Gamer Between Jobs
I just quit my job at Walmart. I could not take the condescending attitudes of my managers or their habit of finding something wrong with everything I did for one more minute. It's a good thing I didn't see any of them on my way out, or else I might have expelled some wordage from my noise-hole which would have only made things worse.
So now I'm going to start applying at various other places around here: Albertson's, Fred Meyer, Staples, some local book stores and restaurants, etc. Then, next year, we have a Ross and an Office Depot or a Home Depot (can't remember which), so there always that. I'm not, fortunately, in a situation where I am in desperate need of job, so I can go a while without one. But it was nice having some extra cash for a while.
Anybody got any suggestions for me? Any online jobs or work-from-home things I could do?

I went with a temp agency for a while. Easy clerical work that netted me about $13-$15 an hour. The problem, primarily, was inconsistent hours; you'd have work three days of one week and not a damned thing for the rest of the week and a good chunk of the next week. Still, as something to fill your time it's probably worth looking into, especially since you can simply say no to a job if it doesn't strike your fancy.
Now I work with my brother for his software development company despite having graduated college with a degree in Communications Studies. Go figure. Can't beat the commute though; wake up, walk three feet to chair, log onto computer.

Temp agency... that's a good idea. Thanks!

I was a member of this site for almost two years before even getting this job, so nyah. Nyah. Nyah.

If you want to make 45 and hour and can lift 50lbs above your head, come out to Oklahoma and I'll hook you up with a roughnecking job.

Here's your summons, we'll see you in Goodjer Court.
EDIT: I just noticed your profile says you've been a member for 2 years, 8 weeks. If you were here almost 2 years before even getting a job... pretty short job!

This is exactly why I didn't mention that I took this whole summer off between jobs.
I'm about ready to quit my PhD and do something like this. Too bad you're all the way out West.

I know there are roughnecking gigs out east, but you can get hired here because we still have a lot of deep oil and there's a new boom.

Silly Quintin. I'm clearly ignoring the section of the United States that the yanquis stole from Mexico for a measly $15million in 1848 in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and which clearly deserves to be returned to Mexican control in order to reform the mythical birthplace of the mexica people: Aztlán.

I looked into the chicano movement for a little while. I stopped when I decided that the ladies were not hot enough to make up for how obnoxious semi-militant protesters are.

Craigslist is also a place to look for potential 'work-from-home' projects.
Not sure if it is still the case, but a lot of smaller web hosting companies used to hire people to frontline their online ticket systems from home; you might be able to find postings for these on craigslist, or maybe webhostingtalk.com.
Its not work at home, but right now is a good time of year for a temporary job with a shipping company, if you're in good shape.
Be wary with temp agencies and the type of work they gave you. Back in the day when my full time job wasn't cutting it, I though I would pick up some extra work at the temp agency my now wife was working through. I was looking for data entry/clerical work, which I knew they had plenty of, and gave them a resume that focused on my abilities for such work. Unfortunately I failed to realize that I was the wrong gender for that type of work, and they kept throwing more 'manly' jobs my way.

Update: Apparently, my brother has been calling WM all day complaining about the way they treated me, including calling the corporate headquarters. This does not surprise me in the least, that's just how he is. The really funny thing is what my former dept. manager told him - that she'd given me two full weeks of training. Pure and utter bullsh*t. She didn't give me a single day of %$&^ing training. In fact, I didn't even see her but maybe twice within the first two weeks.
The first day I was on the floor, she wasn't even there. They had to have someone from grocery who used to work in frozen come and tell me what to do. After that, I had to figure everything out on my own. Fortunately, there was one guy in the meat dept. who gave me some help (he had previously worked in frozen as well). If it wasn't for him, I would have had no clue about some aspects of my job.

If you are in a situation where you don't have to have a job, you might take the time to work your way into something you might enjoy. Are there things you like to do that people might be convinced to pay you for? It really makes a world of difference.
