UT3 and YOU!

Greetings all,

I was just catching up on some podcasts last night, and took note of the UT3 comments made on the GWJ Conference Call (Dec 5, I believe). I'm a long-time listener, and this finally gave me the gumption to sign up on the forum.

UT3 is indeed a big game -- big in the sense that there is a lot of variety out of the box, and a huge mod community who will put out new content for years to come. It can be intimidating to get started in a multiplayer game with such an established community. But it doesn't have to be! For folks who want to find a helpful & friendly place to learn the game, I am currently adminning (is that a word?) a UT3 server for a group of friends at 8.6.74.236:7777. Feel free to hop on & goof around. It's currently public ... it may go private from time to time, but if it does, I'll PM you a password if you ask.

Same group of people still congregates for Thursday evening UT2004 Onslaught games at 66.55.146.211:7777, if folks are interested in re-experiencing that legendary legacy.

Fun only. Griefers & hacksters need not apply. I believe the gamer-ideals (Spielgeist?) of the GWJ community fit those of the people who frequent these servers, so feel free to come visit!

Awesome, thanks for the invite Torgo! There are a few of us here who are liking UT3 a lot, but a critical mass of GWJer players doesn't yet exist for things like scheduled events. Sounds like your community might be just the ticket.

I fear playing this game with people who still play UT2k4 after all this time.

My twitch skills in games like this have never quite been up to par.

Sorry mate...my Linux PC won't run this at a decent frame rate, so I am waiting for the 360 version. See you in the XBLA blades!

Apparently, the OSX version of UT3 will be out before the 360 version. In what bizzaro business decision universe that makes sense, I have no idea, but that's what I'm hearing.

It's no secret that Epic desires to have user-made content on both console versions (as they have already succeeded at bringing to the PS3 version), and it's also no secret that Microsoft has been incredibly tentative to allow these things to happen.

It's a good bet that that has much more to do with this situation than any backwards "get the OSX version out first" thinking.

Don't forget there's that long, arduous, and possibly arbitrary certification process to release anything onto consoles. Releasing for OSX just means getting it out the door.

I'd also assume that Ryan Gordon is doing the OS X port (he's done all the Linux and Mac ports of UT in the past, and did the linux server for UT3), and that he has nothing to do with the xbox port.

I don't buy that argument. Anything that Microsoft does not want happening on the 360, or their servers, can easily be shut down server side. And that really has nothing to do with getting the game out the door and on the shelves for the 360. They could release the game, then haggle about user generated content, as they are with Sony and the PS3.

I've been wondering where the GWJers were on this game.

Welcome to the OP, btw. A suggestion: list your UT2k4 event on the calendar, you might get some takers. And use the GWJ Ventrilo server for those games.
