Quake Wars not really dead (EDIT).
Saturday, December 1st, 2007 - 5:30am
Looks like 1.2 patch killed the game for good. So much for quality assurance and not fixing what wasn't broken.
They broke the server filter which allows to hide servers with bots - it doesn't work anymore, which makes finding a server frustrating. The game crashes upon joining a server, for many Nvidia and ATI users. If it doesn't crash then, then it crashes after you exit it.
1.2 was supposed to bring improvements... instead it destabilized the executable and got rid of a lot of players - and there weren't that many of us to start with. There's practically nobody online, at least on my end.
Sad.

TF2 killed Quake Wars for me before it even launched, but bummer to fans of the series. That's inexcusable.

Wow, that's shocking. I wasn't a fan of the game, didn't like the demo that much. But there were enough people getting scratched by it. But doing something so stupid is just beyond me. Sad times.
I don't watch, I interact!
That really sucks, I just have this to be shipped to me because I found it for a fairly cheap price, I was hoping it would have a decent amount of people online, o well hopefully I can still get into some games once i get it especially if they fix it fast enough which they should hopefully

I'd say TF2 was one of two factors. It certainly grabbed everyone's attention - and, hey, how many MP shooters do you really focus on at a time? Especially if the console people are likely to get Halo 3, too?
Factor #2 was the beta version of the game itself. I know a number of people, Wolfenstein: ET fans among them, who were turned off by what they got to play in the beta test. It somehow didn't appeal to them. The TF2 beta was exactly the opposite of that. Every forum was buzzing with excitement and people were trying to convince other people to join.
Even if not every Steam user here plays TF2 - the size of the GWJ group is a testament to how well it worked.
Strange, I haven't noticed any of these issues. There are always many quality servers in my list, some that I have been playing on since launch. I also like the voice chat functionality they added in 1.2.

There'll be a bump in population around Christmas time, I imagine. Too bad about that patch though.

I hope they get this sorted out. This is a game I was looking forward to returning to.

That's a shame. I really enjoyed playing this game, but it's been pushed out by a lot of single player games that came out since.
I'm like a flashing lightning and a rolling thunder, I'm like a stepping razor
That's a good point. Playing the beta did deflate my interest level some.
Of course, in fairness, it should be pointed out that the TF2 "beta" was the early release of a 99.9% finished product rather than a true beta. It's one of the flimsiest uses of the phrase "beta" since whatever the last thing Google called a beta was.

It looks like it's doing okay to me.
I have the game through Steam and there is currently a Steam-specific issue affecting a number of users that won't let the game launch, so I have it on hold right now. However, I plan on returning as well. I was able to play 1.2 for a day or two and the server browser seemed to work fine for me.

No problems here either.. both on my Nvidia and ATI systems..

I play on a private invite only server though.. so bots and pub nonsense means little to me..lots of the old school ET guys are playing and we love it.
Are games on that list for HL and HL2 essentially CS and TF2 etc??

It's odd that CoD4 is not on the list. Also, looking down the list it seems like some games never die. BF2's demo still has 478 players? Buy the game, you cheap bastards, says I. It's down to about $10.
Agreed, I was so looking forward to this game and got turned off by the demo. Decided give it a bit of time - hope things get turned around!

I didn't realize BF2 was still going so strong. I may have to reinstall it.
Also: UT2k4 and the original UT are besting UT3. Ouch!

I really tried to like this game, but I just end up playing TF2. I loved WolfET but QW doesn't hit the same nerve with me.
My big whine is that I really hate the long range snipers on some of the maps. I absolutely hate getting sniped in the head from 10 miles away five seconds after spawning. It makes me want to uninstall the game. I admit I never like snipers in any game and I suck at it myself, but there is something that absolutely drives me nuts about it in this game.
The other thing is the controls and movement, they just feels clumsy to me for some reason. I've played with the settings, but it feels like there is a lag between the screen and the mouse and keyboard.
Supposedly they improved that aspect in 1.2 patch so that you can actually SEE the damn smoke/railgun trails after a sniper shoots you.
Of course I wouldn't know since I'm one of the people who can't run it short of trying something really unsavory and I'm just not into renaming my game executables these days.
Not that surprising, IMO - both titles are quite established in the multiplayer scene and have avid fans. And there are way more PCs out there that still can run those oldies. UT3 - not so much.
Yeah, ultimately, it was more of a marketing deal to get people to pre-order through Steam and to get the word out. And that surely worked out well.
On the BF2 demo thing... is it possible to download the demo and then with some tweaking still be able to use Mods? If so that may be why it's so popular still? Truly those of us hardcore BF2 players that were in it form the beginning don't play the main game much anymore. Or at least the players I know. Most play Mods such as UI or POE2 or WWII mods or similar stuff.

Yeah, I'm sure it's not a completely sound stat list, since I'm sure plenty of people are playing their games without going through Gamespy's service, and many who are are probably 13-year-olds on school computers still playing the original Counter-Strike, but it still must be depressing to be someone who spent the past three years on UT3, only to have it beaten in online players by "Halo Demo".

BF2!!!!!! I still play the main game and Special Forces and the fairly recent free map release. I also have 1 of the map packs.
I like the style which is in between Unreal and a boring simulation. Attacking or defending are equally viable. I like the variety of roles to play whether it's one of the classes or piloting one of the vehicles etc. There's quite a bit of tactics. And there's random events like plane debris falling out of the sky and killing your bud while missing you. Or the 1 in a million shots you get when you shoot a plane out of the sky with a tank shell or aim your grenade launcher halfway across the map at an enemy who just turned a flag white and you score!!!!
I'll play this until Bf3 comes along (hopefully next year.)
There is a BF3 in the pipeline?

But Between TF2 and Crysis why play anything else. COD4 is nothing but run and spam 24/7 nothing really fun to do there.

Technically you didn't know, you assumed. I don't think the game has "fizzed out" because not only the retail price is still the same there are still a few thousand players(low thousands).Personally TF2 has too few maps to really be the best MP game available in my opinion but don't get me wrong TF2 is good.

Indeed. The game hasn't fizzed out at all. The hyperbole in the title of the thread title is understandable considering Shiho is unfortunately experiencing game-breaking issues. There are are still many people who are enjoying the game which I feel is much deeper and more enjoyable than TF2.

Bot filter is broken in 1.2. Look down the thread...
ATI owners are broken in 1.2. I also saw some Nvidia guys in there, but I guess the majority are ATI. The main troubleshooting suggestion is rather stupid - "Disable triple buffering", because that setting is disabled by default !
And I am certainly not disabling Catalyst AI, which gives me an average 20-25% performance boost in games... including ET:QW before this patch.
Of course. Why wouldn't there be? It'll be 3 years next summer since BF2 and BF2 sold over a million copies. I would have to think we'll hear about BF3 soon.
