A Note On Ads
I don't usually get specific about our ads, but they are served to us through a third-party company that sells advertising for small sites like ours. We are not part of the process in deciding which ads we receive, aside for indicating some very broad parameters. I bring this up today because I see Eidos has bought ad space for Kane & Lynch, and that we were being served those ads.
Now, compared to other ads we serve, the K&L ads are paying 6 or 7 times the normal amount just for page impressions - you don't even have to click on them - and the fact is we stood to make a decent cut of money from running these ads, but frankly the very suspect marketing efforts of Eidos, including their blatant distortion of review scores in their recent ad campaign, leaves me inclined to not be associated with their products at this time, so I'm disabling them.
I wouldn't bring it up, but apparently the ads have been running since yesterday, and I wanted to explain and be transparent for those of you who may have been fed a K&L ad on this site. I think it's understood in general that ads from our third-party vendor should not be seen as endorsement from GWJ, but a necessary evil that helps us pay the day-to-day bills, but the K&L fiasco has left a serious distaste in my mouth and I want no part of the money from their game right now. I look forward to Eidos making better marketing decisions in the future.

Hence why Gamers With Jobs is my absolute fav-ou-rite site on the interwebs.
For the record, I never saw any of the Kane and Lynch ads myself.

This wasn't a big deal at all to me. (Adblock made it a non-issue.) But thanks for sweating the minor details, that sort of thing has a tremendous cumulative effect on the overall quality of Goodgerdom.

I don't disagree strongly enough with this particular decision to countermand it, but as a general rule I have no problem taking money from large corporations who want to advertise on the Tribal Fusion ad service. Even the stupid ones ... or maybe especially the stupid ones. Nearly every publisher has pulled some underhanded, slimy move in their zeal to move product, I don't see why we give Eidos special consideration because they happen to have made the latest, most noticeable gaffe.
If our editorial content is truly seperate from our ad space (given that we don't arrange the ads ourselves and receive no special consideration, it is) then it doesn't matter, from an integrity standpoint, how we feel about Puzzle Pirates, Eve Online, Classmates.com or Kane & Lynch. If they pay well, then we take the money from Tribal Fusion and carry on as we always do. Pulling these ads is an emotional decision and a soapbox statement rather than a logical move to operate with more integrity. Our integrity is WHY we can have game ads on the site and continue speaking our minds on the front page and the podcast. The trust of our readers and listeners is not something we enjoy despite the ads on the page. As far as I'm concerned, they're irrelevant.
I understand why this decision was made and I don't really mind because I'll take a happy Elysium over a few extra bucks any day.

Any marketing department worth its salt is going to track where hits to their ads are coming from. Wouldn't it make more of a statement and help Eidos make better marketing decisions by having a link on a gaming website, yet receive few hits from it? Maybe Elysium's decision makes the same point to Eidos, but GWJ is poorer for it"…monetarily speaking.
I blame the eggnog.

Plus the thought of taking their money and giving them nothing for it (no purchases) is compelling.

Well I was fed a Kane & Lynch ad yesterday, and took it as tacit approval of the game by GWJ.
Also, I have four legs and am covered in wool. Baa!
Silliness aside, I agree with Certis. If GWJ has the kind of complete advertising/editorial separation that GameSpot allegedly failed to maintain, there's no reason to even acknowledge the ad. (And I say "if" purely as if-then logic, not to question the validity of the statement).
Eidos fumbles aside, it's still just an ad for a video game.

I think they'd probably just interpret it as the site just not being a good advertising spot, whereas a gaming site rejecting the ad completely would send an obvious one.
Pardon me if this has been dealt with previously and I wasn't around at the time to partake in it, but did you ever gloat about your success? Gamers With Jobs Radio, Episode 14, you made a bet that the Wii would outsell the PS3 and Certis mocked you for it.
