The TechTV Story
I've resisted writing about this for over five years now. Largely because it was a dreadfully miserable experience for me and it's taken close to a decade to wash the taste out of my mouth and get enough of a perspective on the thing to do it justice. I'm not sure I'm there yet, but I decided to write about it anyway, so here it is.
Considering how generous and supportive this community has been for me over the years, and how often some of you have asked me to explain what happened over there, I thought y'all might be more interested than most in reading the proper account. I'll be putting the story up in installments over the next week or so at falsegravity.com. Parts One and Two are already up. Part three should go up tomorrow.
I'm not running any ads at the site, nor will I be seeking donations or anything of that nature. This is just something I felt the need to share with whoever is interested. So ... enjoy!
EDIT: Changed the link to go to the official page for these stories.

Terrific, Fletch. Yours is a tale that deserves telling. Of course, that's true of all your tales, since ipso facto, you are the one who tells them.
Edit: The long tradition holds: I am your first post. You might say I follow in your timestamps.

Techtv was 256 on Cox cable in Oklahoma and I used to watch.
When I was 13, I used to watch the screensavers everyday and looked forward to it.
Screensavers was my intro into the fact that there where other people who thought what I was cool was cool.
I remember Sarah and Kevin Rose(not that tool Perera) and their antics.
You have my support.
I throw curses to the 4 winds against that which is called g4.

I miss TechTV. Nice to finally get the back story. Any chance of a guest appearance on GWJ CC?

I am eagerly awaiting the next installment. Also my curiosity is very much peaked on what exactly your letter to the company said and perhaps just to see "Eagle Semen" in it's true context. I remember ZDTV and the beginning of TechTV as well. I do miss it. Screen Savers and Robot Wars were probably my two favorite shows on TechTV.

In the last thread we had about harsh resignation letters, Fletch asked no one to post his letter, and since he has yet to revoke that, I'll wait until either he posts it (which I think would make a decent last installment), or he gives the OK. However, if your GoogleFu is strong, it's not exactly hard to find.
I hate to sound a bit sadistic, but great story so far. It's almost like reading a Grimm's Fairy Tale that's tailored for us geeks. Patiently awaiting the next installment.

I'm looking forward to checking this out. It's interesting that you post it now as some of the more recent TWiT podcasts and Tekzilla episodes have also made some pretty big jabs at TechTV and Paul Allen. It seems a lot of people are now starting to talk about it.

I wasn't aware Leo had started talking about it all. I'll check that out. Maybe it's just one of those things where "enough time has passed." Perhaps this also means we'll find out who killed Kennedy.
Part three is up. Also, to answer the most important question, yes, you will get to read the full text of "the email" at some point. I may even throw in my original first draft if I can find it.

Really enjoying it Fletch. It's odd to be reading about someone else's experience of that period, at the same time I was doing the dotcom thing south-of-market. What an crazy insane time it was. In many ways I feel a bit like it was our generations "war" - the set of seminal defining events.
I can't wait to read the rest of it.

My only complaint is that I wish these were longer
I guess I found TechTV shortly after getting one of the first digital cable boxes in the area. When I first started watching, TSS was 90 minutes, so you really had to be into the show to spend that much time/every day watching it. I was a geek, but not all that knowledgeable, and TSS was where I first heard about "crazy" stuff like Linux.
Definitely a shame what happened. Still, it was pretty glorious while it lasted.

I wouldn't say he's talking about it so much as he has made a few stabs at Paul Allen, calling TechTV "one of his little hobbies", clearly with a bitter tone in his voice and obviously feeling as though Allen really didn't care much what he did to the people who worked so hard to operate the place. It's funny watching Tekzilla or almost anything on Revision3 as well now as pretty much that entire company is staffed by ex-TechTV people. I'm really enjoying the story so far. I actually got digital cable at one point just to get TechTV and it was such an amazing experience. I had finally found something on TV that catered to my interests for real and not just in a glossed-over marketing way. I was heartbroken but also not surprised to hear that G4 had taken over and about two months after they got their hands things, I cancelled digital cable again. What that channel is today is laughable and that it drove away almost the entire staff and gets far lower ratings than TechTV did even at the bottom end says it all I think. I hope that one day, something like Revision3 will be able to reach that level of experience again.

Wonderful stuff, Fletch. I remember the old Screen Savers days and you definitely should be proud of the show back then. I remember learning the basics of 802.11b from a segment from that time. When they announced the name change, I definitely saw the writing on the wall and then Kevin Rose left, basically sealing the deal for me. It's now a MySpace and Youtube catered show with little to no "tech" content left. Sad days.

Wow. I remember watching TSS back when I was in High School on ZDTV when Kate and Leo hosted it. I remember vaguely when Patrick took over her slot, and was a bit miffed, but that was quickly soothed by his manhandling of a 16lb sledgehammer. Later on, the UtiliKilt sealed the deal.
I even seem to recall, somewhere in the corner of my memory, you Fletch, on the set, cowboy hat and all a time or two.
So, all in all, my condolences on how this all sorted out. It was pretty sucktastic, from what I've heard from Leo, and now yourself. It does fill in a lot of the gaps, and makes a lot more clear.

I was first introduced to The Screen Savers in my Auto CAD class in high school. We would watch a clip from it every day before starting on our two hours of work. I remember looking forward to the show every day, but not really understand exactly what it was or what it did since it was still very early in my nerd days.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
Just the once with the cowboy hat. That was my last day there.

What a great series of articles. I loved The Screensavers, and watched it consistently. In fact, 354 was always the first channel I tuned to upon arriving home from work and turning the TV and DSS receiver on. (Leo: "354 for Computers and More!") Always remembered that for some reason.
Thanks for writing this, Fletch. I always loved the show and I am interested in reading how things happened.

I used to LOVE The Screen Savers back in the Leo/Kate days. I was back in highschool then and watched it every day. I first really heard about Linux from the show and tried out distributions based on Leo and Kate's advice. Such a good show. I liked Patrick Norton enough, but I totally stopped watching by the time that Leo left and thats was it for me.

Really good stuff Fletch. I'm amazed at how well you capture it all so long after the experience. I wish I was as coherent and enticing about relating my past experiences business implosions (e.g. Enron). Although I guess the letter is such a polarizing document it gives a good foundation to start.

Actually, it was a thumbnail preview that Photoshop generates. The thumbnail is not updated when doing minor edits (like a simple crop), so while the boobies were cropped out of the main picture, they remained in the thumbnail, which people extracted out.
If you search for "Cat Schwartz" on Google, the second hit tells the story and reveals all.

Eh, I never knew about TechTV, but this story is pretty good.
I'm going to wait until all chapters are up because I hate cliffhangers, but the 3 introductory articles are really good. You should be, like, a writer or something.

Never knew you were the producer for TSS. You did a hell of a job. Or your talent was very good at covering for you. . .
Television definitely entices with its promises of celebrity and chic. It then swallows your soul.
I wish I had this job before it could steal my wife's affection and my child's bedtimes from me.
