I recently learned about an application to browse the web with the DS, I know this is probably old news to most of you...but has anyone here tried it out? Is it any good? Can you get porn? (Just wondering so I could keep it away from my kids.....really)

Also, on another note, has anyone ever tried to fix their upper screen? My sons is broke and I was/am going to attempt a repair. Anyone have any experience out there? Thanks!

I have it, it works great for porn...really.

Actually, I have never been able to get it to work from any hotspot because it can't get past the "terms of use" screen for the hotspot. I haven't tried it at home because my router is using WPA, the DS connects with WEP. There is a hotspot locator if you want to see where you can connect. And no, I haven't used it for porn, it does have content filtering that you can use.

short version: the browser works. let's just leave it at that.

longer version: it doesn't work very well. I mean, it's better than NOTHING... it doesn't have flash or java, so browsing a lot of "web 2.0-ish" sites isn't going to work... but simple, text heavy sites will be pretty solid (I specifically made a lot of bookmarks to "mobile" sites like diggriver.com). You can try to load the regular web pages, but the big drawback here is that it can take 1-2 minutes or more to load a single page if there are lots of images.

It does allow for text input, though, so in that respect it's better than some other mobile browsers.

Honestly, if given the choice, I will use my PSP browser over the DS browser. YMMV.

http://www.google.com/gwt/n -- it is like Skweezer-- it takes any website and shrinks it down to a small-browser friendly version.

Google has a dedicated page for gmail on a small browser, and yahoo! has a small version as well, although they seem to have it burried pretty dang deep... try this, though:

http://us.m.yahoo.com/

gives you access to mail, calendar, address book, flickr, a few lame games, driving directions, news, movies, etc.

I personally wouldn't consider the purchase unless you can get it for under $10 -- and then only for emergency web browsing (gmail works fine). The DS browser is based on Opera, which I love in its big brother variants but the DS simply doesn't have enough memory (even with the expansion card, which the browser ships with) to handle web sites with anything resembling usability. Even graphics-lite sites like GWJ can take a good minute to load, and scrolling within websites can leave you with long pauses between refreshes. It does ship with an optional content filter service, though, and the browser is remarkably capable for a product limited in so many other ways (renders gmail fine). Personally I've found use for it as an ebook reader on Project Gutenberg, but other than that it'll likely never get used unless I'm for some reason going somewhere where a laptop would be unwieldy and there's a hotspot (read: never).

I have. But only because there's just something deliciously ironic about seeing boobies on a Nintendo console.
