growth. But I still think it should not become an accepted practice.

What's funny is the public perception that this is a relatively recent occurrence. Man I think this has been going on for awhile since the 80's.
In the MPLS paper the other day they talk with Jim Kaat who was a Twins announcer back then and he remembers a conversation with Puck and Shane Mack of the Twins and he remembers asking how some guy got so big. And Puck and Mack would tell him that guy is juicing.
Also in my high school back in the late 80s there were guys that juiced. This crowd showed up after summer and suddenly they would have these wide bodies. Not natural. No proof, but the rumor mill was they all juiced.
yeah, i just found out my alma mater now tests for steroid use as well. it saddens me.
