Guild Wars: a couple questions

So, I just recently got the main game from Amazon when they had it for $10, but I haven't installed it yet, nor have I even opened the packaging. Mainly, I'm waiting until X-mas, as I also bought a copy for my brother-in-law so that we can group together in-game. But, as I understand it, GW is heavily geared towards co-operative play, moreso than many of the other games I've played. So who else would be willing to join up with us once we get started? Is there a GWJ guild that I/we should join?

Also, I'm still debating what profession to choose. I'm leaning towards Ranger, possibly with Necromancer as a secondary, but I'm still on the fence either way. Typically, I go solo a lot in MMOs, but is a Ranger suitable for that kind of thing in GW?

Is there anything else that I should know before I start up? It's been a while since I played an MMO, and all of the ones I've played have been paltry ones that I played for maybe a day to a week, a couple months in a very few cases.

As far as guilds go, last I heard Dr. J was the leader of the official GWJ guild. I don't think it's very active but someone in the guild will have to confirm. A few of GWJers are SBDers (www.sbdguild.com), but we haven't been as active recently, though some of us are gradually getting back into it.

Just so you are aware, a lot of the heavy GW players have slowed down with GW2 on the horizon. GW2 will have a very limited ability to inherit things from GW characters. So, many GW players are taking it easy these days, and just focusing their play on fewer characters.

So, my point is that, while it's a great game, it's kinda past its heyday. There are still a decent amount of folks logging on, though. I'll be on here and there over the next few months, as will Lobster and some others.

If you open it around Christmas, you'll be starting during the 2007 Wintersday festival.

As for profession choice, the only things you can't change about your character at some point is your primary profession, your name and your appearance (other than changing what you wear). Very early you will choose a secondary profession, and you can choose those skills to complement your primary profession. My first character was a Ranger/Necro, and it was a fun character. Currently, I'm playing a Necro/Monk (minion master).

About 40% of the way through a chapter, you will be able to switch your secondary profession. So don't sweat your choice too much. GW is about playing around with different builds and skill combos to suit the challenges of a particular instance.

Note that if you enjoy the game, I would strongly recommend adding the Nightfall chapter before too long. Nightfall added heros (customizable henchmen) and far better controls over henchmen and heros. Those controls will make soloing and duoing with your friend much easier. Alternately, you two will need to learn to do the "henchmen dance" to keep the henchmen in place while you go pull a group of monsters to kill during instance runs.

Just to add to DevilStick's comments, you can approach class selection as "hey, this class is really neat, I think I'll play it, and hey, this other class is pretty cool, I think I'll take it as a secondary," but as you get deeper into the game you'll move away from that mentality. Instead you'll think, "I want to play this class, which has all these weaknesses that can be mitigated by taking this other class as a secondary," or even, "I want to play this class and this other class has lots of skills that work very nicely with the first class." Like with a collectable card game, you really only start to get this feeling once you're familiar enough with all classes as to understand what each is capable of and how skills interact with one another. Eventually you'll start a character and know which two classes you want for that character, and you'll make a conscious decision on which to make your primary based on the subtle advantages that grants.

For instance, a Ranger/Warrior might sound like a cool Legolas-type character, but you'll find that the two don't mesh very well since rangers use mostly bow and pet attacks while warriors are all about using melee weapons. If you focus on the former your warrior skills won't help you much and if you focus on the latter you'll suffer for the Ranger's lower maximum armor class.

However, Rangers also have a number of skills that summon things called "spirits." Ritualists are all about summoning and manipulating spirits, so you'll find that a Ritualist/Ranger or Ranger/Ritualist will have some interesting combinations.

Check out this wiki for lots of info.

Just to build on Lobster's example, some other Ranger/* combos include:

Ranger/Mesmer - particularly strong on interrupting and disrupting enemies. For example, you could effectively lock down an enemy healer to make the work of your team that much easier.

Ranger/Necro - could use Necro debuffs to weaken enemies while calling targets. While not the strongest minion master, I used to build up a small army of minions to complement my pet.

Ranger/Monk - fairly common to see folks use this, though really the monk skills just give you a boost on healing and resurrecting. I always preferred R/N or R/Me

Ranger/Elementalist - not commonly used. The cool Ele skills are mana intensive, and Rangers have a limited mana pool. Only warriors have less mana.

Ranger/Warrior - some folks use this as a running build.

Ranger/Paragon - I've not tried this, but I imagine the Paragon buffs would complement being a ranger.

Just to add even more to both comments, GW is VERY solo friendly. I finished all 3 campaigns by myself and just needed some help on a couple hard missions that my heroes/henchmen were not smart enough to get through it. And like DevilStick said, get Nightfall as soon as you can if you really like GW. It will give you access to Heroes that are a lot more helpful than the regular henchmen that you find in other campaigns, because you can customize their armor, skills, weapons and attributes.

GW is all about messing with different skill builds for specific challenges you are about to face. And you are not penalized by redoing all your character's (or your heroes) attribute points or skills used. Whenever you are in a town, you can rearrange the whole thing anytime, without any cost to it. I love that aspect of the game!

I'm also in SBD guild with DS and Lobster, but I'm on a hiatus and planning to get back to it in a couple weeks, when my work hours get back to normal.

FYI - the game has a templates system, which makes switching between specs/builds while in towns much easier.

I would like to get back into the PvE parts of GW. I mostly play in the Random Arena. If anybody wants to group to play through Nightfall or Eye of the North let me know. I realize I could probably finish it with heroes but I like the idea of grouping with people although I seem to hate most people in online games.

Hi all,

I'm a GWJ noob, but have been playing GW for a couple of years. Holler at me in-game if you need a partner for a mission, a 4th for an alliance battle (Luxon), etc. dhelor, if you want a guide at any point, holler!

More than any other toon, I play as a monk: "Slurm Babe". For the next week or so, I'm more likely to be online as "Slurms Mackenzie".

Okay, now my brother-in-law has his copy, I've gotten back into the game. My character is Dhelor Aqari (Ranger/Necromancer), his is Kissa Isranon (Necromancer/Mesmer). I'm at level 7, he's level 5.

Big question - where's all the holiday stuff? Is that only available "Post-Searing" (whatever that means)?

Post-Searing is essentially "after the tutorial" ... after you enter the Academy. Most (maybe all) of the holiday stuff is post-Searing (along with most of the other content).

absurddoctor is correct. I usually took my Prophecies characters through the Academy at around L6, so you're probably going to start running out of quests soon. (Note that you can't go back to pre-Searing once you go through.)

In any event, the process of going through the Searing to the "real" game takes about 30-45 minutes. You'll end up in post-Searing Ascalon. Post-Searing Ascalon will be decorated and you'll be able to turn in special holiday drops for holidays gifts, like DP reducing candy canes.

Just a note - the holiday hats are given out on Jan 1 in Lion's Arch at a special New Year's day event with fireworks, gifts, etc. (There's also an event in the Nightfall town of Kamadan.) To get there by Jan 1 you'll probably need someone to run you. The run takes about 45 minutes. If you don't care about hats then don't worry about it. I don't think the run is expensive.

Due to holiday/New Year's stuff I won't be online much before then, but maybe someone on the forums can give you a run.

Maybe we could connect online for a few minutes and I can hook you up with some gear and a little money to pay for the run though. PM me.

It's actually pretty time consuming to get to the main city in Prophecies (Lion's Arch), which is where the holiday stuff takes place. It's a lot easier to get there as a Factions character (just finish up the 'tutorial' area on Shing Jea Island and then you can walk to the docks and take a boat to Lion's Arch. The other main city, Kamadan, is extremely easy to get to. A new Nightfall character will get there in about 10 minutes. For some reason, Factions' main city of Kaineng doesn't get much attention. Factions in general gets the shaft despite it being the coolest setting.

Ugh, yeah. I think I am going to need some help getting to Lion's Arch. I've gotten as far as Yak's Bend, but not without a good deal of dying and respawning. If not for my henchmen, I might not have gotten anywhere. Didn't help that I got turned around and spent almost an hour trying to go through Dragon's Gullet before checking the map I downloaded and finding out, whoops! That area's a dead-end. Grr.

So, if someone wants to meet me in Yak's Bend tomorrow to help me out, I'd be greatly appreciative.

EDIT: Good news! I managed to make it to Lion's Arch on my own. Well, with a little help from my henchmen, but that hardly counts, does it? Built myself up to level 11 in the process as well.

Nice. But for getting hats and seeing the fireworks, I'd have told you to take your time.

In any event, here's a page with detailed info on the Wintersday event. It includes a schedule for the finales (the celebrations where they give out hats). It's basically every three hours on Jan 1 (PST).

They also have some festival quests you can do to earn things like peppermint/gingerbread weapons. Note that for a ranger at your level, a candycane bow is not a bad bow since it's a 15-15 damage bow. (No level requirement.)

Oh, dhelor, one thing I should mention before I forget. Pretty soon you'll start acquiring trapping skills. Once I finished the storyline missions, one of my favorite things to do as a ranger was to get a group of 4-5 rangers together, with maybe a healer, and go aataxe trapping in the Underworld.

Aataxes are basically big bull like creatures that do a massive amount of melee damage, but they can drop globs of ectoplasm (valuable crafting drop).

The aataxes can kill in one or two shots, but in these groups you basically have four or five rangers setting four or five traps each in a tight area (like a staircase), and luring the aataxes across the traps. Utter hilarity when the aataxes hit the traps.

But, every now and again one will get through the traps and everyone would scatter for their lives. Comedy gold even in failure.

I just started a new character, an EleMonk. I'm liking how that works a bit better than my RangOmancer. I hardly use any of the Necro skills, though I do like Putrid Explosion.

EleMonk is a nice combination. FWIW, the necro skills feel weak early on but get more powerful in the mid to late game.

Obviously, play what you enjoy. You'll find that in most cases it works best to mostly use skills from your primary class, supplementing with maybe a skill or two from your secondary.

Remember that it's best to put your attribute points in one or two attributes, and focus on skills from those lines. So, for your necro skills to be effective, you'll want to have devoted some points to the corresponding attribute.

Maybe you've figured that out already, but in my early GW days I was evenly distributing my attribute points, which doesn't work as well.

Guild Wars is great! It's everything WoW wasn't for me. It's nice to be able to log on for an hour and get somewhere, instead of wasting all of my time just walking from one place to another. No insipid "collect X thingamabobers" quests yet. I don't understand how anyone can play WoW and not be bored to stone cold death.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I think it's a great game. It strikes a different balance than most true MMOs (WoW is one, but LOTRO and others are in this category as well), which struck a chord with me as well.

I'm still playing, but sporadically. I figure I have a lot of time to finish EOTN before GW2 comes out. I think Lobster and others log on from time to time.

If you want a guild invite, post a character name. The main utility at this point would be to have access to the guild hall. (All the NPCs a button away.) Someday maybe we'll start doing runs again.

If you need anything, let me or Lobster know.

That's what I ask myself sometimes... I hated those "collect 10 Boar Hearts" kind of quests. You have to kill 100 Boars to get 10 hearts. WTF! Questing in GW and traveling around is so damn fast that I can't go back to WoW and other similar games. I have a bunch of old time friends back to WoW and I really tried to get back, but the excessive walk around and all the time spent on "Collect Quests" are just too much for me.

I second that I was actually surprised at the plot depth in Guild Wars. I expected the PvE game to simply be a primer for PvP and it isn't at all. Still busy with other games, but I'll be back to GW eventually.

Oh, and I'd love a guild invite. I've been solo 'til now mostly because no one I knew actually played GW, and I didn't feel like just joining a random guild. Main char's name is Sera Dane.
