I Heart Supernatural (spoilers) -- Season 3 Finale (5/15/08)
I was a huge fan of THE X-FILES back in the day, and enjoyed the first 4 seasons of BUFFY:TVS, so I'm not sure why I never gave WB's/CW's SUPERNATURAL a shot. About a year ago I bought the first season on DVD from my local Goodwill store and It's been sitting on my shelf ever since. Being a teacher, I have my summers free, and even THAT wasn't enough to get me to watch the show before now.
Oh, you crazy writers strike! See what you make me do?
I realize this show is currently in its third season, so I'm really behind the times, but I just watched the first 12 episodes and I'm really digging it. It's definitely MOTW (monster of the week) material, but it's creepy enough and cool enough (so far) to hold my interest. One of the things I like about it is that it is a rare show that features two MALES in the leads. Think about it... when was the last time you've seen a show with two men as partners? LAW & ORDER started that way, but now, every single L&O has the same M/F partnerships (hell, even X-FILES did). Looking at their webpage, I see there are two "hot chicks" now on the team, so that might be out the window, but I guess I'll deal with that when I come to it.
Anyway, sorry if there's already a thread about this... I tried using the search function and couldn't find anything.

I think we tried starting a thread during the first season.
I've been watching the show off and one since it started and I'm caught up to the 7th show in the third season, and, I have to say I also heart Supernatural.
One thing I love about this show is that it takes the standard Scooby Doo format of ghost hunting and puts enough testosterone in it to always satisfy my ego-driven hyper-machismo.
So rarely does a show come along where I think the two young male actors are complete badasses, but this show does it every time.
I wish I had a Dean Winchester trapper keeper.

I guess this show is decent if you look at it from the "anything tastes good to a starving man" perspective. Otherwise it is some of the least original material to grace the television in a while... it's like season 1 of Buffy, basically, only minus the kicking.
This thread does not scale to my level.
I am a bit behind on the latest season but if you loved the 1st you are in for a real treat with the second season.
Its one of those shows that may not be the end all and be all of television but it is entertaining. The chemistry between the brothers and later the regular guest stars is perfect. Along with the cool factor of all the shows based on urban legends and campfire ghost stories makes me come back time and time again. The main plot for season two and the ending for lack of a better word was awesome.
and sorry it is better than buffy but that's my opinion
Ah, what would any thread be without the classic Shihonage "meh" comment?
It's like Buffy, yet without all the ridiculous crap that spewed forth in seasons 4-7. It's like X-Files, without the goofy "black oil that seemed cool but eventually led nowhere plot." It's like Scooby-Doo, without the stoners, chicks, and ascots
To me, it's the TV equivalent to a kind of cool Dark Matter/CoC/Chill/Delta Green campaign.

Oh and who can say the music arrangement for the show is anything short of perfect?
I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but it's refreshing to see a show go for a classic rock/metal sort of soundtrack. Just got done watching FAITH and enjoyed the (rather obvious) BOC selection...

well I have to say I totally disagree, and I think your totally wrong with that comment,
Honestly it's one of the shows I really enjoy, there's just something about it but it does remind me alot of buffy and the x-files though, I think it's a great show that's especially hitting it's stride in the second and third seasons.

Don't panic! So far, the said hot chicks are definitely not on the team. Both have caused at least as much grief to the Winchesters as they have prevented. I was worried when I heard about it, but so far it's all good.
The show is pretty great. Its a throwback, unabashed about it, playing with straight up old fashion heroism coupled with a few extra layers that modernity has furnished us with. It has its hits and misses (god I hated that "Trickster " episode), but it shoots pretty straight for something that's drawn from the hip. Did that metaphor even make sense?

My wife and I have been with the show since the first episode, and it is one of the few shows that we rush to the DVR to watch. I love the chemistry between the brothers. There is enough bickering and smart-assery to make you believe that they really are brothers. I'll admit that it's far from the greatest writing, but it is solid enough and entertaining enough to make the show quite enjoyable. As it's been said, the show's take on urban legends and classic movie monsters is well done, even if it's not exactly original. The current season features an episode that deals with the seven deadly sins that was a lot of fun. If you liked the first season, I think you will be quite pleased with what follows.
Oh, and count me in as a big fan of the soundtrack. I lurves me some classic rock.

Wasn't much a fan of the Sins episode--but the one that followed, with the kids, that was great television.

Agreed, being brothers puts just enough of a different angle on the "buddy cop" formula to make it fresh.

I too love this show (btw is the show in its Hiatus stage right now for the winter or something?) I esp. love the eps. where Six (cylon from BSG) was in it. That one was very moving and made me weep like a little girl

Oh, and one of my favorite episodes to date is in the third season when the boys keep trying to get back a magic rabbit's foot that gives you unlimited good luck when you have it, but if you lose it your luck is so bad that you are inches from death every minute. I laughed out loud for most of that episode.

The only thing I know about Supernatural is that there's a ginormous amount of slashfic about the brothers. (shudder) Bad Internet! Bad!
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

This is one of the few shows that I never miss a episode thanks to DVR. One of the best things about it is the special effects for the most part are top notch. As much as this show is a Monster of the Week show it does have a continual progressing story. I kept wanting to say stuff, but realized that I would be ruining a lot of the story.

I was commenting about your comment(s)... wasn't intended as a personal attack. A smiley would have been appropriate.
good to hear. I guess I'll try and track down the season 2 set after finishing season one in the next week or two. Just out of curiosity, has there been any shift in tone or quality since the show moved networks?
Well, you know the TV/Movie writers are on strike, right?
Yeah, that's is very scary. Never understood the appeal or why so many women seem to enjoy this kind of thing.

Indeed, the Colt was one of the greatest plot devices ever in a television show.
I need to get back into it, I haven't seen any of Season 3 and I think I missed some episodes in Season 2.

Your comment's scope went beyond my reply in this thread, and into a condescending reflection on my implied "posting habits". It is clearly implied that said "habits" influence my posting rather than me addressing each post on its own merits, and thus my opinion carries little value - your retroactively applied smiley face nonwithstanding.
I really wish people would stop doing that, or at least have the decency to drop it when it is pointed out to them.
Move along, thread... nothing to see here.

Nope. If anything, I thought the second season had more consistent quality than the first.

I too am a fan of Supernatural. I don't get a chance to watch it on TV, but have watched the first two seasons via Netflix. Very cool episodic thing going on with a slow-widening of the world in which the two protagonists live (finding out more about their own kind, etc). I look forward to season 3 when it finally appears on DVD. I enjoy the campiness of it as well as the fact it seems very loosely based off of the old WoD roleplaying game, Hunter: The Reckoning.

I admit I shouldn't have "generalized," as long as you'll admit that posting a rather glibly dismissive comment in a loverade thread is going to come off as somewhat abrasive. You might feel you're only "commenting on the show," but it didn't come off that way. Did I dismiss your opinion? Not sure. I know you're an articulate person, yet that initial post didn't seem to have much to say beyond "it sucks."

Yay, glad to see I'm not alone in liking this (nothing has been said about it in a while). The rabbit's foot episode was good. I like all the subtle "easter egg" touches that are put in, for example in the Crossroads episode, where the hellhounds were punching soul-debtors' tickets, when they went to one house to save a guy there was a small sign on the fence that said "Beware of Dog". I also like to see if I can get all the alias jokes that Dean uses.
Now if you'll excuse me I've gotta go write some fanfic.

I compared it to the first season of Buffy. Your praise of the show amounted mostly to it "having two dudes in the main roles", and being "creepy" and "cool". Face it, we're on pretty even ground when it comes to being articulate there. You may see my negativity as unreasonably dismissive just as I may see your positivity as, let's just say... unwarranted.
In the end it is a difference of opinion and everything would've been just fine if you've let it remain that instead of trying to find fault with the way I express mine. It's still not too late to stop, you know.

Uh huh. If you've got nothing more to add to the actual thread topic, how about you follow your own advice and "move along, please"?

I've sort of hit the brakes on season one the last few weeks... I still have about 5 or so episodes left to go, but hopefully I'll catch up with the rest of them this weekend or next.
One thing that's sort of started to slightly bother me is that the overarching meta-plot of the show is veering dangerously close to "Charmed" territory:
All right. A bit of whinging I guess, but nothing too serious.
